Sam & Max vs. the Wii
Posted by emily September 14, 2006
Mega-update, April 4, 2008: Sam & Max Wii is now a reality! Look here for the details.

News flash, Friday afternoon: They took notice! We got a phone call from Nintendo this afternoon. We'll take it from here - please don't email them anymore!

A funny thing happened last Tuesday at around lunchtime. An email landed in my inbox titled "Sam & Max for the Wii/Mac?" That's not the funny part. I (along with about ten other people in the company) get the email sent to Telltale's feedback account forwarded to me, and now and then someone writes in asking about certain platforms or proclaiming their undying love and devotion to Telltale's episodic model. The funny part was when, less than a minute later, I got another email with the subject "Sam & Max & Wii?" The first was from someone in Detroit; the second was from Sweden. Coincidence? I think not.

In spite of the uncanny timing, it took two more emails before I put aside the very important marketing work I was doing to go in search of the source. Several days earlier, Mixnmojo (the best place to get Telltale-related news other than Telltale's own blog!) picked up on a comment Dan made during one of his PAX appointments about the fact that Sam & Max would be a good fit for the Wii. That had been on Mojo a few days already, and we hadn't received any mail about it, so it seemed odd that it would only now be generating a bunch of responses. Then a quick query on Blogger turned up this post on GoNintendo, which highlights the same quote from PAX that Mojo picked up on, and takes it one step further by inviting readers to email Telltale and encourage us to bring Sam & Max to the Wii.

In just a few hours, we received over a dozen enthusiastic emails to the feedback address about bringing Sam & Max to the Wii -- not bad considering that address usually only gets about one or two emails a week, and those are usually spam. (And I don't know how many other emails may have been sent to various Telltale addresses for which I am not on the recipient list.) I meant to write back to each and every one of the people who emailed the feedback address, but that aforementioned marketing work got the better of me. So, in one fell swoop, here's Telltale's official stance on the Wii issue:

We'd love to bring Sam & Max to the Wii. We already think it's a good fit (as evidenced by Dan's comment at PAX). In fact, Heather brought up way back in January how great the Wii controller would be for an adventure game (of course, back then it was called the Revolution... what kind of a dumb name is that?), and we're great fans of Adventure Gamers' recent article on the subject. Thing is, us thinking it's a great idea isn't enough. We need the guys at Nintendo to agree. And with a company as big as Nintendo, getting noticed by the right people can be tricky.

If you want to keep emailing us about how great Sam & Max would be on the Wii, please do. It's great to see how many people are interested in this sort of thing (and we know that for every mail we get, there are a bunch more of you out there who didn't write). But it would be even better if you'd contact Nintendo and tell them what a great idea it is. Maybe if enough fans write in, they'll take notice?

Don't bother with an online petition though. We all know those don't do any good.

Try to get Sam & Max on the Virtual Console. I can't imagine Nintendo refusing something like that.

Sam & Max needs to be on the Wii. The controls are perfect, and more importantly this is the kind of crazy and awesome content Nintendo needs to have in their online channel. Its success there can only be a good thing for future crazy games.

Emily, the clear marketing tactic here would have been to tell everyone to email Nintendo under no less than 150 assumed names under the threat of canceling Sam & Max for the third (or fourth?) time.

I didn't realize it was a matter of getting Nintendo to "notice" you. Developers aren't allowed to make contact and ask for consideration? It takes fan mail for them to even give a look? I thought they were crying out for indie games on the virtual console, and yet I've never seen a list of games anywhere.

Emily: Here's a copy of what I wrote in the form. Anyone can take this letter as the base for your message to Nintendo of America.

Dear Nintendo of America:

Today, a developer company by the name of Telltale Games expressed an interest in developing and porting titles for the Wii virtual console. Telltale Games is a company founded by renounced and accomplish former LucasArts designers and have help pioneered episodic game publishing.

Currently, Telltale has released two episodes of Bone, based on the popular comic books, and soon to release a season based off of the popular "Sam and Max" franchise. "Sam & Max" will feature six episodes for the first season. The title is being released independently by Telltale as well as an exclusive first-release at Gametap. Telltale is looking to expand their release channels and hopes to take advantage of the Wii controller and create a unique gaming experience for the Adventure game genre.

Telltale Games is eager to work with you in establishing a publishing relationship for the Wii virtual console. I would like to express my support in this measure and thank you for your consideration.

More information about Telltale Games is at their website:

Sincerely:

I like this idea , tell tale episodic content is perfect for this virtual console service.
And who doesn`t want to see a console version of Sam an Max,[anybody who doesnt is clearly not wel].
We can only hope this will catch Nintendo`s attention.

