Does Post Count Matter?

This is branching off from another thread that went WAY off topic. Does having a high post count matter to you?

  • I've all of a sudden become in favor of the post count being removed. Because, lately, I've been noticing quite a large amount of stupid, pointless posting that often contributes nothing to the overall discussion. And I'm sure the main intention behind this is purely so that people can increase their post counts easily, and quite frankly, this sort of posting is really starting to annoy me. So, if the post count were to be eliminated, it would probably put a stop to a lot of this stupid posting that I've been seeing, which would be a good thing.

  • Absolutely. So annoying to see people go around bumping months-old threads for no good reason.

Sorry, but I thought that the thread was still quite relevant now. It's not as though I'm bumping it just to say, "hey guys, remember these good old times?". I'm bumping the thread because I have something to say on the topic.

Plus, bumping threads isn't the type of annoying posting that I was referring to.

  • You mean like pepsiboy's "This copyrighted character should be in poker night" threads then?

  • Sort of, but what I'm mostly referring to is just completely pointless posts. For example, I absolutely hate reading posts like 'yay!', or 'definitely'. Sometimes I just think, 'well, is there anything more that you can say? Can you make your posts perhaps a little more expansive?'. One-word posts just annoy me sometimes - posts with no depth to them; no meat; no substance. They contribute nothing.

And also, in some of the hint threads, I have literally read replies that amount to the equivalent of saying 'sorry, I don't know', if not those exact words. And I just feel that this sort of posting is encouraged because of the post count. I can't see why else people would post such pointless things.

By the way, I'm probably coming off as more grumpy than intended. I'm not all that worked up about this. It's just this little niggly annoyance that I've been noticing more and more lately.

  • I think people who post stupid posts would do it anyways. If they do want a high post count, they're probably craving attention, and if they want attention, they'll keep posting.
This being said, I'd have no problem with post count being removed. I just don't really think it would change anything.

It would be nice if you could "like" posts, and then have a coefficient, and then it would also say how many of people's posts were actually interesting to the rest of the community :p

  • I Used to go to multiple forums that had that sort of thing. One was just a Thanks button and the other one had a reputation. Which lead to reputation boosting threads, unfortunately.

But still, that's actually a good thing.

Yeah, that is a good point. But I do feel that the post count does add that little extra incentive. Some people crave status, and they think that they can achieve a higher status by having a higher post count. Of cousre, this is sort of speculation - I don't really know what's going on inside other user's heads, but I'm pretty sure that this is the case with some.

Probably not. And I guess, occasionally, the post count can reflect a quality member of the online community. There are some people here with large post counts who I really respect and I quite enjoy reading what they have to say. Then there are, of course, others who are similar to the sorts of people that I've already been bitching about in this thread.

Agreed. I often want to 'like' other people's posts. On occasion, I actually have done, with this little image that I decided to upload to Imageshack (being the strange person that I am :)): youtubethumbup.png.

Yeah, I know. I was mostly kidding there. :)

I thought you might have been, but I wasn't sure. It's hard to tell from text alone whether someone is being serious or not. Either way, I didn't take it too seriously, but I thought that I should've justified myself anyway, just in case you were serious. It was pretty funny, though - there is some irony in what I did :).
