  • So, something that I also noticed.
Episodes 2-5 do not have the same Direct3D failure,
but all of them crash -- HARD!!!

Picture of the error is below.

Set your display color depth to 32 bit and it should work.

That worked, thank you so very much! I did not know that was set that way. I was at my wits end when i was trying to play the game. Thanks for putting my sanity back in track!

  • Just downloaded the Adventure Bundle, and am getting the classic "The program can't start because d3dx9_41.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." error. I have a Shuttle SG31 running an Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS accelerator card, and have DirectX 11 installed on Windows 7 64-bit. dxdiag reports both 32 and 64-bit versions of DirectX 11 are working fine.

Guys, it's 2010. Should we not be past this by now?

Did you run the DirectX Updater lately?
The game is not asking for DirectX 11, but for a DirectX 9 component. Sadly Windows 7 doesn't ship with all previous DirectX versions up to date.

Thanks for the tip, but oy. We. should. be. past. this. by. now.

The PC platform is decades old. Things should just WORK.

    Again, thanks.

I'm now downloading the games in the bundle. Thanks again, particularly for posting the link right to the updater!

So this is directed a little bit less at Telltale and a whole lot more at Microsoft (okay, so maybe they don't browse these forums, but still): Make DirectX work more smoothly, dagnabbit! It's not an standard if it never works the same way twice! Users shouldn't have to kludge here, download there, and install this, that, and the other to "try to make things work." THEY SHOULD JUST WORK already! People buy consoles for just that reason: as a rule, things JUST WORK.

Perching to the choir. (Note: That link is of my own personal meandering thoughts and do not reflect the views of Telltale.)

  • hey there

I was also getting this "Could not initialize Direct3D" error message whilst running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit with the most recent AMD drivers. After doing some more experimenting, ending all programs that might have caused errors and such I found out an attached USB-Monitor with its current DisplayLink-drivers caused this error.

The error occured with "The Penal Zone" for the first time - not with any of the episodes before. Guess there's something wrong with the graphic engine. Maybe it doesn't like multi-monitor-solutions.

This should be taken in regard though

  • Hey, evre time i try to play Monkey island and Strong Bad i get a "Cant initialize Direct3D". pleas help
