Monkey Island Gameplay Video!
Posted by David E June 30, 2009

Hey there. We made a new gameplay video! It's a peek at the first few moments of Tales of Monkey Island Chapter One, "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal". You might notice that it includes an sample of some of the inventory-item-combining action you'll face while playing. Enjoy!

Oh, and one more thing: there's still time left to pre-order Monkey Island!

The music sounds really pretty atm. I hope there's more jazzy jungle music and maybe a rearranged intro music (favourite intro is the one of MI2)

The only thing I would criticize is the voice of LeChuck (played only the German versions before), because I miss some deepness and volume. Just look at his body and his beard. He should sound like an evil Santa.

At last! And now Guybrush may never ever leave the stage again! It has been too long since the last MI, but on the other hand some big artists also make a comeback after many years. Anyway, I am very happy with his return!

Hmm on second viewing, I like this more :) And LeChucks voice will grow on me. My only suggestion, maybe make his voice a bit deeper, and make LeChuck a bit more menacing. Think Mi2 in the tunnels at the end.... that kept me on edge...though that was back in 1994 ;-)

Looks absolutely great. I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the trailer because the humor seemed kind of forced to me but in this this video the humor was much more to my liking so I have hope again that this turns out to be a really great game.

Interesting camera angles too. Kind of makes you feel to be really playing Guybrush's part and not only controlling his actions. And the overall presentation is just awesome, not only the game graphics and lightning but the inventory and everything else too. Either you guys spent a lot of time to get this right or you learned a lot from past games and developed a certain feel for this. Probably both :) I played the Wallace and Gromit demo two days ago and even though I never was a fan of Wallace and Gromit I found myself thinking about buying the episodes nevertheless because everything was just so amazingly well put together. The game world felt really dynamic, something you usually don't see in an adventure game. Can't wait to see future Telltale Games because at the moment, they just get better and better.

Hm. To make it very clear in the beginning - I'm a huge fan of Monkey Island.
I grew up with the games and the series is one of my a time favorites.

(I guess you can hear the major 'but' that's coming ...)

But ... to be very honest this doesn't feel like Monkey Island to me.
I kinda dislike the graphical approach because in my eyes it looks cheap and misses
the details, the heart and the passion of the previous games.
Games such as "The Book of Unwritten Tales" proof that you can combine 3D graphics
with a lot of love and detail in an adventure game.

In addition to that writing (as far as I can tell from the trailer) has a lot lower quality
than the previous games as well. The lines are pretty flat and humor doesn't reach the
wackyness of the MI 1-4.

I personally am looking much more forward to the Monkey Island 1 Special Edition
But that's just my opinion ...

Cheers,
S

It isn't the graphics that make this vid a MI miss--it's the conspicuious lack of humor. In any given 2 minutes of gameplay, I should have heard at least one joke or satirical reference. But, back to the graphics, what happened to "the screenshots are not the final stage" talk? The vid clearly demonstrates that the screenshot quality of 30 days ago is still present--no visible improvement.

As for my $35 ... I think I've been had.

so far not so good.

telltale is being a little pretentious, going off on a well established series without giving it the production value it deserves. ridiculous and probably the biggest sin ever to make in a creative setting.

the final product had better be at least average.

Why have this company destroyed this saga?..we...the real followers of the serie, stopped to support it after MK3, now they are repeating the error with another poligonal game...

If you like this, play Monkey Island 3.

Well sorry for my last post to the developers, but Im not happy with the visual result. I understand games have to evolve, but if you make a game like this in 3d, you have to make something new....

In my opinnion, Guybrush looks like in drugs, he is not the real Guybrush; in general the look of the game lack of that something special...the models...mmm, i could do them myself in 3dstudio and im not a pro.

As follower Im not happy with the result, so I will try before I buy...as many others; And be sure that if we think the game is a real sucessor to the saga we will buy it, but not before. I really wish I could feel again the same feeling i had once, Monkey Island was magic

I was never really into Monkey Island, but this is looking good. How will it control on the wii though, point and click or a combo of the wiimote for point and click and the nunchuck for movement?

Combining items, huh. Haven't done that in a while, at least it looks like you only have to combine two at a time. I when adventure games have you combining like four or more at a time, I've seen it before, blargh.

