Why do some forums take their selves so seriously

posted by doodo! on - last edited - Viewed by 137 users

I got banned from a forum like 10 years ago. I made a new account, forgetting if it were the same forum, even...and I was banned again for a second account. :p

I wasn't even being bothersome this time around.

Forums are just a place to socialize, make friends, pass the time. I don't see why some people see it like it's a work place or something, or like it's a art museum, or a fancy place to eat dinner...or a Vegas Casino or something...

I understand a bann is a bann, but it was like 10 years ago, the site code didn't even remember me. :p Was it that big of a deal? I enjoy talking to people on occasion about Final Fantasy or this/ that...I wasn't causing trouble.

  • I honestly do not post on many boards... and if they were all about locking up threads for no real reason I would not be posting there very long... I personally like when threads go a little off topic.. that is how conversations are.

  • I think a little bit offtopic is fine, but it could be annoying if people are trying to have a serious discussion about something. Which is why a good mod moves posts into seperate threads rather than deletes them for that purpose. Could anyone imagine how much darker the world would have been if "Boobs: An artistic discussion" had not been allowed to take place? :p

  • I quit the Minecraft forums because the moderators all began acting like idiots. The userbase just soldiified my decision to leave.

Fun fact, I didn't even get a single warning or a bad word of the modders while I was there. I just left due to the douchebaggery. Idiots.

    Yeah same here.
    Funny thing on Monkey Island.
I always heard about people here saying "take on Monkey Island" and really didnt care what telltale did since this was the first Ive heard of it, and then E3 hit and I went to telltale, and immediatly saw Monkey Island on the top of the page, and just knew that there would be a jump in members if it did be as popular as they did.

/edit: Just as I was writing about the join dates, I checked the join dates of the posters in this thread and noticed something very interesting. Man, you can smell where the fans come from. :D

Haha, I look at my join date and am both shocked and a bit disturbed.

  • I'm pure Monkey Island hop-along. But I owned a retail copy of S&M Season one for a long time, so do one.

Also i've never had a post deleted ever. It's evident that the mods are all fear me

  • Irishmile is back! Yes! This place wouldn't be the same without him.

  • I've had a thread deleted while I was in the middle of posting to it for the first time, once. Talk about being preemptive!

A lot depends on the forum. If all you do is post "I agree", that's pretty much frowned on everywhere. Some places are supposed to be more serious, participants have more limited time available, and you really shouldn't post there unless you have something really significant to contribute. Fortunately, this is not one of those places.

Personally, I think double-posting should be OK, and post counts removed, so no one accuses people of double-posting just to boost post counts. Single-subject posts are a lot easier to handle. They can even be more easily removed by power-mad moderators. :)
