The Walking Dead Sells a Million Episodes
Posted by Alan May 17, 2012

Much like a herd of walkers, The Walking Dead, our game based on Robert Kirkman's award-winning comic book series of the same name, powers on! In just two weeks, the game series has sold a million episodes and received critical acclaim from the press!

The Walking Dead has topped the charts on XBox Live and Steam, and just a few days ago was named the number four selling game on PlayStation Network in April (with less than a week in the wild that month)! Fans and critics alike have been enjoying (is that the right word?) making the difficult and sometimes gut-wrenching decisions Episode 1 has called for, and you can expect to be doing more of that in Episode 2 - coming in June.

We'd like to say thank you to the fans - without you, the success of The Walking Dead would not be possible!

Have you played The Walking Dead yet?

You more then earned the success. "The Walking Dead" is the perfection of everything you guys have learned from your previous titles and it shows. Amazing characters, fantastic story on par with the Comics (and certainly better then the AMC series...) and really great intuitive gameplay mechanics. An easy Five out of Five. Can't wait for Episode 2 (though I am dreading the choices I might have to make...)

>> or is it because of a delay?

Well, producing all those "look how well our game is received -- buy it!"-videos and articles probably takes away development time. Or episode one was some kind of showcase work and TTG wants to benefit from the good ratings as much as possible, before the ratings drop when episode 2 is out? ;)

It's some serious BS that the next episode doesn't come out until June, when it CLEARLY states in the description of the game download both on XBL and PSN that they are "to be released monthly". So someone buys the package deal on PSN for all 5 episodes in order to save 5 bucks, and the release dates aren't kept as promised? Maybe this is why I didn't see the option to buy all 5 episodes in advance on XBL because they foresaw this very problem? I love the game but don't tell me it's going to be monthly if it's going to take two months between releases. :/

TTG usually takes a month break after the first episode of a season (they did that for the first two seasons of Sam & Max, for Back to the Future, and some others) .
After the June release, it will probably be monthly, with the last episode in September.

I'm going to state that much like the rest I am extremely unhappy that the second episode will be coming in June. In fact, I am almost irate. It was stated that one episode would be coming each month. At this point I've already exhausted everything that episode one can give me. What to do in the meantime? Well, I certainly can't play Walking Dead because even though you took my money you failed to deliver your product.

Hey. I've got the majority of TellTale games on my shelves and just wanted to say you guys are awesome. You treat the material and your customers with respect, don't screw us with DRM, are one of the few companies who use downloadable content to benefit the game-making process, and are even willing to provide a physical copy for free (minus shipping price of course) to those who bought a game series digitally. The business sense behind that last point is so mind-blowingly uncommon in this industry.

I both loved and hated this first episode. I honestly didn't like that I had to choose who would live and die. Well, we didn't get to see much effect of the greyzone things. Like who you where siding with, who you cared for and stuff like that. Maybe we will see more effect of that later on. Now that I was honest with Hearshall and he came to trust me, I can't actually see how that can matter for the rest of the game consider that he blamed me because his son got killed.

other than that, I think Billy has my back and I have actually gotten a friendship that might help me survive. I can honestly say I'm exited to see how the rest of the game will turn out. If instead of just howing to pick who's going to survive and who's not. Maybe it even will bring up choices where I see that some people might be a danger to the group and that I can either try to deal with it or I can actually choose to let some people die. Maybe even kill other humans. It's apocalyptic and that we might get choices like that. Honestly, I see one person that I allready consider a danger to the group.

Hey, everyone complaining that the late release date is unacceptable, shut up. You just can't handle the fact that the game may have needed some extra testing. Perhaps you forget that gaming isn't the same as an office job. If they had stated that the game would come out on a specific date, then your complaints would be valid, but if they don't give a date, you can't hold them overtly accountable. Sure, it's going to suck that I have to wait a little longer than expected to play through the rest of the game, but it's 20$ for all the episodes on the season pass, or 25$ if you buy them one episode at a time. Besides, how many other games have had their release date pushed back MONTHS for one reason or another?

