Walking Dead does not start, Win7, Steam (Merged Threads)

posted by HSuke on - last edited - Viewed by 3.8K users

I just bought the game from Steam and finished installing it with no problem. I verified that the game's local isn't damaged. All my other games are working fine. The directx file for the game has also been installed.

The game doesn't launch. When I attempt to launch it, the computer thinks for awhile, but nothing happens. After about 10 seconds, the game syncs its data with Steam, which suggests that the game closed itself.

I am running on Win7 with an nVidia GeForce GT 540M (through nVidia Optimus).

  • Judging by these forums and Steam, this seems to be a common problem, so sorry for starting a new thread for my case, but nothing I've tried has worked.

I've recently purchased The Walking Dead through Steam, but I can't get it to even launch. Whenever I attempt to play it, it appears as if nothing happens; Steam says I'm playing for about 5-10 seconds, but the game never launches. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit. Here's what I've tried:

    - Run as Administrator
    - Run in Compatibility mode
    - Disabled internet connection
    - Run with a clean boot (disabled all third party services except for Steam)
    - Unplugged all USB Devices (except for mouse and keyboard)
    - Added dinput8.dll
    - Manually run DXSETUP

Here's the error from Windows Event Viewer:

Faulting application name: WalkingDead101.exe, version: 2012.4.23.11289, time stamp:

Have you restarted the system since installing the game?

I have seen the ntdll issue 2 times recently, here and here, and a while ago here. I don't know a fix though.

One user had success with running in compatibility mode for win95 or win98/me specifically.

I do notice that these values are the same, so it always crashes at the same point.

I do have the same ntdll version and don't get the crash, so that's at least something.

  • I bought TWD during the Steam Sales, I am using Windows8 which I now have learned may have compatibility issues, the game does not launch, I open task manager to see that the game does become a process but closes after a second or two, I have read about people with similar issues, I tried in all compatibility modes, ran as Admin, unplugged Xbox Remote. Any suggestions on what to try, I would not mind it if I could get my money back and buy another game or purchase it again in the future. I heard about the game through the numerous reviews which held it very highly and wanted to play it.

Have you restarted your computer yet?

Also, please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

  • I bought the walking dead on the steam sales and after it finished downloading it just wouldn't launch I have verified the game cache and uninstalled and re-installed it (twice) but it still won't work. It starts to load and then just stops like it's closing itself. any suggestions?

  • Hello,

I've recently downloaded the Walking Dead game for my computer through Steam and it does not start up. It will go from the launching notice, my little avatar will light green indicating that I'm playing it for about ten seconds, and then go blue indicating that I'm not playing the game anymore. I've attempted to do all of the troubleshooting I've been able to find, and yet nothing is working. Please help me fix this. If you need me to provide any other specifications, I will be happy to do so. I attempted contacting Steam, but they directed me to information I already attempted utilizing, so I'm kind of stuck.

    Thanks for your time.

I just merged several threads with the same issue into this one, to keep the information in one place.
Here's some requests to those who haven't done so yet:

Try unplugging all non-essential USB devices, especially joysticks or gamepads.

    Support FAQ
Please try the steps outlined in the support FAQ.

    Event Viewer
    Try starting the game.

Then follow these instructions on how to start the Event viewer.

  • Well, I've figured out how to get my Steam copy to run. Basically, I can start the game by running "WalkingDead101.exe" in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\" folder

However, this isn't a permanent solution. I've noticed that the game does NOT save.

  • I also bought my copy of TWD on the winter Steam sale and just tried to launch it for the first time right now. First time it said the game stopped working so I restarted my PC and tried again. Then I tried the Verify Game which said there were no problems. I also tried the regedit permissions that I found on Steams support page. Then I tried running the Direct X installer which completed successfully. But the game still will not run. When I click on the icon or the Walking Dead 101 in the app folder it launches steam but goes no further after the dialog box disappears.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Here is my dxdiag:

@Alchemyrose707 said: I also bought my copy of TWD on the winter Steam sale and just tried to launch it for the first time right now.

Please try unplugging all Non-Essential USB devices.
Since it at least tried to start the first time, you might also benefit from deleting the savegame folder ( %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Telltale Games\The Walking Dead ).
