Launch of the Screaming Narwhal coming to WiiWare July 27!
Posted by David E July 24, 2009

Wii owners, the wait is (almost) over! "Launch of the Screaming Narwhal", the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island, now has a WiiWare release date. The game will make its console debut in North America this coming Monday, the 27th of July. For our friends in Europe, fear not! We'll have release date information for you guys very soon.

WiiWare!

Not sure how to buy a game on WiiWare? Check out this guide to buying through the Wii Console. As with the episodes of Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, Guybrush's first outing on the Wii will cost 1000 points.

Sorry, but 10 bucks for a single episode is kind of crap, no?

On Steam we get the five episodes for $35, why should we buy on WiiWare for $10 each? And on PC, you always get higher resolutions as well.

I love the series, but this is something i wouldn't expect from TellTale. Anyway, guess I was wrong.

I was kinda hoping for a lower price point than Strong Bad, it always seemed a little on the high side to me. But I guess it does make sense to leave the price of a WiiWare Telltale episode the same. I've got the PC version, but I may pick up an episode or two on WiiWare just to see how the game works on Wii. I suspect I'll like the control better, it seems designed for 'mote and 'chuck controls.

The individual Episodes on Telltale's Site were always $8.99, so it's really only $1 more. But the Wii Store does not allow for Package Deals or for the same thing to be listed twice. Hence why the Wii Rock Band Store doesn't have the slightly cheaper track pack bundles like the PS3 and 360 RB stores have. Thus Telltale has no choice but charge their individual episode price for their WiiWare titles.

Don't forget that the $8.99/episode from the Telltale store individual games goes (more or less) straight to Telltale. Wiiware is basically a reseller, so they have a markup on their product, just like any other retail channel.

And considering what utter rubbish is on Wiiware for 1000points, I will happily be buying the Wiiware versions for the family to play.

I have to wait longer? Damn American's making Europe wait longer for video games that were long awaited in the first place.

i would actually have preferred to get the episodes on the wii, but i wasn't going to pay $10 a piece when i could get the whole season for $35 ($7 an episode) plus extras.

i can see maybe 750 points an episode, that way there's still an incentive to buy the whole season, but not 1000.

Finally an announcement.

But come one guys, 1000 points. In Europe that's not $10 it's €10! (yes that's how lame Nintendo is).
For the US people: 1000 points in Europe costs $14.22! So that's $71.10 for all episodes!
We're being ripped of here!

I've been waiting for long for this game but now i seriously don't know if i'll buy it. Damn, $35 dollars to buy it here, and $71.10 to buy it on Wii in Europe?????

With SPCG4AP, Nintendo was downright cruel with the European release dates. However, recently, we've been getting WiiWare games every week and VC games every other week (and every week during the recent Hanabi Festival), while back when SPCG4AP was release, WiiWare and VC games were released on alternating weeks. If Nintendo screws Telltale over in Europe again, they literally have no exuse this time.

So...how does a 200mb game fit into Nintendo's 40mb WiiWare file size limit? Telltale, what are we losing? Is it compressed to high heaven?

@freedumb , I agree completely but I don't think there's anything they can do. It's completely Nintendo. Telltale are probably getting less per episode from Wiiware sales than they do PC sales. Nintendo are gits like that.

Just be patient, a lot of work goes into regionalising these games for the European market: they have to lower the frame rates, stick black borders on the screens, print off those higher price tags. It all takes time

With this incredibly delayed release, the higher price point, the comparatively worse graphics and the complete absence of a 5-in-one deal, the only people who should even consider getting the WiiWare version are the ones who own a Wii but no PC. The PC version is just that much more superior in each and every aspect.

I've downloaded the game, and it's got that genuine Monkey Island feel!

I am disappointed by the poor audio quality, though. The voices are very compressed and staticky, and it's a constant irritant. I hope Telltale can find a way to fix this by the time the next installment rolls out!

I completely agree about the audio quality... I noticed it right away, and it's VERY irritating. The music itself is fine, but the dialogue is horrible, and at times it's so muffled that I have to turn up the volume and strain to even understand what they're saying.

I was already not pleased with the higher price on the Wii, and even though I've already plunked down $10 for the first episode, I'm thinking I might cut my losses and just buy the whole thing for PC. I'll still come out $5 ahead of paying for all 5 episodes on the Wii, and will have better audio and video quality to boot.

I don't know whether TellTale or Nintendo are responsible for the poor audio quality, but honestly... that's too big a flaw in a game that costs $50 in total.

Considering this game's near a fifth of the size of the PC version (due to Nintendo's 40 MB file limit) it's one hell of a technical achievement i'd say

@Persona non grata, true - if the above is correct (?) - haven't check Wiiware for a release in DK recently, think I'll wait till tomorrow (friday)
Hopefully the Wii control system makes up for those flaws :)
Been waiting for this games to be released for too long...
BTW - COMI is the best MI game in my opinion - loved the cartoonish graphics ;)

I totally agree about the sound quality--this is something I voiced complaints about with SBCG4AP on WiiWare as well. For something so dialogue focused, it is truly unacceptable. Does this mean fewer/shorter music loops? Having smaller separate loops of different tracks so that they can be combined in different ways on-the-fly? I assume they have done everything they can codec-wise: using AAC, VBR, using 32khz for some assets so 80kbit/sec VBR can be used, mono for some assets, joint stereo so there's more bits for directional sounds, etc.

I understand the price point situation, but for the dramatically lower visual and aural quality, it needs to be a dollar cheaper.

Until something improves, we'll stick with our other disc-based adventure games on the Wii. We so enjoyed SBCG4AP and were able to get over the audio issues and enjoy it, but ToMI just isn't cutting it for the pricepoint. I hope they release on PSN soon which doesn't have these size limits and has built-in decoding for 24-bit lossless audio.

Sorry, TellTale :(

Hey telltale,
I just finished the Wii version TOMI ep1, and I have 4 comments:

1.Thank you, seriously Thank you Not only did you do this series justice but you may have made the best Monkey Island game to date. and this is only the first episode.

2.The Controls were great for Wii, no complaints. Everything felt natural.

3. I thought the wait for wii release was unbearable.... now I have to wait for episode 2 gah...

4. The Adventure game is officially back, Telltale it's your fault....Now don't stop... EVER.

Wait... the european WiiWare version only in English? Sorry but that's a no-buy for me. Every Monkey Island has been translated into several languages here in Europe. It's a graphic adventure for god's sake!! I hope in the end Lucas will release this game in DVD format and in multi-language, that's the only way I'd buy this :(

ikari: If you managed to write that entire comment in English, surely you can manage to play Monkey Island in English. Please DO NOT encourage software companies to make translated versions, that will just delay the release of any version by months.

And I second everybody on the price. 1000 freaking WiiPoints in Europe. Might as well not have bothered making a PAL conversion at all. Good thing is it made me stop hesitating and buy the PC version.
