Which supporting character(s) would you like to come back after Tales?

Spoiler Alert

Guybrush has had many supporting characters throughout the MI series. Of course Elaine, LeChuck, Stan and the Voodoo Lady always appear in every MI game so they're a given.

Which supporting characters would you like to see in the next MI game(s) (after ToMI,) and why?

You don't have to say Largo LeGrande or Murray because everyone knows they're both awesome. Nor do you have to say Morgan because the cliffhanger at the end of Ch5 involves her anyway.

Just maybe talk about which supporting characters were your favorite, and what you might see them doing if they came back... hopefully our ideas will be better than what they actually did to Murray and Herman in EMI.

[I know there probably is a similar thread like this on the forums, but because of possible Necromancy issues (replying to dead topics), and since RoTPG was released since then, I decided to open a new topic about it.]

  • I guess extreme things tend to seem creepy. That, or weird/different things.

I really couldn't get slash for years, even though one of my best friends is a big slasher. But she tells me the point isn't that she believes the characters are attracted to each other, the point is that she wants to see how she can take two characters who are the least likely to ever be in a relationship, and write a story that manages to keep them in character AND make it happen.
It's like a game of wits to her.

Still not my thing, but I guess it's a hobby...

I think a lot of the time people aren't in love with the character as much as they are in love with being in love. Like, they're high on it. So they just cause it and work themselves up. Just like you can be drunk without drinking if you convince yourself.
And part of it is just for fun. I think a lot of the time, seeing everyone go "uh, creepy..." is the whole point. Hence the disturbing threads and stuff like that.

Anyway, what I meant is, you're perfectly entitled to find it creepy, plus sometimes it's the point.

Still, I don't think anyone here is a total fanboy/fangirl of Morgan's in the way we're talking about. On this thread at least, it seemed more of a... er... platonic character-fan type of love :P

Right, yeah, I was mixed up. That's the one I was thinking of.

    Well, I hope so.

BTW I had to google that slash/slasher thing, because at first I thought that your friend was either a fan of former Guns'N'Roses guitarist or slasher movies. So I was bit confused about what you were talking about. :)

  • Oh, sorry. For anyone, slash and slashing is pairing two characters, usually two straights males who hate each other. It's a bit like shipping, but usually more sexual and more unrealistic.
It's called that because you put a slash between the two characters. For instance, in Monkey Island, the obvious one would be Guybrush/LeChuck.

  • Aaanyway...

@Jen Kollic said: Off-topic, but am I the only person who thought Carla was hot? I wasn't that fussed about Kate.

Yes, Carla is hot, and I did think of including her when saying Morgan is one of the hottest MI women. I do personally think that SMI's Elaine is hotter than SMI's Carla though.

I think what got me is EMI. I thought of EMI's Carla, and *yeuuhh*... tbh EMI really shouldn't even be considered when comparing character hotness.

So yes, I'd say that Morgan, Elaine, Kate and Carla could each be considered for the hottest woman of MI.

"Personally I dont care about backstories that much. I havent heard people complain about the backstories of Fester Shinetop or Governor Phatt or Griswald Goodsoup or some friggin` Miss Rivers!!?"

"However, Elaine has to be redesigned for the next MI game and the voice actress has to change. They have taken her totally to the wrong direction. In SoMI Elaine was mature, calm and friendly. Now shes just annoying and impatient as hell and looks like a young and spoiled brat. Her voice in Tales is also a horrible mixture of nagging and screeching. The best voice acting of Elaine might have been In CMI but in EMI she sounded also calm and gentile, and took care of her business without making a fuss out of everything, (unlike in Tales) which goes well with the image that SoMI gives of her."

Okay, the culmination is already known - LeChuck fights Guybrush, Guybrush kills LeChuck, Game ends. But those latter backstories you mentioned are the foundation for that ending.

Essentially had all the secondary characters died from the "Pox" then really that wouldn't have made much of a storyline. Guybrush would have no one to champion, and LeChuck would have lost his charm as the sinister yet loveable villain. So backstories I think are the crux of the game, without these facets the storyline would be repetetive dribble giving no integrity to the overall story.

Personally I love them, though some I'd rather forget.
As for "Goodsoup" and "Miss Rivers", they were fantastic characters.
And essential to the story I might add!
Goodsoup = way into family crypt
Miss Rivers = way to get dunce hat/win diving comp!
As for the others you mentioned I really didn't care that much.
AND MURRAY! Are you on drugs? He's an integral part of the game now, we love to know the bizarre ways he keeps popping out of nowhere (Plunder Beach, Blood crypt, Planet Threepwood, Manatee! Where will the tides of evil take him next? Or those darn voodoo kids that found him on the shore?

