An Announcement Regarding Jurassic Park
Posted by Alan April 26, 2011

We at Telltale Games constantly strive to give folks the best storytelling in the business coupled with the quality episodic content and gameplay you've come to expect from us. Jurassic Park: The Game, our upcoming title based on the groundbreaking film of the same name, is looking to go a step further with new game mechanics and a sense of terror that is paramount to the Jurassic Park franchise. We see a ton of potential in the game's exciting mechanics and style and feel we can take what we already have in place to an even more thrilling level, so we've decided to continue work on the game and launch the PC/Mac version of Jurassic Park: The Game to coincide with the our multiplatform release in fall 2011.

We know you've been waiting a long time for your trip back to Isla Nublar (heck, so have I) so your continued patience while we add more exciting bits to Jurassic Park: The Game for its fall release is greatly appreciated. Launching the game at a later date ensures Jurassic Park and video game fans alike will get the coolest and most fun experience possible.

Telltale Games CEO Dan Connors explains our decision:

You're probably wondering what happens now, so here are some basic details:

  • We've already contacted individuals that have pledged their support and excitement for the Jurassic Park project by pre-ordering the game and are issuing those affected a 100 percent refund. In addition, Jurassic Park: The Game pre-orderers will receive a copy of any single game from the Telltale library on us. Note: The free game voucher we'll be offering will be valid for Jurassic Park: The Game when it becomes available again so hold on to your voucher if that's the game you'd like to claim.
  • You'll get some more looks at Jurassic Park: The Game as we head into E3 and beyond. We'll have more details on our release plans as we near the game's fall 2011 launch.

Thank you again for your continued patience as we work hard to bring you our brand of high-quality storytelling and gameplay and look forward to finally letting folks get their hands on what we've been working on for so long.

So basically I'm getting it for free now?

Wow, you guys really didn't have to go that far!
I mean, sure, it sucks that it got delayed... but I still want it, so you didn't have to go through all the trouble to cancel my preorder!

This act of kindness is appreciated though, makes me respect you guys even more.

I don't think it works like that. I think you'll get the first episode of Jurassic Park for free, if you keep the code until the fall, I don't think you'll be able to get the whole series for free.

You will be able to use the voucher we offer on the full season of Jurassic Park when we make it available for purchase again on our store. The coupon will not expire.

One game means one episode in Telltale's language.

I think this is the best decision Telltale has made. I was getting worried that with the tight schedule and huge number of games being worked on, that quality was going to take a real nose dive. If that happened, even though they would be praised for consistent release dates, the decrease in quality will cause a lot of gamers to lose faith and stop buying Telltale games. This assurance of quality in their games and that customers come first, is really noteworthy.

More game companies should follow Telltale's example here. Hopefully, from a long-term financial standpoint, Telltale will be rewarded by this decision.

@Macco We're offering a free full season of any of our games to all those that pre-ordered. The voucher does not expire so you'll be able to use it on a future Telltale release if you so desire.

Good choice Telltale. This will be well respected by your fans. It's the right thing to take some extra time to deliver a really excellent, solid, polished product - like S&M Season 3, ToMI, Puzzleagent Strongbad - than to rush and produce stuff like BTTF and Poker Night. Your success as a company depends on your fans and their faith that a Telltale game will always, without exception, be of the very highest quality in every way. We know you can make exceptional games, and we all support you taking extra time to do things right.

What does multi platform release mean? So far you've only confirmed PC and Mac... Does this mean PS3 and XBOX 360 too or do you still plan on ignoring the 360 for the forseeable future.

I do hope you give us Xbox 360 gamers some love. We've had to miss out on Monkey Island, Puzzle Agent, Same & Max Season 3, Back to the Future AND Strong Bad. Please release some of these for XBLA soon, we need more Telltale games!

Will we be getting Jurassic Park?

Really good choice on your part Telltale. No inconvience.

This is quite awesome, though I would gladly still pay for the game. Perhaps with this in mind, I will get it on one of the other platforms as well or buy a copy for a friend.

Well played, Telltale :) Can you imagine if someone like Valve did this when their games were delayed? Ha! - much love to Valve, but they'd be broke if they did :D

I'm a bit bummed out about it being delayed, and suspect it has much to do with the amount of licenses Telltale has taken on.

Having said that, way to shower us with gifts!

Too bad about the delay, delays always suck, but a refund and a free voucher for a full free season of any of Telltale's games AND Jurassic Park free!? Wow, Telltale, much, much, MUCH respect for you. You guys are a real class act and you actually demonstrate that you care about your fans unlike other gaming companies that just blogging a hollow statement about how much they care that looks like it was copied and pasted from some other gaming company's website. I hope Telltale exists forever, love you guys!

I'm really glad you guys did this instead of taking the easy way out and releasing it quickly for cash. Your decision here will undoubtedly ensure the quality of all your future games. In addition, your efforts to make it up to the fanbase are commendable.

That really is a huge move for any developer to show their customers they truly do appreciate the support! I started drifting from the belief that this type of movement was truly factual and the mighty dollar was in essence the only driving force with the "Back To The Future" episodic pre-order. I suppose if there was an exact date of release for your products, there would be more comfort and confidence in purchasing a pre-orders. With all the bugs and lowered visibility in the future release dates of BTTF episodes, I am basically wary of pre-purchasing anything with TTG in the future. I hope there is improvement overall, not just for the shiny new toys being developed.

i'm quite disappointed. Now since we have to wait till the fall, and each episode comes out every month.. that just takes too long... i dunno.. I doubt my interest for tis game will still be as bright as now.. bummer.. well.. i guess.. we'll see it in the fall.