Who are you and what have you done with LeChuck?

It's nice to hear Dominic Armato returning as Guybrush (even if a couple of lines did sound a little weak: "What was that?"), and is that the lady who voiced Elaine in COMI?

But whoever is doing LeChuck needs to go and play COMI and EFMI. This guy's voice sounds too... false. It sounds like someone who's trying to do a pirate accent. When Earl Boen did a pirate accent he didn't even sound like he was trying - just had the right amount of evil inflection. And as for the other trailer, since when did LeChuck laugh "Har... har.... har"?

Watch

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4duwwHAUf_w

and then tell me that his new laugh works.

The graphics are good, but LeChuck looks more comical than evil. Those giant lips and green cheese skin just don't work.

Elaine doesn't look right either. Not sure but I get the sneakiest suspicion that I've seen her face before (and not in the previous MIs) and that it's a little too tomboyish.

Guybrush does look good, if a little too rugged. Closer to MI2 than the other 3 - MI2's Guybrush always stood out a little odd and not quite right to me.

Still am looking forward to it. Hopefully they can match the excellent humor from the previous games.

Is it Tuesday yet?

Grapic looks absolutely poor (the rope that fetters Elaine) My god... And the plot is a bit dump as well. Guybrush arrives with his own ship. He sails alone! It seems to a low Budget production. Too sad. I think even Monkey 4 looked betterthan this. Sorry telltale. Wallace & Gromit Adventures are easy but cool games but Sam&Max and now Monkey Island... you gave them the deathblow.

I love Guybrush's and LeChuck's facial animation, but I think Elaine could use a bit more work. Her eyes are very well-animated, but she doesn't look like she's raising her voice when she's shouting. Perhaps a little more exaggeration on the mouth?

But other than that, this looks awesome, and I can't wait for the release!

I'm so dissapointed...

I'm a big fan of the monkey island series and ı've been waiting for a new game of series a long time... And ı should say that it's not looking good... For my opinion though... Wasting such a legend like this with poor quality 3D graphics...

That's for sure it would be great if you had mixed the 3D and hand drawing graphics like ''runaway''

and the lines...

So simple and it didn't even make me laugh out loud like the first game or the third one which was the best ı think...

It's still a good idea to remake the game but ı want you to remember it's not ''sam&max'' don't try to do it same...

I can't even say how sad ı am...

I will buy the game and play it but ı wish it wasn't like that...
And ı prefer one big cute, more lucas arts looking, and a game with sense of humor...

Guybrush look to me so annoying and elain is even more annoying!!??
I want my cute wanna be pirate guybrush back!! He was hilarious...
It's not like him...ofcourse he isn't look like him too...
He was so cute at the third game...
Also Le Chuck is looking so silly... I was so dissapointed when ı saw the fourth game but it's even worse...

Pleeeeaaaassssseeeeeeeeee make i better and match with the great humor with the previous games...

But ı'm sooooo excited about the special edition of the first game!!
I'm so happy about it and ı'm sure ıt's going to be outstanding!! I don't know how ı'm gonna wait!
It doesn't need great graphics to be great and hilarious...

Last...

Hearing Dominic Armato again was the best thing in the video... He is the best :)
I can't even think someone else as guybrush...

Nobody gave Monkey Island the "deathblow". I think some of you should go back and LOOK at MI4 and then compare it to this. The game doesn't suck just because it's 3D, but I have choice words I can't say here for people who won't accept how much better this is than EMI.

Please give up on the annoying attempts at 3D graphics. They were terrible in the fourth game and they're still looking terrible. Am I the only one who'd prefer updated graphics based on the third game (which was simply awesome)?

And what's with the graphics in the clip? The dubbing is off and it looks like it was based on a version of the Grim Fandango engine? That's ten years old now guys. Pull your socks up please!

The atmosphere feels like Curse of Monkey Island with a hint of MI 1 & 2, which is a great thing. While not laugh out loud funny, the humor here was silly and charming, and very much in the Monkey Island spirit IMO. I can understand having some complaints, but anyone who is displeased enough to want a refund based on this short clip is as soulless as LeChuck himself. ;)
