Hi, everyone, strangest garage sale you've been to?

I went to one today, and the guy had old cut outs from magazines of nude women in boxes upon boxes, and then he had a huge comical collection of adult comic books , which included nude women doing sexual things in a adult rated manner. And then he had personal drawings that he did of ...you get the idea.

I was surprised that a garage sale would have these things. I used to garage sale with my mother when I was much younger. I don't know how many of you did yourselves, or if you often garage sale anymore. But, this was my experience today.

  • I remember a garage sale with no signs, and I didn't even know it was a garage sale from afar. All the stuff was still IN the garage, which someone stupidly forgot to open. And there was no other customers in the garage, or any price tags, probably too lazy to do it. Anyway, the guy selling saw me and started hitting me. What's up with that? Then a bunch of people in uniforms took me to their car and locked me in a cage.

    That was a weird month.

You're sure that was a garage sale?

It had to be. There's the garage and everything.

Are you serious? There were no price tags!?

  • I knew a couple down the street from me growing up; they held a garage sale every other Sunday. The weird thing about their merchandise there was they pulled all of it from the dump, and garbage heaps. I never bought anything from them because I thought it was sort of on the icky side of things. It was fun though to watch unsuspecting buyers pay for other people’s garbage. I wondered if anyone ever knew where any of it had come from. Guess that's one way to make a quick buck though. Either way I didn't care for any of it. I only popped by occasionally to say hello to their son, and daughter who were about my age.

I actually think it's good to get some use out of other people's junk. Isn't that the whole idea of op shops / thrift stores and organisations that take charitable donations of items like clothing (e.g. St Vincent de Paul)? People throw out a lot of stuff that is still usable and might be of value to someone else.

In Australia there are regular council collection days, where people leave items they want to ditch out on the curb and the council will come collect them as garbage - lounges, TVs, chairs, all sorts. Often stuff is in good working order and they're just chucking it out because they got something newer/better, like tossing a CRT TV because they got a new plasma (hurrah for consumerist societies). None too few people cruise around just before collection day scouting for stuff they can use (or sell maybe, I guess). Most people are happy for someone else to get some value out of things they no longer need.

  • I don't see any problem getting use from someone's old junk. I actually frequent thrift stores in the summer for clothes, and used books. The problem with their merchandise (for me anyway) was that they were taking it from the city dump, and from old garbage bags, with other perisable refuse. There's rotten food, bacteria, and who knows what in there. I'd trust something that was on a curb moreso than a filthy rotten dump. It'd be nice if there were a collection program like that where I live. I'm sure it would help a lot of people get more use out of older items. It's sad how wasteful the world can be sometimes, but I'd still be apprehensive about accepting something that was in a city dump. I guess it differs for other people, but if someone else is alright with the idea I'd say go for it.

  • Curb side pick up is pretty good. My dad collects the bases off office chairs to fix ours when the wheels break. Once we found this Disney Princess little plastic vanity table with a mirror, nothing wrong with it. The girl just out grew it. Gave it a good scrub and my niece loves to read her books at it. Bargain!

  • I used to garbage pick when I was younger, a lot , very often. But some of the stuff was pretty nasty and I know that when I throw some stuff out that I wouldn't want others using it or touching it.

I've gotten all kinds of things from the trash in my day. I used to garbage pick as a pass time, for fun .
