Sam & Max Season One games have been updated
Posted by emily January 29, 2008

A few minutes ago, we did a huge update to all of our Season One downloads. It's been a long time coming, and if you were me you'd understand what a momentous day this is, but since you're not me, you'll just have to take my word for it. What this means to you is...

Downloading and unlocking your games is a lot easier!
If you're playing Season Two, you probably noticed that we're using a new unlock system. We like it so much (and we've received so much great feedback about it) that we've migrated Season One to this new system.* So, anyone who has bought Season One games can now download them directly from your My Telltale account – no special download links required! – and unlock them using either your Telltale log-in info or a serial number. (If you didn't have a My Telltale account before, one has been set up for you, and we sent you an email with your temporary password.)

All the Season One games now use the newest version of our game engine!
Best case scenario, you won't even notice this, but if you've ever had performance problems with the Season One episodes, you should check out the new ones to see if those problems have been resolved. (Note that Season One has NOT been updated to support widescreen resolutions. That's a bigger task than just updating the engine, and not something we're planning to do. Sorry, widescreen users.)

Season One is now fully Vista-compatible!
Until today, the downloadable version of Culture Shock didn't work on Vista, which was a real pain in the arse for Vista users trying to get into the series. Now that problem is gone, and balance has been restored to the universe. Woo.

If you haven't bought Season One yet, you can access the new versions in our online store, or just grab a demo from the Sam & Max section of the site.

Before you rush off to download these beauties, we do have a few caveats. Saves from the old versions won't work with the new ones, so if you're in the middle of an episode, you might want to hold off on updating until you finish it. Also, if you are playing from the DVD and it's working well for you, you don't need to bother upgrading unless you really want to. These updates are most significant for people playing the download versions.

If you have any problems redownloading your games or accessing your account, don't hesitate to email us. We live to serve.

Happy gaming!

*We're also going to be updating the Bone games and Telltale Texas Hold'em in the very near future, so that's something to look forward to.

Sounds to me like there's nothing as drastic as widescreen support in this update; is that the case?

Nope, the fundamental properties of the games are the same. Outside of activation, you probably won't notice much of a difference.

Like the blog says, we'll be updating Bone and Hold'Em very soon.

Thnaks! Will there also be a disc update (dvd or image)?

Nope. But the discs aren't affected by changes to our activation system either way, so all you're missing out on are engine updates that don't affect gameplay.

Okay, i was asking because of maybe Vista issues...

Nah, the only Vista issue was with the activation software on Culture Shock. That didn't affect the discs though, just the download.

So from now on my firewall don't even dig season one, just like it doesn't of season two without some tweaking.

That's fine, but makes me wonder wouldn't it have been possible just to release a patch fix to the games rather than downloading them again completely. That way, it would have been possible for the disc version players to update to the new engine also. I mean, even if the engine doesn't affect gameplay, it must do something, no, like reduce loading times or whatever?

Many of the bugs and compatibility issues were with the old software activation system, which isn't something you can just "patch out" of the game. We've now got both seasons of Sam & Max (and soon the rest of our back catalog) running on the same unified system, which should make it easier to offer tech support and provide any updates as needed. Before there was the system Season One used, which had a few variants even within the season, as well as the new system that Season Two used... too many different things going on! There's this little weird bump right now but in the long term, having everything unified will seriously make things easier on everyone.

Also some bugs that were fixed in the DVD never got fixed in the download versions, because the activation system we were using made updating the downloads more cumbersome. So now those fixes exist in the download versions (bringing them up to par with the DVD).

I've been waiting for this day all my life. Well not really but at least now I'll be able to install Sam & Max on other PCs without activation hassle. Thanks TT!

Actually, I'm about to put together a new computer and I'm using Vista (shut up, it has DirectX 10) so this will be more useful than I thought.

I don't suppose JoWood would be rolling this update in a patch for the retail edition, will they?

No. The stuff that was updated in our downloads was either already fixed in the retail versions, or has to do with the download versions' activation system which doesn't exist in the retail version at all.

I'm having trouble activating the updated 104 Abe Lincoln Must Die. Which is odd since it's the one which is supposed to be completely free now, even.

Every time I quit it, it keeps asking me to unlock it. Both the user name/password login method and serial number fail and say unlocking unsuccessful.

The rest unlocks fine, as did the two Season 2 eps.

You can ignore that, there's no need to activate it. We've actually since replaced the installer with a fixed one that doesn't ask you to unlock anymore.
