Sam & Max coming to XBLA with new and improved names

Sam & Max Save the World

Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space
Remember a few weeks ago when we hinted that Wallace & Gromit wouldn't be the only Telltale game coming to Xbox Live Arcade? Today we're letting the cat lagomorph out of the bag with the news that both seasons of Sam & Max will also be making their way to the platform. No dates to announce yet, but like Wallace & Gromit, we've passed the "someday" phase and entered the "soon!" phase. We've been getting requests to bring Sam & Max to Xbox Live since the dawn of time, so it's really gratifying that we're finally able to do so. What can I say, Telltale aims to please!

Along with today's announcement we have a bit of... unusual news. While both seasons will be appearing on XBLA, they won't be named "Season One" and "Season Two" like they have been in the past. For any new releases, Sam & Max Season One will now be named Sam & Max Save the World. And Season Two is now Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space.

Surely, having read that last paragraph, you're stammering "But--but--why would you do such a thing?!" I'll admit I get as annoyed as anyone when a game has a new name slapped on it... I feel like the publisher is trying to trick me into buying a second copy of a game I already bought. This is not why we're doing it! (Although if you already played one of our games and went on to buy it again through XBLA or retail out of love for Sam & Max, we definitely wouldn't complain...)

We've been finding that "Season One" and "Season Two," while an excellent way to message that our games are episodic, are kind of nondescript when you're browsing at the store. Because our games are all about the story, we wanted to come up with something that hinted a bit more about the quest you're about to embark on. And as a series continues, we really don't want someone to pass up the newest game because they think they'll be missing out on what happened in a previous season -- because as everyone who's played it knows (and as Adventure Gamers confirmed last week by honoring it with five awards), the newly-dubbed Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space is a great standalone game in its own right.

If you fear change, think of our website as your safe haven. Both Sam & Max seasons are still available here, with the same titles you're used to. But if you're a forward thinker, watch for Sam & Max Save the World on Xbox Live Arcade and Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space, coming soon to Live Arcade, as well as Wii and PC in snazzy retail versions.

Oh, and one more thing, the Official Xbox Magazine will have a first look at Sam & Max for XBLA in their next issue, so make sure to keep an eye out for that.

No offense but, the names are pretty terrible. It sounds like the joke names from every comic strip. And those are funny because they're so non-descript and crappy. And this is what you are trying to avoid so....

Actually, I don't think they sound ENOUGH like joke names. If they were more hilarious, they'd be fine. But instead, they're just kind of "there", mostly to differentiate while hiding the fact that they have any sort of sequential order.

Yeah, I agree the new names are a bit tame. But then "Sam & Max Hit the Road" (as a name) isn't all that funny or arresting either. The new names seem to be more or less in the HtR spirit -- nothing fancy, but they give you a vague idea of what happens in each season. It'll take some getting used to for me, but so long as the season numbers remain on the packaging (can't forget that these are episodic games, new names or not!), I don't have a problem with it.

Oh! And a quick question for the Sam & Max Wiki: How are these new titles officially, er, formatted? "Season One: Sam & Max Save the World" and "Season Two: Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space" would be my guesses based on the cover art, but I don't want to assume anything. ^^;

Awesome, more people that are going to play Sam & Max. And I fully understand the need for the name-change, although they could have gotten better names. The names for the individual episodes are always funny and smart, these names are a bit dissapointing.

But hey, as i said, it's great that Telltale is expanding like crazy these days.

How are they going to be priced? XBLA hasn't seen game in 1600 point ($20) territory since Penny Arcade Episode 1, but $15 almost seems like too little considering what it costs on everything else. Though $20 might be hard to sell to people on Xbox Live who aren't that aware of Sam & Max.

Just to let you know you've made a mistake with the URL of the bigger version of Beyond Time and Space. Link should be: http://files.telltalegames.com/blogs/beyondtimespace_big.jpg. You accidently added a h in there.

Oh, snap. Telltale just pulled a "George Lucas."

Actually, I sort of prefer the new titles. It's certainly more descriptive than simply Season One or Season Two. TV shows should do the same thing for reruns, for example:

Lost: Boars, Polar Bears, and Smoke Monsters
Lost: Push the Button!
Lost: Meet the Others
Lost: Widmore Sends a Boat
Lost: Beyond Time and Space

Great news for the Xbox 360-fans.
I understand the need for a renaming. I was just thinking that Sam & Max Season Two didn't work that well for the retail rebooting Atari is hopefully trying to do.

Nifty, if only I had enough disposable income to go around to repurchase them for XBLA. Looks like I'll have to wait until Wallace and Gromit before I get to try out the new interface. Unless you guys release a demo or two...

its official, telltale HATES me. The one thing i've been dreaming of is the one thing they're not doing. instead they're doing it for everyone else. i couldn't have console versions because it was a pc game, and i excepted that. i excepted the wii version because i figured "hey, its because of the wii's point and click interface. its not like it's a REAL system." now theres an xbox version....... i'm sad. REALLY sad. the only thing that could cheer me up is an announcement for season 3, but since we probably won't see that til after walace and gromit is done i guess i'll just sulk *SIIIIIIIIGH*

I would suggest Sam & Max Save the World (Season One) and Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space (Season Two).

Uh oh. The wii version of season 2 is still coming...right?