And money grubbing? You guys are idiots... You pay 5$ LESS for future access to everything... Yeah, they clearly gouged you guys. I mean, how else could you explain that they WILL give you what you paid for, in a timely fashion. Hell, this could be a marketing ploy for the TV series. (I almost expected them to release each episode to correspond with the Issue release dates for the Graphic Novel/Comic.) Quit complaining and just WAIT! You already knew it was going to be long, a couple extra weeks isn't going to kill you.

TTG, I am sorry for all the irate gamers who can't handle a push back, a marketing idea, or whatever it is. Sometimes, I'm not surprised the Gamer stereotype is still pretty strong, and depressing.

Wow, are some of these kids really bitching and crying about the second episode not getting released till June? It is a delay of 2-3 weeks, get over it. Who are you to demand that something not get a little extra development/ testing time? Would you rather have a rushed turd of a game come out so that is must get patched a week after release or would you rather have a solid, fun and well crafted experience? I think I read a post that said they were going to try to get s refund for a 2 week delay, go to hell you spoiled little brat and welcome to the real world, you know the one that does NOT revolve around you. /end of rant

Comment by JustinB

Episodes usually take 4-6 weeks. I would rather they take their time in making it as best as possible.
Remember this game has lots of complexities based on the decisions youve made, and if done properly we will get a proper ending based on all our choices and decisions (unlike mass effect 3 where we have 1 ending in 3 different colours) :D

First of all, all of you stating for others to shut up and stop voicing their annoyance - STFU! People are allowed to complain when they have paid in advance for something, and it's release is delayed! They may not have stated a specific date, but did state it would be monthly, and you have to go searching around the internet to find out it has been delayed. I am on their fb page, and no notice saying anything has ever appeared.

I don't mind waiting for a quality product, I do mind not being told I have to wait. Whether on their fb page, or through the ps store, or whatever place you bought it from, we should have been informed.

Doubt anyone from TTG will read this but just incase, here's my say.
.....June.....its not May, even a child can understand that. This isn't acceptable, it was advertised as 1 episode per month. It isn't the waiting i'm angry about, its a good game so i don't mind that, its the fact that as an owner of a season pass (and so expecting what i had paid for) i had to find out by seeing it on the end of a trailor?!?!

Seriously have some respect for your customers and let us know. A simple email would of been nice "dear customer, unfortunately the next episode will be late, we apologise" thats it, right there. I would like to see some sort of an apology and compensation for this complete crap (no i'm not talking like free games, just something small and daft so we can understand this wasn't some marketing plot to let some more sales roll in before you actually get back to us that have already handed over our money)

Finally for those that i have seen posting comments saying "stop complaining" "it'l get here when it gets here", simple fact is if you pay for something it should be delivered as advertised. When companies pull stunts like this if there was no-one standing up and telling them its crap then it would happen more often and they would never learn.

i understand both sides, one dont mind a few extra weeks, if dont get a under par game, but either the lack of planning or trouble with testing (i happens, deal with) has got these people upset. if it were my company i would try to have at least one on the shelve and at least one in development, so i would have time if problems or should i say when ( murphy's law ) arise. for me just glad to be getting my zombie fix.

Actually now that I think about it I completely agree with the complainers: telltale fucked up, they should at least have the courtesy to notify the respective game dealers/info sites that it's delayed, instead of leaving us hanging.

It sucks that it doesn't come out till June. I am a new TTG fan, and after I bought episode 1 I went and bought Back the the Future, and the Jurassic Park game. I beat both titles in less than a month and the wait for walking dead episode 2 has been grueling!

Either way I will still be buying them when the do finally come out, and I am sure I will love them.
Although gaming isn't the same as other industries the companies still have to answer to the costumer, because without us they have no job.
I for one am tired of games getting pushed, and pushed, and pushed.

PS. TTG please release episode 3 one month after 2.

As a diehard Walking Dead fan, this is kinda messed up. I paid $25 or so with the idea in mind that you can create a 3 hour long episode in a month's span. How difficult can that be? Why wasn't the game simply finished before this? It's far from a graphical marvel, and you already have the gameplay engine set up. It's a matter of just getting it done, your game company has NOTHING that will ever be nearly as popular as this. Hell the game could have been trash and reached the top of the charts simply because it's part of the Walking Dead franchise.

