W&G Episode 1 not starting.

After clicking "launch the game" nothing happens. Windows Task Manager reports the process as running for a while, terminates after like 3 minutes of idling. The demo works fine tho.

  • Hey, could you try running the game with a clean boot?

    To Boot Clean in Windows XP

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
    4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
    5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    6. Click on the Services tab
    7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
    8. Uncheck all boxes in the window or click the button labeled Disable All
    6. Click OK
    7. Click Restart
    8. After reboot, run game to see if it works.

    After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click OK
    4. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

    This isn't really a long term solution, but it will help us identify the problem.

    I could not exactly follow your instructions to the letter due using vista, however that did it. Works fine with the clean boot.

  • Good to hear. What that basically means is that one of your other programs is likely preventing you from playing the game normally. The best thing you can do is to turn off as many programs as possible before you start playing. The most likely culprits are anything that have video, any sort of cd burning software, or any sort of debugging tools (unlikely but possible).

  • I'm having the same problem, immediately after downloading and installing it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, upgrading my nvidia drivers, and rebooting in diagnostic mode. None of these work.

    In my eyes its completely unacceptable for a program to fail silently and offer no information whatsoever to the user about the problem.

  • Do you have any sort of CD cloning programs or debugging tools running?

  • I had daemon tools running at first but I disabled all the virtual drives and closed it and restarted and that didn't help any. It of course wouldn't have started when I rebooted in diagnostic mode anyway.
