First Episode of The Walking Dead Seeing Great Critical Acclaim!
Posted by @jobjstauffer April 24, 2012

The Walking Dead is out of the gate on PC, MAC, Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network, and the critics are already getting behind the first episode of the season, 'A New Day,' with high praise!

Early critical response to Telltale’s first episode of the series has gathered an intensely positive reaction from gaming critics across the web.  In their review, IGN.com awarded the episode an Editors' Choice nod, saying, “’A New Day’ is one of Telltale’s finest games,” also stating, “...This is a deeply personal and emotional experience, and that’s why it feels so right as a part of this franchise.  The site continued to claim, “…The Walking Dead Episode one has just about everything fans could want.”

Other critics also continued their praise, with Official Xbox Magazine also awarding the episode an Editors' Choice with a 9 out of 10, saying the episode was, “Slam-bang entertainment,” adding that, “Everything just feels right” with its “Striking art style and cinematic presentation.”

Gaming site Polygon also gave the game an impressive 9 out of 10, saying, "With choices that matter and intensity to spare, Telltale Games delivers one of its best efforts to date." They continued to say, "...the first episode of The Walking Dead held me in as I was thrown from one story-twisting, heart-stopping conflict to another, disaster threatening if I looked away from the screen even for a moment." The reviewer also claimed the episode was, "...one of the most intese gaming experiences in my recent memory," and that, "So many games have teased a truly "interactive" narrative, but I can think of none that have delivered this well.

To kick off the launch of the first episode this week, Telltale games also released an all-new trailer, focusing in on the story of Lee Everett as he begins his chance at redemption in the first episode amid a world over-ridden by an undead apocalypse bringing out both the brightest and the darkest sides of humanity.

Check back soon for more details on The Walking Dead and also, don't miss our exclusive content and giveaways on GameTrailers, as we've been chosen as the official Game of the Week!

I imagine this post will seem inflammatory to those who don't yet have access to the game.

Still, congratulations on some positive reviews.

I am amazed that you advertise an April 24th release date on your Telltale Games website, yet have not provided any download for the game at all as of yet. You allow for the game to be released from competitor retailers such as Steam and PSN...even offering the preorder deal offered on the Telltale store...giving their customers advanced opportunity to play the game. Much less restrict a Telltale store customer from accessing any information on various websites, due to the chance of encountering any spoilers.

I preordered this game on April 10th.... it is the 24th, Release Day..5pm EST and no game that I paid for through Telltale Game's store. But Steam and PSN have versions....and even heard of another source offering it. I mean seriously... THIS is how you treat your paying customers?? I know that there is a 3 hour delay from EST to PST....but does it seriously take you all day to get this client to your webstore customers? It couldnt possibly, as other retailers already have theirs.... and seeing as how it is Digital... still dont see how it could still be unavailable.
And if reports of Steam versions being buggy and Telltales being better due to the later release are true....then why even set today as a Release Date at all??? Apparently it is not even finished.

Do you understand that people have set aside hours and hours on this day to get the game... putting aside any other affairs just so they can get their copies and spend time playing the game...on the day of it's release?? Is this truly the way that you treat your own customers, whom go to your own website in order to purchase games so that all of the monetary sales go directly to you, and not percentages going to outside retailers? I mean seriously, I am trying to remain calm and understand my excitement for the game has me expressing outrage as such...but this is truly an outrage as a paid Telltale Game store customer.

ITT: Butthurt people mad because a game didn't come out at EXACTLY the hour they want it to. Telltale has had site problems before, you can't blame them for whatever is happening when you don't have all the details.

Take a nap, go do something that is actually constructive instead of just getting mad and then everyone will feel better. And by the time you are done, you will most likely be able to play your game. Everyone wins.

Seriously, it's just depressing to see people getting so worked up about this for no real good reason.