While where at it, why not a version for xbox 360 marketplace too ?.or ps3 HUB. This might fire up the casual gamers who will get used to the idea of episodic content, and will fully implement it .

I`ll make sure everybody i know will get in on this, it`s an opportunity too golden to let pass.

Well, shoot. I hope the virtual console doesn't end up being a lot of wasted potential because Nintendo's making it too difficult for developers to reach them.

I was being sarcastic. :) In general I don't put too much stock in online petitions, but in this case I think the petition had a lot to do with why Telltale's putting the finishing touches on a new Sam & Max game.

Also send an e-mail to nintendo. What i dont get is that Nintendo wouldent send out an dev kit. Adventure (point and click) games are a very good genre for new and non gamers as wel as veterans. You can play these games with simple macanics and at your own speed. This is very easy to pick up and play!!!!

SO please dont give up trying to get Sam and Max to the Wii.

maybe you arent to glad but look at al the positive feedback to scumVM. Alot of people still realy love games like this! Dont let the genre die!

I have to say Im not too sure why putting the game on the Wii would be a good idea for anything other than getting the Telltale name noticed.

The Wii remote is going to be abused as it is. Itll be shoved into games for the sake of it and the whole affair will just get more annoying as time moves on.

How can it possibly be better for a point and click game than the good old tried-and-tested mouse? Will pointing a remote control at a TV to move around make the game any more fun? Not unless youre the kind of person who gets their jollies from channel surfing.

Do you own a Nintendo DS? People said that about the touch screen too. But developers have done impressive things with it.

Two things: firstly the Wii would help expose Sam & Max to a larger market. If you are perfectly happy playing on your PC than maybe you are not the person who would be stoked about having your adventure games in another format. Secondly: if you spend so much time in front of a computer during the day that you don't even want to look at one when you get home, if you enjoy playing games from the cuddly comfort of your couch, or if you would like to easily share the gaming experience with a couple of friends, then you might actually really enjoy having our games be Wii friendly. (Maybe that was four things actually).

the game isnt even out yet and we are already dangerously close to dumbed down console versions.. look at monkey island 4, broken sword 3, etc etc.. consoles are not ment for adventure games, wii mote or not :(
Comment by Crow
September 15, 2006, 5:07 pm
Then don't get the console version! Do you not understand that the more people who play the game, the better? Besides, how will it be dumbed down? The interface can be perfectly replicated...there's no difference. If Telltale and Nintendo work something out, Sam & Max will get seen by more people and its success could inspire other indie developers.

"Do you own a Nintendo DS? People said that about the touch screen too. But developers have done impressive things with it."

Yes I do. And from the games I own Id have to say the dual screens are more useful than the touch feature. Sonic Rush, Mario Kart, James Pond.

Developers will feel obliged to use the Dual Screens. They pretty much have to or reviewers will put them down for not doing so.

The touch screen feature? Not so much.

A couple of games use the touch screen well. Phoenix Wright being the main one. Speeds up the process of playing quite a bit.

On the other hand theres Rainbow Island. Yeah. I wont say anything. Ill just sit here saddened over that butchering.

Then theres plenty that dont use it, or do so as a last second thought which doesnt really make much difference to the game, which is fine.

The problem with the Wii is that the remote is the default controller if you will. Its packaged in, and its the thing being hyped up by Nintendo. Ill be extremely surprised if the vast, vast majority of developers opt to use the normal controller over the remote.

Why? Two reasons.
1) They know everybody will have the remote. Why risk losing sales because some people dont have the normal controller?
2) Its almost as if its expected of them. Nintendo are basing their whole console around this thing. Its going to be their make or break feature.
3) Most gamers are more interested in graphics than gameplay. Sad? Maybe. True? Absolutely. Nintendo cant compete on a graphical level. That much is obvious. What are developers supposed to do to attract people to buy games on the Wii when a similar game on the 360/PS3 looks much better? Wii remote will be their answer.

As an example, Midway have mentioned using the remote for the Mortal Kombat game. While Im aware that I havent played it, obviously, I dont see how thats going to work well at all. Maybe youre more imaginative than me and can point out exactly how this could possibly work well?

Another problem, one which relates more to adventure games. The touch screen is much more precise than what is essentially the equivalent of a light gun. For this reason it works well on Phoenix Wright. Pixel hunting with a remote? No thanks.

Now maybe Im just being a little bit pessimistic here. But maybe not. Time will tell.

I do hope it goes well for Nintendo. Competition is always a good thing, and the more choice for games the better right? But I have to say that theres little chance that Im going to preorder the Wii. Until Ive had the chance to play a variety of different games on it Ill stay at a safe distance.

"Two things: ..."

