Wallace & Gromit demo is here, series premieres March 24
Posted by Emily March 16, 2009

As we hinted on Friday, we have big news! This morning we released a demo for our latest and greatest series, Wallace & Gromit's Grand Adventures, and the series launch is just one week away, on March 24!*

Today, the demo is available exclusively at Yahoo and FilePlanet. Starting tomorrow, we'll also have it on our site, and it'll be up on mirror sites all over the web.

Unlike our previous demos, which usually take place during the first part of the game, this time we've pieced together a few scenes from the first episode so you can play as both Wallace and Gromit, and really get a feel for the type of gameplay you can expect in the series. If you're a fan of the films, you should see a lot of resemblances! You can play the demo with either the keyboard or a gamepad, and as an added bonus, in addition to English language, it's also subtitled in Italian, Spanish, German, and French.

Don't forget, through Monday, March 23 we're offering a really great deal for people who preorder the season. You can get the entire four episode series for $26 -- that's 25% off the regular $34.95 price. (If you're in the UK, at today's exchange rate, $26 comes out at about 18 pounds.)

*March 24 is the launch date for the PC version. The game's Xbox Live Arcade launch, pricing, etc. will be announced in the near future.

Can I join what must be a large group of people calling for the third season of Sam and Max? If these other two games, Sin Bad and W&G, are holding that back, please put them on hold!! I was promised a third season in early 2009, dammit!

If the demo is multilanguage, I think we can safely count on the entire series being so. In other words, yes, the episodes will have Spanish text (unless someone from the staff tells otherwise).

Thanks for making great games!

Greetings from Spain ^^/

Wow. Just tried the demo and I'm amazed. The game runs smoothly on my aging system with most if not all the bells and whistles. The graphics are cinematic quality - the best to ever grace my computer. The music , too.

My only niggle is that the new PC control system takes some getting used to, but it's much better than the system LucasArts used for Monkey Island 4 and Grim Fandango.

Pre-ordering now... :)

I was surprised at the controls, but very creative.

2 questions:
1. Is the first part with the chess game against Gromit and Wallace's machine the tutorial for the game?
2. Is there any way that there could be a toggle for a left handed feature, such as pressing Tab to use the inventory?

Great game, looks great, can't wait for the full version. I had some troubles during the beginning, but I changed the graphics quality and it was normal. I had some repeating dialogue at some points, but the same thing also happened with Sam & Max, so I ignored it.

For the two free games, is it possible to "give" those to a friend since I already own copies? You know, spread the love, get you some new addicts ...

@Guy in a Box - "R" also opens the inventory, which is fairly left-hand accessible. Maybe that will work for you?

@Lena_P just write in to support@telltalegames.com and someone will convert them to gifts for you.

Beautiful game: very animated and full of details. The characters look convincingly clayish. The puzzles in the demo is a bit, well, uninspired.

The control is unnecessarily awkward: why can't we use the mouse for all tasks, just as in other TT games?

The voice of Wallace is noticeably duller and less spontaneous than Peter Sallis, but I'll get used to that.

Forget one thing: music is, as the usual case of TT, superb: I especially like the way it takes a faux-military turn when you talk to Major Crumb (sp?)

About the music: I found it a bit too loud. And I could only adjust the overall sound level, not the induvidual levels (music, sfx, speech).

It runs smoothly on my Core 2 Duo T9100 laptop, 1680x1050 on quality level 9, and just okay on my netbook: Atom N270, 1024x600 - which I couldn't select, but 1024x768 is fine - on quality level 1.

I agree with barchetta that the music is on the loud side of the spectrum and that it has the tendancy to drown the speech. Adjusting the individual soundsettings may improve this.
Also it is noticable that Wallace's secondary voiceactor does the dialogs, but I have to admit that he does his job more than admirably.

Otherwise I can only say that Telltale manages to maintain thier high standards up until now and that look very much forward to the full episodes.

Liked the demo, but I have one question:
Will the episodes be subtitled like the demo, too? (i.e. german subtitles)
Comment by JAG
March 17, 2009, 11:39 am
Great, except that the game runs at 100% CPU on my computer, which I think is the reason that the mouse was very unresponsive. Sometimes I had to click more than 10 times before anything happened. Did anyone else experience the same problem? Does it run at 100% CPU on all computers or is it just mine that is too old and slow?
Comment by jerha202

@JAG you can turn the subtitles off in the games settings. You can choose which language you want to install when running the installer (you can install the English, French, Italian, German or Spanish version).

"You can choose which language you want to install when running the installer (you can install the English, French, Italian, German or Spanish version)."

May I ask why the language selection isn't available inside the game instead, like using seperate language subtitle files inside a special ttarch or something like that?
Not that I mind much; I usually have subs off unless I can't hear what they're saying very well.

Played the demo for two minutes,

HATED IT! Didn't even bother getting passed the first scene.

Why did Telltale pick up this overrated franchise? British characters are not funny. I won't be buying this one.

Yes! It's finally here, and the demo was fabulous - if beit very much on the easy side.

Only problems, like pointed out before are, why change the mouse control to the akward keyboard gestures?
The music was mixed too loud in comparison to the other FSX.

Other than that, it will work out fine I'm sure. Running smoothly on my few year-old machine (the lip synch would be off many times, but I'm not sure there is meant to be precise mouth movement synching anyway

To me this is the biggest thing since Sam & Max Season Two. I can't believe that it's finally happening.

Thanks TT. You've earned your 26 bucks.

It's a shame that the lighting is quite poor compared to previous telltale games. It does not stand up well against the moody, colourful cinematography of the shorts and feature.

I had hoped your work on the CSI games would help (who knew the telltale tool had shadows); but it just looks like you took a single white light and flooded the entire scene with it.

"British characters are not funny."

Boy are you wrong on that one. Must be your sense of humor that doesn't allow much of it. :)

I understand perfectly why they picked this series up, it's quality work and quality humor. I don't think it's overrated either, most people like the things they like because they actually like them.

Neat!
Since I don't have access to my main PC right now, I've installed the demo on my old machine (Athlon XP 2600+, Radeon 9600, 2GB RAM, WinXP, updated DirectX, Catalyst 9.2). Unfortunately, the mouse cursor has an extreme lag and the program crashes completely the moment I attempt to set the graphics quality below 4. The game looks nice though, gonna try it again on my faster computer.

Also love the built-in multi-language support, but is there a way to switch languages after the install? I installed the game in German, so I have German subtitles and graphics, but I'd prefer plain English. Is this possible without reinstall?

At the same time the episode comes to XBLA, which is tbd at this point. It'll still be in the spring. :)

Nope, the localized graphics and localized subtitles go together. Either it's all in German or none of it is.

I couldn't get it to run in 1024x600 resolution on my netbook (mini laptop).

It does run in 1024x768 and if I scroll down a bit, it's just fine.

But although it shows 800x600, 1024x600 and 1024x768, clicking on it or using the cursor keys, highlighting it in backets and pressing the spacebar doesn't do anything. (mouse pointer or cursor keys/spacebar do work in selecting full screen or quality so it's not that the controls don't work).

We hope so, but it's out of our hands at the moment. If it doesn't get resolved until after the 23rd, just contact support@telltalegames.com after placing your order and explain that you tried to pay with PayPal during the preorder, and we'll match the price and get you the free games.

Just played it through and laughed aloud many times. Preordered too :)

Good points,
-Characters very true to the originals, especially gromit - perfect expressions!
-great environments, best I've seen recently

Bad points
-please let us change the music sound level independently, its far too loud
-real shame Peter Sallis couldn't have been used as the voice actor for Wallace