@The Highway
Yes. Yes we can. There is more to testing just the game for release dates. Servers are tested thoroughly as well. Blizzard just had their Open Beta weeken, that pissed some people off because they could not get in...but the Beta Test was testing the Log In Servers and such. THAT is what IS directly in the hands of the developer. Telltale NOT doing this over and over again is a fact they were the ones who dropped the ball. And if this is not the first time this has happened....how did Einstein put it, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"!!! And this is being done over and over and over. PLEASE! Get over your fanboy self.

My only problem was the reticule being extremely difficult to see at low resolutions. Quit your whining, calm yourselves, and deal with it. The fact that they comp'd everyone who pre-ordered from the site a Steam code IN ADDITION to the on-site download is more than generous enough to compensate for the issues. Getting butthurt and posting "RAWR NO BUSINESS FROM ME BECAUSE I'M IMPATIENT" will do nothing. People who didn't pre-order are going to buy despite all the angry comments.

After playing Episode 1 and coming back here to leave some positive feedback, I saw angry people.

Given that:

Game:

Length - A (long enough to bond with characters, not long enough to seem like a slog)

Character Building - A (Showing the progression of Lee through character actions was wonderfully clever)

Immersion - C+ (Some game breaking moments like character model glitching [example: Herschel and his pitchfork] and some background sprite issues at higher resolutions)

Gameplay - B (This isn't objective, I'm not a HUGE fan of point n click adventure games but this game certainly made me take interest)

Compatibility - A (Unlike most games, changing the graphical options actually worked, instead of just making the textures ugly. I had massive lag with all high settings, but turning them down didn't throw the looks out the window, only the lag.)

Ending - A+ (The wait for the next episode will be fun. :D)

Fanbase:

80% angry assholes

20% people who are just happy to play a game that's well written and engaging.

Keep them coming TellTale, I'll keep buying.

just finished playing and i really enjoyed the 1st episode! i was one of the persons who was waiting for the release day but i did not check on the site to download on the 24th because i was tired from work and it was more of a passing thought. MY LIFE DOES NOT STOP FOR A GAME. i was not cancelling plans or putting anything on hold because of this game.

steam clocked me at 2 hrs, give or take a minute, for total game play and that's probably because i paused for a while. even so, 2 HOURS out of 24 HOURS. 16 of which i more than likely would be up. take away 2, that leaves me with 14 hrs left in my day and i'm going to cancel plans for that?! i don't think so. i play when i get time. i wish i had you other peoples lives who has nothing else better to do than to wait on a game to come out.

i understand the principle of the matter. if TT says the game is coming out on a day then it should come out on ALL platforms (if noted) and be available everywhere the game is sold, ESPECIALLY on the home site, on that day. HOWEVER! if it's not, I'M not going to let that bother me because i got better things to do anyway. the game can wait.

NOW on to the game itself. i saw no significant glitches with the game at it's highest setting while i played on steam. sure i hated installing more crap but i had a little more time than i normally do so i went ahead and played.

the game controls took a little getting used to but i think by the time i had to first defend myself, i caught on pretty quick. i like that my decisions gear the current and future episodes but since some of us DID play on stream are we going have to play through it again when it's finally released on the site? if so, i think we should keep getting these steam codes as well. i never replay an episode and i would hate to start now without having had played the entire game. sure, i may play again and change my choices but i want to play through the game with my CURRENT choices to see how it plays out.

i think so far that's my only gripe.

I got some critical piece of feedback too! I finished the first episode and wasn't sure what the heck is wrong with the game, not letting me start ep 2. BUT hey, this is not a bug, this is intended!

PLEASE FIRE the goddamn idiot who came up with this idea to publish a ONE, ONLY ONE EPISODE of the game! This is the WORST purcahse I made in long time. You guys are bankrupt or something? Can't afford to release one whole game?

This is sad (understatement).

After having Steam(ing pile of feces) lose my account with all the games I had paid for a few years ago, and then tell me that they had no way to prove which ones I owned, I swore (multiple times )I would never use Steam(ing pile of feces) again.

Before pre-ordering this game, I actually e-mailed Telltale and asked if they would have it ONLY available for PC through Steam(ing pile of feces). I was told that all Telltale games can be downloaded directly from their servers and that I would NOT be required to use the Steam(ing pile of feces) client.