I think the delay is a good thing. I love Telltale (wouldn't be here if I didn't), but they do have some flaws, and one of them is often rushing games to provide a speedy release. I'm kind of skeptical of Jurassic Park as it is, so it's good to hear you're taking your time with it. There's no shame in that.

I also applaud you for the refund and free voucher. If any other developer delays their game they just go "Tough shit, it's delayed" with no attempt at compensation. So good job on that. I just regret that I floundered on whether I should pre-order JP or not. :P

I forgive you, Telltale. But, only if you document on video what transpires over the next few months and put up a "making of" documentary on Youtube later, explaining why you decided to make the changes, what those changes are, etc.

On a related note, I REALLY hope that the new game mechanics that you're talking about that you've decided to explore, are something akin to the one that's been used in games like Amnesia: The Dark or Penumbra. At least I think that's the type of game mechanics that the old Jurassic Park (Trespasser) aspired to achieve but ultimately failed. It would be absolutely AWESOME if you could pull off a realistic physics-based 1st-person horror survival experience a la Amenesia, but with dinosaurs!!!

Well... just want to say that I really respect Telltale. I think that they are making the right move. Everyone was concerned about the quality with all those release dates so near and the licenses they were getting. Now I´m wondering what am I going to do with that voucher! great deal and a big surprise for those who pre-ordered.

I hope that with the extra time we will get the best Jurassic Park game ever! heck! I think we will!

First, I must say that the compensation is certainly more than fair. However, I must admit that I'm a little disappointed - I was really waiting for the game to come out, and a postponement of 5-6 months is not a minor one. Since it is a considerable delay, I wish you'd announce it earlier; about 3 days before the game should have came out is really the last minute, when people's expectations are all up.

Cool. That's what I always say, "Hey, if you need a few more months to make it the best game possible, then by all means, take a few more months to release it."

Now, I didn't preorder JP yet, (money is a little tight right now), but at least I have more time to save up for it now. But, I kinda wish I did, not only would I have gotten a refund, but also a free game cupon (even for JP). Awesome!

Well, best of luck on the spit-and-polished Jurasic Park game.

Just when I start worrying TTG may be taking on too much projects (the whole "it's too many projects, quality may decrease" discussion, blah blah), they show us they are still humble to say it out loud: "Ok, we need more time to make this game really good!"
Bravo Telltale! BRAVO!!
Taking more time so we get a higher quality product really is commendable.

Good. Lately, especially with BTTF, I got a feeling of anxiety, an urge to release episodes before they're really 100% complete. Take your time, dear TellTale, EVEN WITH THE UPCOMING EPISODES OF THE BTTF FRANCHISE. Please, quality first.

This sucks....Now I have to wait even longer... Honestly I probably won't even buy it because of this. I've waited long enough. Quality first: I agree. But don't set an expected release date if you can't make the deadline with a quality product for your consumer base. If the date would have been sometime in the fall to begin with I would be okay. But now its like blue balls........

The only thing that's really annoying the living hell outta me is that TTG can't put a fixed date on games.

I mean the BTTF series. Is it soooo hard to give out a date - at least within a months or weeks notice?! Or putting up: "Late April"?

I was fed up with these kinda tactics ever since "Get Tannen!", so I'm only checking the Wiki page and not TTG's page. I don't wanna reward their page with a hit if they don't change their information policy.

I'm not 12 anymore searching for easter eggs, I'm waiting for a game and I sure as hell won't check their page each and every day. That's the reason I've cancelled the pre-ordering of episodes after "Get Tannen!". I wanna have a date to prepare for.

I'm gonna buy the 5-pack after it's out, but then again, that's got time until next christmas when it's gotten cheaper.

Since I already own all TTG games, I'll use the voucher for Jurassic Park.
Thanks for the refund and free game, Telltale!! :-D

@Archer: "I don't wanna reward their page with a hit"
How does just browsing TTG's site reward them?. It's not like they have advertising banners they could profit from (only internal banners pointing places in this same site).

Anyway, I agree they could be more specific about release dates, but I think putting out monthly releases is good enough. Why care if an episode will be released one day or another in the same month? I have a whole lot of things to do other than wait for a new TTG game, so when it comes out it's a nice surprise ;-)

I hope the next BTTF episodes get better, though.

April 28, 2011, 4:56 pm
@Alan Johnson - Honestly, I wasn't expecting the game so soon after BTTF. I didn't preorder, but this is amazing for the people that did. TTG just keeps showing me that you're a great company. Fall is a long time away, but I don't care. I'm having too much fun with BTTF.

Keep up the amazing work!
Comment by Monorail Man
April 29, 2011, 1:08 am
@OMA: I've meant it just like I've said it. It's not as if they're making money on hits, but it's a saying that one doesn't reward somebody with one's own presence because of this and that.

I've got no problem with the company or the BTTF games which are actually pretty nice. It's just a piss-poor time and schedule management.

I hate to admit it but I really have to make room for playtime in my schedule and the sooner I can work with complete timeframes, the better ;-)

That's awesome guys. Postponing a release is the exactly right decision in most cases, especially in the games industry. And free vouchers? You rock :)

Just one little niggle: I know you're a big company now, but for heavens sake, don't start using company speech. I started sensing it in the two letters above. It'll be no more than six months before "synergistically" creeps in somewhere, and from there on out it's all downhill. I am seriously not joking, this is the best way to alienate actual people, which would be a crying shame because you guys are pretty much the coolest company around.