Let's get a real game company to finish this on time.

TTG just says its coming out in June! They don't even say because of a delay and they don't even apologize! It is supposed to come out the end of May and they just change it to June! People who say don't complain let them complain! They have every right to! I mean don't get me wrong it's a great game but they say it will be released monthly people pay for it and then they change it to June! I mean I can wait but people should be able to get what they paid for at the time it says and it does say a new episode will be released every moth so people do deserve to be complaining.
TTG this better not happen with the rest of the episodes.

The third will most probably be released in June aswell and will continue on schedule. I don't get why people jump to such drastic measures and label them as scammers and con-artists, if only there was millions of other things you could be doing during this short period, such as playing something else or socializing, but that would be making sense now, wouldn't it?

Its June now, it was said to be released monthly. If you keep going back on deadlines your not giving yourselves any good reputation. It would be fine if you at least tell consumers there's going to be a delay, but you haven't. Since there's apparently no reason for episode 2 not coming out in may, where is it?

I'll wait the rest of the day for a release but if it's not here, i wont be buying the rest of these episodes as if it keeps up like this the franchise won't end til December. Tell tale, if you make deadlines and promises to your fans and consumers. Keep them.

To whoever was complaining: a monthly release does *not* mean exactly one month. Anything up to two months, rounded down, would be "acceptable" as advertisement. However, I have to admit I'm disappointed in the lack of communication regarding when the release date is. Take two months if you must, but at least let us know when it's coming out!

Now what, do I seriously have to check the website every day to check if it has been released?

Great job guys, so far, but please improve your communication. I know it's hard to set deadlines for programming jobs (managing a team of coders myself), but you could have delayed the first episode until you were confident enough that you could release it on a tight schedule.

Again, I can't complain too much about the release date (even though I'm looking forward to it), but the not knowing when is terrible.

I was looking forward to this..
I feel sorry for the people who have paid for them all in advance, i'm paying for mine one at a time; more expensive i know but this is the sorta problem i was worried about.
Very bad service! No-one has any word of release dates as it is, all we knew was "One per Month" and now you're not even keeping your word on that???
Geez..

Keep to your release dates. If a tv episode of walking dead was PUSHED BACK with NO WARNING there would be plenty of supporter backlash. I LIKE that there is MORE CARE put into it but saying "June" is the release date, with NO other ACTUAL DAY specifications makes me worried. It wasnt early June, Mid June, Late June. Just June. Im guessing that since you BROKE your 1 episode a month PLEDGE that it is probably going to be 1 EPISODE EVERY 2 MONTHS.

See you on Chapter 5 in December... way to keep taxing the walking dead out of me for 10 months. Gotta keep em reeled in huh?

Whats the one thing you cant recycle?.....Time

You are all so craptastic! It's been delayed, the game was good, the game WILL come out eventually. Just calm your faces, go play Diablo 3 and just wait. It's not like the game isn't going to come out like Duke Nukem took. For crying out loud people, it's just a game. It's going to be just as entertaining if it takes 3 months to come out. So from the mouth of Snoop Dogg "So just chill, 'til the next episode"!

Would be nice to have a date to look forward to, but I guess it's probably still being developed and the bugs worked out of it. So, I guess I'll just assume 31rst and be pleasantly surprised if I log on one day to find episode 2 waiting for me to download early. Great work btw. Love the game so far.

The worst part is they didn't tell their season passers about the delay, let alone apologise, let alone give a damn good reason why people shouldn't seek refunds for the defaulted promise of monthly releases. I hope Telltale are getting serious flak into their emails because this is shocking and illegal.

gotta love some people,
it's like they think a game has never been late before.
Can defiantly tell alot about people when they complain about stuff thats a little late. Their gonna need help later in life when they learn nearly everything is late. Hope they don't take the bus .

Also to those who are complaining, the game came out last week of April so is waiting till early June really that bad?

Either way great game, looking forward to the later episodes and as long as they keep up the same standard don't mind when they come out. Would rather wait and play a good polished game over a game which was rushed to make a deadline.

