Foreshadowing in MI2?

Ok, so I've actually had this on my mind for a long time, but this is the first time I've actually written about it. When LeChuck appears during Guybrush's dream on Booty Island in MI2, he is wearing a blue jacket instead of the red one he wears at every other point in the game. I think that he is wearing a blue jacket, much like Guybrush is, to indicate that Guybrush and LeChuck have more in common than Guybrush knows, ie they have the same blood (brothers.) Does anyone think that LeChuck's blue jacket in the dream sequence is meant to foreshadow the revelation that the two are brothers, or is there another reason, such as a possible flaw in the original technology?

  • I thought it just was so he wouldn't blend in with the red background.

  • I thought it was LeChuck's Magical Mind Rape Coat(TM).

  • It is just so that he doesn't disappear into the background. But, by all means, read some symbolism into it if you really want to. xD

Yup, trying to implement any kind of color symbolism is probably least on the designer's mind when he has to create an attractive, atmospheric and readable color composition in a rather limited color environment. ;)

Good point. Also, the fact that LeChuck turns into SMI Guybrush during that sequence might also represent that.

Haha! xD I actually DID write an essay on LeChuck's design (which included the colour of his coat) throughout the series earlier this year, and I found it both annoying and notable that he had a blue coat in that scene. He also had the blue coat in SMI, so I was able to write it off as it being how Guybrush imagines he'd look as a zombie. xD That's probably why they chose to recolour it blue against the red background, instead of, say, green or yellow.

Blue is the complete opposite of red if I remember correctly from my Arts class in school - this will ensure that he'll stand out.

I think they changed the color of LeChuck's coat in the Monkey 1 special edition from blue to red, so if you only played those versions that scene might not make as much sense. I always thought of LeChuck in the Booty Island dream sequence as the way Guybrush imagined him based on his previous encounter with him in the first game, as he hasn't run into Zombie Lechuck yet at that point.

On the colour wheel, green is the complete opposite of red. As LeChuck's skin was green already, and yellow would just look silly, they decided to take the hint from SMI and use blue.

Well, that's my theory, anyway. xD [/also took a drawing/art class earlier this year]

But you are aware that different color classification schemes ("color wheels") exist, and especially that the "primary/secondary" and "complementary color" idea is a very tainted one?