What The FRAK!!!!!!!!

I will never put Steam(ing pile of feces) on another pc that I own, so apparently I don't get to play. Telltale better refund my money liked I requested OR make the game available from THEIR servers like I was promised from before I placed my pre-order.

Please stand up and take responsibility for your actions Tell tale. Have a rep post something in the forums about why this is happening and IF the game will be available from you directly.

Ok, so I just got it today and played it today, 4/27/2012. I loved it. As a true-blue Walking Dead fan that has both the comics and the TV show episodes, I love it! It kinda was a tiny skippy in the drugstore fight scene. But that was about it. Hopefully you all will release a patch or something as time goes on. I am playing this on XBOX 360, btw. I already plan on getting Episode 2-5 AS SOON AS THEY COME OUT. Loved the game so far, but hated Jurassic Park. You have definitely gained a frequent customer, and I salute you. Keep up the good work, and I beg you not to disappoint us. I kinda like the episode idea for this game, keeps the anticipation up, and its closer to how the show or comic would be, releasing the whole story at different times. I love it. Both me and my fiance loved playing through it and seeing the different choices available and the different outcomes. I don't know what everyone else is complaining about but i give it 5/5 stars so far.

Wow...So many idiots here complaining when the game is released, have you noticed that Xbox are running there Next promotion right now? To me its pretty obvious it was there decision to release this game late as not to interrupt there promotion, lets face it, that Bloodforge game looks rubbish, what else could derail the success of that game than this one? Hello,

Played the game and I thought it was great. Wish it had been a bit longer though. Not digging the fact that I'll have to wait for the next release. Which leads me to ask if there is a confirmed date yet?
The game definitely feels like it is out of the pages of The Walking Dead Comics. Would have liked a bit more action and a few more missions, but not a deal breaker at this point since it is only the beginning. Congrats Tell Tale & Robert Kirkman.... Now give me MORE!!!!!

Ha ha! Was only looking for a release date for ep2! Didn't find that, but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone crying like newborns. Funny as fook. Grow up you freaks. To those crying about the length, that's what episodic means and it's cheap as hell. Perhaps research would be a good idea before buying something. It worries me that people can be so stupid.

Anyway ep1 is awesome and I would recommend it to any fans of the source material and adventure games in general. Played through it 3 times already making different choices. Quality.

P.s. where is my game! Boooo hooooo! Ha ha. I love the angry masses!

Forgot to mention, I played on Xbox 360 and I couldn't care less that people on other formats got this first. Again, this is because I am not a complete tool.

I might as well add Xbox is better than ps3 (I have both) and cod is better than bf (I have both). Also, my dad is harder than your dad!

Wow, didn't realice the game was out yet. Strangely I haven't gotten any mail telling me that the game I preordered was done yet. I was sure it stated that I should have gotten a mail telling me that the game was ready for download. I mean... It's April now... and I preordered. Witch means I should be one of the first to actually be able to try this game. Because that's what preorder is, right? Getting to test stuff as soon as it comes out before others who didn't preorder. First in line and all. Looking forward to test out this game maybe later today or tomorrow. I have to see when I have the time to test out.

I played through the first episode 2.5 times in 4h. So it's quite short first episode I think, as the full playtime seem to be about 10h if they keep this format.

Other than that the game seem pretty cool with a story telling feeling. The choices you can make are mostly feeling and doesn't seem to have much impact on the story (yet). It's also quite hard to pick that much different choices and stay in character - besides picking who you want to save in certain situations.

An ok game and I look forward spending another 2-4h with the 2nd episode.

To all of you people complaining that this game isn't out yet, its simple, stop being a fool and get a working computer. I played this game the day it came out because I played it on a PC :) the way gaming is intended.

