Tell Herschel the Truth

posted by raspy_zo on - last edited - Viewed by 3K users

Hello all. I tried telling Herschel the truth multiple times but it always comes out a lie. Anyone have specifics on how to answer to him? Sorry in advance if this has been covered, I didn't see anything posted.

  • Of course it does matter, it's in the end stats and the game will not forget.
I am sure that it has been answered before but it could be hard to find it.

@raspy_zo: Are you sure that the game registered it as a lie. I cannot remember the exact wordings, but Hershel will always lecture Lee, no matter if he lied or not.

  • hershal does change some comments if you go 'ass hole' or 100 % nice guy but it's not many.

  • I found even with the full truth throughout, Hershel would still register a lie if while in the barn conversation you say the "I was looking in her house for help" line. Got him to consider it the truth by saying "She saved me" instead. Might work for you?

Hershel makes a very good points about this, even if your not lying to the character. Keep your facts strait and 'we' or 'us', what had happened, how exactly it happened. Or just makes sure it is something believable, after all being to trusting could lead to unforeseen events. Lying could actually be in your favor, for any character that might know to much about Lee.

  • I think what you tell Shawn when you first meet him also affects whether or not you've "lied" to Herschel. I remember playing through and telling Herschel the truth in the barn, but he still reacted as if I had lied to him. This was the playthrough where I lied to Shawn about my relation to Clem. On my second playthrough I told Shawn the truth, then repeated my choices in the conversation with Herschel and this time it worked.

  • well when you think about itlee and clem don't look much alike so hershal being the smart he is could easily tell something was up..

  • I see that conversation as having three outcomes but two very similar:
-You flat out lie, Hershel rips on you for that.

-You tell the truth, but it isn't that bright of a truth, so Hershel gives you advice to become a better liar for your own safety. (Same or similar dialogue as the first case) You're a convicted killer and whether he knows it or not, it is good advice to "become a better liar".

-You tell a half-truth and Hershel doesn't talk to you about lying.

  • I've tested this out a couple of times now and from what I've found is that he will pick up on the truth or lie at the start of the conversation at the barn depending on what details you give him when first meeting him.

At the last part of the barn conversation, Picking the "what is it" line will lead to calling you a liar regardless of how truthful you've been. If you picked "Sure" he won't call you a liar and treats it as friendly advice this also applies if you lied to him when first meeting him. (will test out the other last options at the barn)

    Hopefully that clears things up.

  • You can lie to Herschel the whole time, but the in the barn if you choose I was being attacked and she came to my rescue, the end game stats will show that you were being truthful to him.

And if were were being honest the whole time with him but choose I was looking in her house for help, which isn't even a lie really, the end game stats will show you weren't being truthful.

There a similar issue with siding with with Kenny. you can be completely siding with Kenny but if you choose "reason with him" the stats will show you sided with Larry.
