Monkey Island or Bust!

Is anyone else disappointed that in TMI, we never actually WENT to Monkey Island? Other than that, it's one of my favorite games in the series.

(And yes, I know in "LeChuck's Revenge", we didn't technically go to MI, but Dinky Island was connected to MI by the tunnels, so it's pretty close.)

  • That place got a little old if you ask me. I wouldn't like Guybrush to go there just for the sake of going there. Instead, they worked on much different, interesting places and this really got me.

I know even the name is Monkey Island and all but...

  • I do find it a little off that the name is "Tales of MONKEY ISLAND" but MI is not involved except through random jokes/refferences...

But Other than that it doesnt really matter... and it does keep continuity...

  • As the games went on, Monkey Island got more and more, well, deserted. Thanks to Escape, The Monkey head is gone, The Monkeys left, the Island got a lot smaller and Hermen no longer exists. Thanks to Curse, the Cannibals are gone, although the Island was still huge.

There is nothing left on the Island that made it interesting in the first game, all the identity it had is now gone, faded memories of the past leaving just a huge Island of nothing. The Underworld of Hell and the Catacombs have vanished and were written out in Escape, no, there is no point in going there. LeChuck only sent Guybrush there so he couldn't escape, but Guybrush has got off the Island multiple times.

  • I was extremely disappointed in the fact that Monkey Island wasnt involved in the game at all. I think Monkey Island should definitely be a part of every installment to the series!

Why do you think Monkey Island is empty nowadays? All kinds of stuff could have appeared in there. For example, did SMI have lava rollercoasters or Church of LeChuck? Answer is no, they did not.
And since people say a lot of time has passed since EFMI and as the beginning of the Screaming Narwhal shows there have been some great adventures in between, it would be very, very unlikely that Monkey Island would be "empty".
Who knows what LeChuck could have done or created in Monkey Island (maybe its full of Killer Walruses). And it would be easy to come up with a reason for Guybrush to go to Monkey Island, even if it turned out to be empty (which I seriously doubt).

  • Just because the series is named after Monkey Island doesn't mean it has to be a main point of each game. If it was called "The adventures of Guybrush" then we would all have forgotten about Monkey Island and nobody would care if it was in the game. The content of the game shouldn't be dictated by the title.

  • Surprisingly not. I applaud it as one of Telltale's many bold moves concerning the series. The last thing a 20-year old franchise needs is stale retreads. For me, ToMI was exactly what the doctor ordered: true to the spirit and creatively risky.

  • Whilst a trip to Monkey Island would have been nice, the amount of new stuff they would have to add would mean they would be just as well creating a whole new Island.

  • How about a follow-up question:

Assuming there are future installments in the series, would you like to see a return to MI (maybe Return to Monkey Island?!)? From past experience, it's obviously a nexus of voodoo and ancient monkey rituals. I half-expected one of the fissures in the crossroads to lead there.

  • It would have to take some very creative writing to get out the hole that Escape created, I'd love to go back to Monkey Island but only if it still had the Monkey Head and the Underground Catacombs. Without at least them, it doesn't feel like Monkey Island, then again, I suppose a quick write off:

"What!? The Giant Monkey Head, but I though.."
    "It's returned!"
    "but ho.."
"Voodoo spirits Guybrush, they work in Mysterious Ways"
    "But..."
"I sense the Catacombs have also returned as they only appear once every Ten Years"
    "..Oh that's very Flying Dutchman!"
"GO GUYBRUSH, WE MUST RETURN TO MONKEY ISLAND BEFORE THE MUSHROOMS OF HELLS REVIVE LeCHUCK!"

I said part, not main point.

Certainly the game should not be dictated by the title. I agree.

True. But it isnt. It is called Tales of Monkey Island and thus Monkey Island plays a significant role in the series.
