SnM + Steam = BFF
Posted by Nikki H April 15, 2010

A longstanding hobby of Telltalers is playing Team Fortress 2 after work, because there's nothing quite like shooting your coworker in the face to bring up the office morale.

Yare, our dashing team captain, was proud of what he had wrought in us. The TTG TF2 server was burgeoning, bullets were flying about and people were eagerly discussing the benefits to having a Direct Hit instead of a normal rocket launcher.
Perhaps, it was time to bring it to the next level.

The SEALSThe Best Around

We formed what became known as the Telltale Seals, a dedicated group of TF2 murder machines bent on showing the interwebs that adventure gaming companies can kill. After participating against amalgamated teams of game studios in a tournament called Studio Rumble, we learned our lesson quickly.

The "next level" was far beyond our skill curve.

It turns out we're better at making games than targeting faces. After flirting with disaster, we decided to be just friends, but we were charming in our own right. The Telltale Seals forged valuable friendships that lasted through the 8-hour workdays and beyond, and with every message of "don't quit your day job," we were bolstered by our skill in game creation. In paticular, a friendship was kindled with Valve.

Whole Lagomorph Is Baby

You have heard that through the next week, buying The Devil's Playhouse through Steam gets exclusive weapons and a hat, correct? But you have not heard the full story. How did Valve get these items in which to disperse? We mean no accusation of treachery, but to get a fuller sense of the picture, we will let you in on our latest conversations with Valve.

Dearest Valve,

We apologize for our presents last week, we did not know that the flowers would cause Robin such an allergic attack, and we hope everyone has recovered from the illness brought on by our love poem. We mean only the best.
As a consolation, could you please accept these gifts on our behalf? We heard you liked Sam and Max (or maybe we heard you liked The Penal Zone, either way) and wanted to give you a token of peace between us. Guns should do the trick, and a severed head. It might be a little sappy, but we think it's appropriate.

Think of us dearly while plugging lead into enemy faces, and we shall do the same.

All our love, Telltale Games

Though we have not yet received a reply, we presume that they loved our items so much that they're giving them away to Steam users! Pre-order customers and anyone who buys The Devil's Playhouse throughout this week receives Max's Pistol, Sam's Revolver and Max's Severed Head to use within Team Fortress 2. They must have been really impressed! Right guys? ...Right?

Let me tell you, it's quite an honor to get Valve involved with The Devil's Playhouse, almost as fun as asking them to check out The Penal Zone. You can too, you know. To get all the awesome goodies, rush over to the Steam Store and wear a lagomorph as a hat. It's an experience unlike any other.

This is quite a pleasant surprise and interesting way to get people to buy your stuff with trinkets made of pixels and awesome. However, I already pre-purchased the game directly from this site, and I was wondering if I link my current copy of the first episode through Steam, would I be able to get these nice things, or am I out of luck?

To the best of my knowledge, you're out of luck. Sorry, guy.

Yeah, we are separate stores and companies entirely. Until we can convince them to marry us, we can't offer the hats to those who don't order via Steam.

Thanks!

I've now been screwed TWICE because I preordered through Telltale's Store.

Yep, but you'll get the DVD in the slip case won't you ? A beautiful thing that you can hold in your hands that the steam buyers won't have.

I wonder what sort of ceremony there'd be if Telltale did marry Steam.

@AlgegriaUnknown: I don't care.

I have literally hundreds of games on my Steam account. Needless to say, I don't put a lot of stock in boxed copies of games.

Sure, I also got a coupon code for a free episode... but the only ones left that I don't already own are for games I don't want.

Oh, and given that my icon is the TF2 Spy, it's a sure bet that I play Team Fortress 2.

That is to say, we're looking into it.

I bought from Telltale as well, even though I still would have bought from telltale even knowing about this(love the DVDs :D) It would be nice to have the Telltale items in my TF2 though.

Any chance of us also getting it the other way around, so us Steam people still get a disk, or at least it put on our Telltale accounts so we can play it offline easier?

We have a pretty unique way of divvying out the DVDs at the end of the season, and since Steam is an entirely different company, it'd be really hard to get the discs to Steam customers. The hat situation is being looked at, but the disc one is a whole other ballgame, unfortunately.

Dammit, why does Telltale keep doing this? I love TF2! I'll see if Steam will do me a favor if I give them a couple bucks. Woo! Money! It has a certain way of making things work for you.

Great. Now I'm getting items dangled in front of me that I really want, but will have to re-buy the game again if I ever want them.

I mean, really, this is cool on your guys behalf, but I hope this whole mess gets straightened out. I mean, a warning would have been nice.

Just when I was close to convincing somebody to buy directly from you guys instead of from Steam, you pull a stunt like this. Nice :p

And thanks for looking into getting us Max's severed head too, we really appreciate it :)

Somewhat off topic, but since you guys have extended out and put The Devil's Playhouse on PSN this season, I think it'd be awesome if you could potentially discuss things with Sony/Media Molecule and try to get Sam & Max outfits done for LittleBigPlanet. That'd be something I'd really love to buy.

Oh, and just so you know, the TF2/Sam & Max cross over pushed me into buying this season. Which is fine and all, had to fill out my Telltale collection, even if it is spread across Steam and Telltale itself.

Hi, I'm a TF2 gamer and this caught me off guard... in a good way. I was thinking of buying Sam & Max and you pulled out this stunt, what a strange and pleasant coincidence/surprise! :-D I'm European, and my only grudge is the Steam price: 34,99$ is 25,99€ not 32,99€. I don't and won't condone this kind of behaviour it really puts me off, that's why I decided to buy it from here only if you do give us the items and if I can pay in dollars. Hoping for an official response by you guys as soon as possible, I don't want to miss the special offer.

Bye and keep up the good work :-)

Don't consider it punishment, nor an advertising ploy. We thought, "Hey wouldn't this be AWESOME?" and Valve went "Yeah!" and we did it. We're working on the possibility of getting hats for people who ordered through us at this store.
Also Steam pricing has nothing to do with us, so comments as to the difference in Euro/Dollars should be directed to them.

"Also Steam pricing has nothing to do with us, so comments as to the difference in Euro/Dollars should be directed to them."

Guess what Steam says? "Game pricing has nothing to do with us, so comments as to the difference in Euro/Dollars should be directed to game publishers".

I wonder who is lying and who is telling the truth.

Can't you tell Steam "ok, we agree for you to sell our game at a price that WE want"?

Maybe you are not aware of this fact but steam is actually RIPPING OFF European customers by forcing unreasonably high prices. See here: http://www.steamprices.com/us/search?Sam+Max

almost every Sam and Max episode is 35% more expensive in Europe, is that fair? You claim you have no control overt the prices and, surprise, surprise, Steam is claiming the exact same thing. Someone is obviously lying.
Luckily prices in your Telltale Store are fair for everyone and that is where I am buying your games.

Yeah, every time the inconvenient question "Who sets the price" is asked, the response is a very telling silence...

April 19, 2010, 12:53 am
Interesting. As far as I've heard, they set the prices- we of course negotiate as they choose to be competitive with their pricing, there's no reason why Telltale OR Steam would desire to rip people off. However we are not in charge of their promotions, sales, and so forth, so I at least presume it is still the case for initial pricing.
