After being chased out of their beloved town of Boneville as a result of one of Phoney Bone's typical schemes, the Bone cousins find themselves lost in a barren desert, then are separated from one another inside a huge cloud of locusts. Guided only by a mysterious map he found, Fone Bone makes his way to a lush green valley where he meets some unusual characters and starts the search for his cousins.

In the woods Fone Bone meets a pretty girl named Thorn, with whom he is instantly smitten. She brings him back to her grandmother's farm, where Fone Bone is briefly reunited with his cousin Phoney – that is, until Phoney learns of the big cow race coming up in the nearby town of Barrelhaven and sneaks away to get started on his next big scheme.

That night, the farmhouse is attacked by a viscous horde of rat creatures. While Gran'ma Ben hold them off, Fone and Thorn make a run for it and are saved by the mysterious Red Dragon.

As Fone Bone, Gran'ma Ben, and Thorn prepare to go into Barrelhaven for the spring festival, many questions remain. Why did the rat creatures attack the farm? Why do Gran'ma Ben and the dragon seem to know each other, even though Gran'ma has always insisted dragons don't exist? And what is Phoney Bone up to THIS time?







The Bone cousins, who were separated in Out from Boneville, reunite in Barrelhaven to find the townsfolk are buzzing about who will win this year's cow race. Fone Bone and Thorn have their first tiff, leaving love-struck Fone desperate to win back her attention. Phoney schemes to make a fortune off the race by rigging the bets and having the Mystery Cow (Smiley in a cow suit) throw the race at the last minute.

As they go about their business, the Bones remain blissfully unaware that an army of rat creatures, their leader Kingdok, and a mysterious hooded figure have congregated in another part of the valley to plot the cousins' downfall. The game climaxes during the titular cow race, during which Gran'ma Ben and the Mystery Cow end up neck and neck, only to cross paths with an onslaught of angry rat creatures sent by Kingdok and The Hooded One to hunt the cousins down. They manage to escape, but this won't be the last time the Bones and The Hooded One cross paths...
