Sam & Max at retail! Right now!
Posted by emily August 15, 2007
I would have written this blog a week ago, but my repeated attempts to get pictures of Sam & Max Season One on a retail shelf were comically thwarted. But today the planets aligned...

I took these pictures at the Best Buy in San Rafael. Also, over the weekend Jake picked up a copy of the game at Fry's in Campbell. He forgot to take a picture, but he did get a thumbs-up from the Fry's employee who checked his bag on his way out!

Now we want to know where you've seen Sam & Max. There's an updated list of retailers carrying the game below, and these stores have locations all over North America. If you've seen Sam & Max in a store, please write in and let us know where it was. Better yet, take a picture! (Thumbs-up is optional but strongly encouraged.) Send it to us at sightings@telltalegames.com and we'll tack it up on this big map we're going to hang on the office wall for this very purpose.

Read on for where you can pick up Season One at retail...

Am I mistaken or is that a CD-ROM version?
What's up with that?

Yes, the retail version is on CD. You'll find more details about its contents on The Adventure Company's website.

Don't most stores frown apon taking pictures of their products? I guess if no one is around, who's to notice!

Actually the guys at Best Buy were really nice about it. I explained who I was and that I wanted to get a picture for the blog (this was before they put the games out, and no one could figure out where they were) and this guy spent like fifteen minutes trying to find them so I could get a picture.

Today when I went back I didn't see the same guy, but the games were on the shelf so it didn't matter. I did get a funny look from a customer while I had the camera out...

I've asked at a few local places down here (Australia), and it looks like we won't be seeing it on shelves till around September. Also, it appears that it will cost around $80AU. Maybe you should look into that, as it cost around $46AU online. (Converted at the time of purchase, obviously exchange rates fluctuate somewhat). Even after paying for the shipping for the DVD version, the difference is about the price of a new-release DVD movie. I don't know how much control you guys have over it, but it does seem pretty expensive. Enough to keep me from buying a second copy for the different box art, at least.

(But I want one...)

If I buy the retail CD, will I get a discount for ordering the bonus disk online? Or is that only for online orders of season 1?

whats up with it being cheaper than the one off the telltale site? and what about this:
"A full-sized printed poster featuring artwork by Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell"

Please tell me this isnt the one you're currently selling on your site?

If I'm right, the poster only comes with pre-orders. If not, I'm going to pick up a copy in a few weeks, when I'm in the States.

I thought I heard at some point that there was going to be a difference in the extras/etc between the Retail version and the Season 1 Bonus Disc. Can you explain what, if any, differences there are between owning the downloadable season & bonus DVD vs. buying the retail version?

Telltale's Season One DVD:

-Games and extras are all on one DVD
-Extras include machinima shorts, blooper reel, concept art montage video, all six episode trailers plus the E3 trailer, cutscene galleries with commentary from members of the development team, plus a few easter eggs (all viewable in your TV DVD player or on your computer), along with an MP3 soundtrack sampler and desktop wallpaper
-Comes in DVD case with cover art painted by Steve Purcell
-Manual is a 2-page quickstart guide that fits inside the DVD case
-Only available to customers who purchase the Season One download bundle from Telltale's store

The Adventure Company's retail CD:

-Games and extras are on two separate CDs
-Extras include all six episode trailers, an exclusive Behind the Scenes video, a full-sized poster of the highway surfing art Steve painted for the CGW cover last summer, bios of the main characters, a concept art gallery, MP3 soundtrack sampler, and desktop wallpaper
-Comes in a box with featuring game art and a nice "20 Years of Sam & Max" fold-out panel
-Manual is a CD case sized booklet (more in-depth than the quickstart guide in Telltale's version); CDs are in paper sleeves
-Available in retail stores across North America

The international versions JoWood is doing will have the same bonus features as The Adventure Company's North American release, but will be on one DVD instead of two CDs. JoWood's version will have fully localized German and French versions, as well as Italian subtitles.

Hope that helps. :)

Is anyone aware that EB Games exists here in Australia too? Hell, if I get a working camera, I could see if I could get Sam to pose playing a didgeridoo while Max rides like a lunatic inside a kangaroo pouch.

Too stereotypical?

Hmm...well, if I threw them on the beach people would assume Hawaii.

Maybe I could have Max beat up Russell Crowe mercilessly while Sam tries to get Hugo Weaving's autograph on his gun barrel...
(Beat up Crowe? Yes. Why? He's not Aussie - he's a damn Kiwi (no not the fruit, the PEOPLE, like Peter Jackson) - and secondly, he acts like a total arsehole (including the infamous phone throw) when he isn't barely acting on a movie screen instead. The only other thing I've seen him do is hoarsely garble into a microphone while his Neanderthal pals smash instruments around.)

While it's too bad that there were extras we didn't get with the free DVD (behind the scenes/poster), I'm just happy they gave us a free DVD of the eps and didn't charge anything extra.

This is the only company that I know of that has done such a thing with online purchasing. When you buy things from Valve through Steam, for instance, the price is the same as the retail and you still don't get physical media.

In any case, thanks again for the free DVD; I appreciate it.

Personally I perfer the cover and the DVD case of Telltale's version to the paper box and paper sleeves of the retail version.

Never been a fan of paper sleeves.