Of course! But it's going to be called Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space, not Sam & Max Season Two. ;)

And for all the people who have been asking about PS3 - we hear you! But these things take time and resources, and even if we are expanding like crazy, we are still just a bunch of human beings, and we do need to sleep sometimes. :)

A little bit of history, though, for those who might not be aware... originally our engine only worked for PC development. We got tons of requests for Sam & Max on the Wii and Xbox that are very similar to the PSN requests we're getting these days, but we just weren't set up for it at the time. Then in late 2007 we expanded our engine to also support Wii and Xbox 360 for CSI: Hard Evidence, which we were working on with Ubisoft. That's why you're seeing so many Wii and Xbox announcements from us these days. We are definitely interested in Playstation (as well as other platforms) but Rome wasn't built in a day.

I've never been wild about directly swapping a mouse for an analog stick, but I support Telltale in expanding however they can. You guys are doing a fantastic job of bringing back the adventure genre, and I'm amazed by how much of an audience you've uncovered. By stripping out the nonsense of the old classics (and not-so-classics), you've made a product that's enjoyable for a much larger audience. Adventure games were great for their story, humor, and clever puzzles, not the "try using X with Y, repeat" mechanism. Telltale's games manage to avoid that nonsense and get straight to the heart of what made the classics so great. I have the utmost respect for you guys, and I'm very much looking forward to Wallace and Gromit!

On a side note, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have some sort of hint at the order of the seasons. Season 2 makes a lot of references back to Season 1, so it'd be nice to have a simple numbering scheme in the titles, even if it's not overly prominent.

Oh, scratch that. I just noticed the "Season One" and "Season Two" above the titles on the box art. Well played, Telltale.

Hmm ... now that I think about it, the new Season Two title goes along well with the cheesy/B-movie vibe of the coverart. The font doesn't hurt that impression, either. ;) Still a little "meh" about "Sam & Max Save the World," but they're both growing on me.

[mindless speculation] And now I'm starting to wonder what Season Three's title will be ... [/mindless speculation]

Actually, I do kind of like the Season Two title, but Season One's should have made some reference to the season's theme. Then again, as has been pointed out, Hit the Road isn't exactly the most exciting informative title, either.

It wasn't for lack of trying. The more we tried to out-clever ourselves, the more terrible the titles became. Plus the goal was something that would be inviting to a new customer, not so in-jokey it was a turn-off, so we erred on the side of more general.

It does play into the season's theme, though. Think about it... what's the last thing Max says in the final episode? ;)

Your titles are backwards! Dammit, TT, can't you get anything right? ;)

I am going to be really angry if they don't release these on PSN as well. Too many companies are just jumping on the Microshit Crap-box bandwagon. Also I hope Season three comes out this year episodically on Steam, instead of just releasing one season package at the end.

Cool, expanding the audience is always a good thing. Are we going to See SBCG4AP on there as well in the future? Already own all 3 games so more just curiosity.

I kinda like "Beyond Time and Space", it's growing on me. Save the World makes sense but still is kinda "meh". Could be worse though :) .

And I doubt Telltale would even think of abandoning PC gaming. They could put out the games on Wii, PS3, and 360, and I"m still willing to bet the PC version would sell the most, maybe as much as 1-2 systems combined. I'm all for expansion to bigger audiences, but for me, adventure games are always on the PC.

Anyways, looking forward to Wallace and Grommet, keep up the amazing work Telltale! =D

I've already purchased both seasons on the PC and was intending to buy them on the Wii eventually. I've only finished one episode on the PC so far... I was intending to finish them up on the console. Telltale, a heart-felt thank you!

As a 36 year old gamer, I've seen some changes in the games industry. Some for the better, some for the worse.

Having spent hours spent playing Beneath a Steel Sky, Monkey Island, Indy, Simon the Sorcerer, Longest Journey, Feeble Files, Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle (the best adventure of all time!), The Dig and of course Sam and Max… indeed pretty much every main-stream adventure game made.

From the initial ‘Text only’ release of Monkey 1, through my first CD based ‘Talkie’ release (which was Simon 1 – voice by Mr A.J.Rimmer himself, Chris Barrie)… it all ended with ‘Stupid Invaders’, which was ok but not great and actually is the only adventure I started but did not finish. It still sit’s in my drawer, nagging me to play again…. But with the demise of the ‘adventure genre’ (stand up and hang your head in shame Lucas Arts, you broke my heart in the name of ‘generic Star Wars action game #39’…. such SCUMM ) my heart just wasn’t in it.

Of course, I’m more than aware that Sam and max were resurrected by you guys some time back, and have been more than tempted a few times to ‘dip-a-toe-in’. The problem is now that I have a family and home to look after, the PC is simply too anti-social of a platform for me to consider using. Indeed, it simply stands now as my gateway to the Internet… nothing more).

So I can not express more strongly my absolute delight that you are bringing Sam and Max to XBLA. At last not only am I going to be able to dust of those brain cells (perhaps even bumping into the ‘largest ball of twine in the world’), but I’m going to be able to introduce a whole new generation to the delights of the ‘Adventure’ genre… and our little furry friends!

One thing you can do for me though…. please. I have spent far too much time this past week, during work, scouring the net for a date for the XBLA release. Please, for the sake of my job (and families security) can you at least ‘hint’ at an approx date. Are we talking days, weeks months?

I’m serious… please! :o)
