TWD: Save game fix

posted by Remco32 on - last edited - Viewed by 11.1K users

The problem
I've finished both episode 1 and 2. When starting the game today to FINALLY play episode 3, the game only showed a savegame stating 'episode 1'. It looked like the game didn't save anything from episode 2.
In the folder containing the savegames (C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead), there were .save files that corresponded with episode 2 (save_11 - save_28). Apparently the game DID save the game (hence the files being there), but it isn't finding it for some reason.

The fix
The game reads the prefs.prop stored in X:\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default . Copy your prefs.prop file from the my documents folder (C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead) to the steamapps folder.

This is probably caused by a register error telling the game to read/write the prefs.prop file stored in the steamapps folder.
Note that this means you'll have to do this every time you restart your game!

tl;dr : Take a look in this folder for a prefs.prop : X:\Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default

PS. I made this thread in the discussion forum too to help as much people as possible. A fair trade for Telltale not helping AT ALL.

  • Still found nothing to help, might just have to redo Episode 3 and HOPE it works this time.

P.S. Seriously TellTale why when using the ingame downloader for getting new episodes is ALL the data being saved in the Documents folder. This presents all sorts of problems for backups and people who use multiple drives. These are common complaints whenever a game is released with this sort of data handling. I would of thought your developers would actually think such things through. It is also different to how Steam is handling the files... Why didn't you just stick to 1 method!

  • Thanks for this fix, it worked great for me.

Have they released a single patch fix between episode releases? I've never noticed. Telltale needs to quit being a complete letdown when it comes to patching. This fix couldn't possibly take them more than hour to create, package and submit to Steam.

  • @permie said: I dont' have a file in that folder, but I still have the save bug. What now?

Same for me. I don't have a prefs.prop in my Steam\steamapps\common\the walking dead\Pack\default folder. Tried the fix and it doesn't work for me either.

  • I do not know if anyone has noticed this, but if you loose access to your save you need to go into C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead, copy all your saves into a new folder.

From there, start up the game and play till the game autosaves (I actually played a little longer to make sure the game had saved.) Next you need to go back to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead and sort the files by date modified. What is happening is the game will save your new progress as one of the older save files, thus the game doesn't pickup on what save to start up as; it is messed up I know.

You need to then go back into that new folder I told you to create earlier and rename your last save as what ever is listed as the most recent save in the save folder. I.E. Your last save was save_18.save and when you restarted the game it saved it as save_8.save You would need to change the save_18.save to save_8.save and paste it into the C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead.

This is what I did in order to make the game save.

  • Bumping this since this has helped me out a lot.

  • Any other solutions out there? I've tried everything I can in this thread and it's still not reading my save files. They're all there (though the first few have been overwritten by new autosaves in my attempt to fix it), but it's still not reading my old game saves. I really want to play through episode 5 with all of my decisions. I've invested way too many hours in to this experience to start over with default decisions.

I should note that this is the first time I've tried playing the game since a fresh install of the retail release of Windows 8 (it worked perfectly in the consumer preview build).

  • I tried this and in the process inadvertently deleted/lost all save games. So yeah.... any tips or do I have to replay everything from the start?

  • Hello!
I'm playing steam version on Pc Win 7 32bit.
After ending Episode 2 game is crashing. I have restart it and starting to play Episode 3 but all my progress is lost... I have found in documents all save files, but i understand progress saving in prefs.prod file in the same directory (C:\Users\user\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead). I have found on this forum another prefs file, and many times had replay last chapter in Episode 2 and also try to replay Episode 1, but ALL TIME, my choosing for Doug alive NOT WORKING - f*ckin Carley still alive every time :-)
So please, help me! I needed prefs.prod version, who playing and choose Doug in Episode 1 . I want play Episode 3 in normal :-) Also i choose save Duck and take goods from vagon :-)

P.S. I also reinstall game and its not help, but don't want replay both episodes from start to end

Copying the prefs.prop to multiple places is actually one of the things that will break the savegames. Therefore I think this before someone else thinks it's a good idea.