Wow... now I tried the game. I kind of liked how you did things and you could get to meet up with some of the guys from the comix. Still, the game kind of made me feel bad. I mean, choosing your own actions and trying to risk saving someone. I mean... two people are dead because of me. I had to choose one person over another. It kind of sucks. And honestly, I would try to save both, but I never get time enough to save both. I sort of feel selfish with some actions. When I choose to save Duck, I still felt bad even tough I knew that I had to make the choices I would have done. And regarding dough... I really liked him. He seemed like a really nice guy. And I did want to save him, but I couldn't let the best shooter we had get killed either. We would stand a much less chance of surviving without the strongest ones left. Of course, it was because if the strength itself, I wouldn't have saved Duck. I actually defended Kenny and gave him support all the way and I actually feel like I actually made a friend. Something good came out of it at least.

I hope in next episode, I won't have to decide beetween who's going to live and die. The choices are so hard. I kind of understand Hershall better now. Now that I saw what happened to his son. Still, if I had saved him. He would be dead one way or another. The boy... Duck. I don't know if he will survive or not, but I'm sure as hell are not going to let anyone kill him. Then Hershall's son died for nothing. Hmm. I woudn't have survived without him there. And to think I wasn't able to save him.

I seriously didn't like the choices I had to make...

What can I say that hasn't already been said. Didn't thin much about TWD under first impression, but after playing this masterpiece, im HIGHLY interested in the series altogether! You never know when you have to make a serious decision that could be grave, just wish I had left Doug at that station :( lol. And you know what I like the most about this new series? The sweet anticipation of the next episode. The internet stomps all over any form of suspense and tension in dramas these days, with the easy access of watching a whole series in a couple of days. Tell Tale's making us wait, and I LOVE IT. Trust me guys, you'll enjoy the experience that much better!

Another thing I didn't mention is that thing I really like about the walking dead that I haven't seen a lot of in other series. They have this moments of calmness. Those moments when you actually don't have to feel like you're constantly on the run from walkers. There's some moments when you actually kind of feel safe. And that the game kept that calmness. The feeling of safety. You can actually breath for a moment, but only a moment. Then the good things go away. The moment before season 1. That cliffhanger. That wasn't like right in the middle of something big, but it felt so symbolic. Great that we actually get to know Lee too. I mean, when the game starts out, you don't really know if Lee is innocent or not. Since I didn't know if he was innocent or not, I just tough it didn't hurt to be honest to people. I don't think Lee is a bad guy. I think he did something a lot of people could do if they had been in his position. So yea, I feel I can actually do the choices I think I would have done myself in that situation.

Igor: What? You have played episode 1 without buying the full game? I didn't even know there was an option to buy separate episodes. At least not when preordering. If you bought the preorder, you bought the whole season and not just one episode.

wow you guys are such buttholes, you'll get it when you get it, no need to show your lack of intelligence and insult and abuse these people with your dimwitted words, these are human beings and they have feelings, you get this way over a game? really if you get that mean over a video game then you need to sell your PC 360 Wii Ps3, because your just pathetic.

@shank on psn I know you can buy each episode for 5 bucks a piece, which = out to 25 bucks, if you purchase the whole season at once its only 20 bucks.

Haha, I just found this page and have just absolutely laughed my ass off reading all the butthurt comments from you all on the 24thand 25th. When you take a day off from your normal duties and life in general to play a game you purchased that, in case you didn't know this, you will have forever, you kind of deserved the wait. Real Life= more important than Virtual Reality. I love video games, but you little girls just crack me up. You all wait for midnight releases of map packs and special characters for other games? Haha

Well they should not get ahead of their heads since The Walking Dead is so popular that it sells well not because of their programming and design.

I got my game on the 24th. The original release date was the 20th. As disappointing as it was I continued to wait, and it was worth it! The games replay factor is astonishing. There are only a handfull of games I'm likely to revisit anf this one made the cut. I'm not a fan of the amount of clicks needed to accomplish simple movements but the decision making made it all worth while. The action wasn't too bad either. My only question is when will episode 2 arrive?

Sorry la, but the official PC/Mac release date always was April 24th and no other date was ever announced, whatever delusions the retailer of your choice must have harbored.