I agree on the first thing, certainly, thats the reason I mentioned.

The difference between a monitor and a TV screen, to me, are pretty obsolete. I dont spend 9-5 working on one though, so I can appreciate that other people feel quite differently.

I will question that last bit though. Cant have you getting away that easily now, can we? Does this mean youd make changes to the game if brought out on Wii, other than the obvious one of mouse-to-remote control? Changes that allow more than one person to play along in a manner of doing something other than just passing ideas on to the person in control? Because that can be done on a PC just fine.

I mean when you can fit 6 people on a single bed all playing Heroes of Might and Magic quite happily on a laptop... a couple of people around a monitor? Pfft. No problem.

Sorry about the long post. Got carried away there for a minute... or twenty. And I know Im being a little argumentative pain here, but.. err.. its only because I care? :p

Yes I was hoping for a sam and max WII or XBOX 360 version that could be played on my couch on the HDTV in 16:9 and 5.1 sound like a movie.

I will have major problems picking the PC or WII sam and max they both have there own good things.

I might go with WII if it looks as good as PC and has the above 16:9 and 5.1 sound though.

a special sam and max the uses the WII remote would make me get the WII one like using it to swing a bat or something.

I have a PC but I am just saying that I would much rather play this game on the Wii. It seems like a game that my best friend and maybe a few other can all come over and enjoy. Sam and Max always is very funny and when I play games on the PC, its pretty much me by myself with my mic talking over Vent or Skype. But if I had it on the Wii, we could all sit around on the couch and have a good Saturday afternoon or whatever. So here's me giving a thumbs up or whatever to the idea of Sam and Max on the Wii.

According to the most accurate information source known to mankind - 'the internet' - the WII dev kits are quite cheap. Under 2000$ seems to be a common claim. Surely a good looking bunch of game developers could find someone to give them a free one. In Australia certain state governments paid for console dev kits for the last generation. I hope they jump on the wii bandwagon. Oh thats a great idea ..... Telltale to relocate to Australia.

I also think this should appear on Xbox Live Arcade for the 360. Episodic content fits right in there, and you've stated that the game is around 75 mbs - if you could reduce that to 50 mbs (which is the current size limit for Live Arcade games) you'd have yourselves a hit.

The most obvious problem is the point and click nature of the game, if the control scheme could be adapted, (which I'm sure it can because other adventure games have been released on consoles) - go for it!

Please take a look at the Xbox Live Marketplace if you haven't already (which I'm sure you have since you are some smart folks).

Yes, I'd like to see Sam & Max for the Wii, especially where you could have them talk to players on the Wii Remote Speaker, like if you try to get them to use the phone or something. I believe the duo would be ultimately great for the system itself because it would work on all levels.

You could even make exclusive episodes where the duo make inside jokes about Nintendo and the gaming industry as well. Like have a TriForce in Max's stash, and when Sam asks about it, Max could say, I got it off a guy in tights who apparently has a serious problem with lycantrophy. Mentioned something about Twilight, told him I'm not Rod Serling, then jacked it from him when he wasn't looking.

Sam would probably say You confound me at times, little buddy.

Hey, the possibilites are endless. I still have the Sam & Max Surfing the Highway GN, as well as recalling the animated show, and love the games as well.

I definitely hope this comes to the Wii.

I have an xbox 360 and a Nintendo wii. If I had to pick a system for the game I would pick the wii. Although it would be cool to see the game run in 720p or something similar, the wii mote would make it so much more enjoyable. I would like to see this game for the wii and with the option to run it in wide-screen 480p. If only I had that then I would be set.

P.S. I don't like the virtual console idea. My wii only has 512MB of memory and I don't want a game that had been down-sampled in any way to make it super tiny to fit on my console. If thats the case I'll probably just get the pc version on cd.

Good god! I can't believe a blog would get so many bots!

Anyway, I was going to say that while I really like the idea of Sam and Max for the Wii, I would not buy it. The reason being that I already own Sam and Max for the PC.

It doesn't mean I don't think it should be on the Wii, I do. What I'm saying is that I think Telltale should first create a new game exclusively for the Wii, prompting fence-sitters like me to buy the console and thus ingratiating themselves with Nintendo while simultaneously expanding their own fanbase. Only then should they port earlier games over for the benefit of the uninitiated.

And yes, I know this is a few months late.

Me and a coworker has been talking about this from now and again that Sam and MAx, being an adventuregame for mouse would be perfect for Virtual Console as the Wii remote works as a mouse and we dont have to fiddle around with credit cards and stuff. We just download it on VC and presto, instant gaming.

So, I now did a search to see whats happening and found a post on a swedish gamingsite that referred to this post.