Furthermore I totally agree with the Elaine redesign. She was certainly irritating, her persona in CMI (whilst limited) was wonderful, she was sexy, energetic, not afraid to ACTUALLY get angry at the protagonist, and her performance overall - excuse the pun - was GOLD!

Then there was her EfMI personage.
Again, all of the above, and I did enjoy the American accent. And for the sake of semantics it really didn't bother me that much.
    The character basically had balls.

    But Tales, beg my pardon...
    She was a total harlot.
She had this weird nasal cockney going on and from the outset I loathed the character.
Even her design was flawed majorly, she seemed like a swashbuckling brat on meth.
Her attitude was skewed and randomly placed as if she was suffering menopause due to the long hiatus between EfMI and Tales.

Especially when she got angry at Guybrush, making him ask the same questions over and over, like 'what must he do' when you're on the ship in the beginning scene. And she just repeats the darn answer over and over just like a script. There was no irritation at the fact Guybrush was lame, she just camly repeated everything despite the pertinence of the situation which really didn't give the scene that authenticity it needed.

Not like the emphatic "Guybrush!!!" she used to give in CMI anyway.

Furthemore she was off swooning with LeChuck, more concerned with monkeys and apparent animal rights instead of Guybrush.

And don't get me started on her detail!
Flawed! She was unchanging, not stoic but rather girly and naiive (not a great Governor). And the hair - there was just too much subtle competition between her and Guybrush over who can use the most hair mousse/product.

I'd like to see character development in future TALES, not the same clothes, same hair for particular characters!

On the main topic, that being secondary characters returning?

This, but also the same with Jambalaya. I wouldn't mind seeing the aftermath of the pirates taking it back after Ozzie's downfall, especially since we never had the opportunity to see it in its naturally piratey state. Maybe we could see Casaba either imprisoned or converted to piracy (though he'd have to be terrible at it, of course)?

I recommended this in another thread for future Tales and I totally agree.
I want to see post-Ozzie Caribbean.
I want to know whether those secondary characters and islands introduced/converted ever returned to their roots in piracy.
Will we get to revisit Jambalaya? Has it upheld its pirate free status, despite the blatant hypocrisy of 'LaFeet' and the locals esteem for him.
Will grogacino's match grog, or even the youth-raging Grog XD?
Is Casaba still continuing the curfew against pirates despite not knowing the rest of the Caribbean has returned to piracy?

And if you have read this far I congratulate you, but I don't have a dunce hat to award you with... sorry.
And to those who don't know the analogy, this is looking @Mermaid!!!

The very idea you put about new gamers and egalitarianism in gaming
is just not on. I was born 1990, only met with Monkey Island when Santa (I love you) gave me CMI for Christmas. And only in the past 2 years have I actually gone to eBay and bought SOMI and LR!
They are awesome and I'm not changing the future of gaming experience nor the analogous nature of the series, which was first introduced in SOMI, just so some 2000's born kiddy can comprehend the in-jokes.

I have nothing wrong with change, and I've been waiting for change for the past ten years. Winslow and Morgan were great, so were other notables, but in relation to the topic I agree with change in the series.

Though not without a touch of the old too. I'd certainly like to return to Monkey Island including other well known locales, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice old places and names because the gamers of tomorrow don't understand why we are going to Monkey Island, or even why it is part of the title.

Wouldn't that be incest. After all Chucky and Guybrush are brothers. :p

I liked Elaine the Pirate Princess of Tales a lot more, than I liked Elaine the Politician* of Escape. I say, more plunder, less bunny.

*While I follow politics actively in RL, I feel that politics in fiction are often boring and unfunny.

Will we get to revisit Jambalaya?

I hope that we won't see Jambalaya again, because it is my least favourite island of the entire Monkey Island -series.

  • You know what I think would be cool? Bringing back the Monkey Island Cannibals in a different story arc, for example, as TV show hosts or something. They would force Guybrush to do a Jackass competition to win something from them.

Other than that, I'd like to see Kate Capsize return, and while there, actually the whole Booty Island ambiance in an episode. It doesn't mean it would have to be set on Booty (though a 3D Booty would definitely be a plus), but a similar island where "party" is the form of government. And that could also serve to bring back Moose (maybe along with Bugeye, though personally I'd see Bugeye more in Largo's crew, and I think they can go separate ways) the party dude. And make Guybrush screw up his fun again =)

I get the joke, and it is funny. But there is no evidence of that, really. Guybrush did use the skull of one of the skeletons in the corridors under Dinky/Monkey Island to make a LeChuck voodoo doll, but that only proves it to be from LeChuck's ancestor, not Guybrush's. He could be mistaken, and after all, how can someone recognize their own parents just by looking at their bare skeletons?