Also are there any plans for future episodes beyond 5?

Thanks again for an excellent game.

I think people are missing the point about some of the comments.

Yes, games are late.
Yes, movies get released late.
Yes, new cars are shipped late.
Everything can be late...but most (the most customer friendly and the companies that desire to build up a relationship with their customers because they know that they don't get paid unless customers pay them) revise release dates...update consumers on when exactly the new shipping date is...even if they have to change it every week they do it...AND give a reason.

It doesn't appear that anyone from TTG is interested in building customer relations...they already made their money off of us and now are taking their time and not really caring. Perhaps the days spent at E3 could have gotten the product shipped just that much faster.

It's not the end of the world if something is provided late...but a reason AND a new projected date (including the day...not just a 30 day period) is the usual norm.

I love Blizzard games...sadly they are well known for pushing back release dates over and over again...but at least it keeps the consumer informed of what is going on...and that is for products not sold yet. TTG already sold us a product and now is failing to give it to us with no explaination. If you ordered a steak and the waiter said it would be 15 minutes...and you wait 2 hours and still get nothing...not even a lame excuse, most of you would demand the meal for free AND never dine there again...

Its all about customer relations...

Before some fanboy tells me to STFU and stop complaining because I'm having a hissy fit or whatever, I have had to sit and wait through my fair share of game delays like everybody and I'm more than used to it by now. What i have a problem with is the same thing all the other rational 'complainers' have had, the lack of communication to paying customers is ridiculous, i mean, is it really that crazy to expect a simple e-mail or something saying, "sorry, the game has been delayed till at least this date for this reason, thanks for your patience." I loved the first episode and I can't wait for the second one, and if it's been delayed to test it a bit more and work on it to make it an even more enjoyable experience then that's fine, but where's the thought for the people who've been left hanging, right now the impression I'm getting from their silence is either something is seriously wrong with the company and they have no idea what they're doing, or they just don't care about the customers anymore since they've already got their money. However, unlike some of the irrational people here, i will not be immediately demanding a refund and boycott of all things telltale just because of a delay, because that's just silly :)

While I don't agree with 'the hate', I agree with being upset and disappointed at a breach of contract (delivering promised goods/services upon the agreed upon time). And for those saying to 'wait it out', we have a contract. If they want to update us, keep us informed, so we can make our own decision, that would be one thing. However, TTG is falling in with other business that think they can mistreat their customers and suffer no repercussions. This slipping level of standards is letting 'business' as a whole puts us in the position of being just another piece of their delivery model instead of being valued customers. Customers wouldn't have put up with this 30 years ago, but standards have been sliding ever since.

The only way this changes is if customers speak their mind with their dollars. If you are unsatisfied enough, demand a refund. If that doesn't work, sue -- and I'm not advocating everyone go out and sue TTG, I'm saying that you are responsible individually with what you do with your dollars and how much you value them (especially in these time). If you really care, incessantly whining here does nothing for you: you need to act.

I hope they come through soon. If they don't, I hope they offer an explanation and remedy. If they don't, I plan to act. And I plan to act within the two month anniversary. I think that's fair enough. And I'm planning on continuing this going forward, not only with TTG but others as well. Maybe if people wake up and start to act, we can turn this situation around, not only with TTG, but every other company that takes advantage of its customers with shoddy service and/or products.

The episodes are far too short to have such a long period of waiting. I am not hating, I am really disappointed. But may be we have to calculate this through. If a game like Diablo 3 with more than 50 h play time took almost 12 years, and Duke Nukem Forever with nearly 5h took 15 years, than a game with only 2 h game time will simply take forever!

tl;dr: playtime time down, dev time up

Dear TellTale bloggy people,

You should have more updates! Keep us posted! That's what most of us are pissed about.. not about the delay, just about being kept in the dark! I think you could take 2 minutes out of your busy schedule to update your fans! You're slowly losing customers :( But congrats on all the sales. Waiting, impatiently (lol) for the next episode! I hope after that you can get them out monthly :)
You better come out with a very heart-felt apology after it's finally released!!!! lol

Love from, a fan.
