Living Another Childhood Through Cartoons

Growing up, I didn't get to watch a lot of cartoons. My parents restricted me to Batman: The Animated Series, The Rescuers, Courage, Wild Thornberries, Hey Arnold, Spongebob, and An American Tail typically. Pokemon was never allowed. As I got into my teens I was allowed to watch pretty much anything, but mostly only got to see stuff like Funky Phantom, Scooby Doo, Totally Spies, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Sherman and Peabody, Teen Titans, and The Mummy. I missed out on a lot of great 90s shows. So, having grown up and found out about a lot of shows I missed, I've gone back and began to relive some of these shows, such as-

Popeye
Tom and Jerry
Merrie Melodies
Betty Boop and Bimbo
Superman
Darkwing Duck
Ducktales
Thundercats
Snagglepuss
The Jetsons
The Flintstones
Pink Panther
Powerpuff Girls
Dragonball
Rugrats
Dexter's Lab
Ed, Edd, and Eddy
Cow and Chicken

Does anyone here do this? Find out about great cartoons later and then come back to them and begin watching them once you've grown up.

  • I find it odd that "Animaniacs" and "Pinky and The Brain" are referenced nowhere in this thread.

Probably because they go without saying. On a similar note, Freakazoid.

  • Ed, Edd, n Eddy was just amazing. Danny Antonucci ended the series in a brilliant way.

Yeah Big Picture Show was great & worth the wait. We finally got to see Eddy's brother and the reason Eddy is the way he is.

  • I rewatch some old shows when I see them come on again (most have been listed in this thread already lol). I kinda miss the late night showings of Popeye, O'Canada, Rocky and Bullwinkle, etc. on Cartoon Network.

I like when you rewatch a show when you're older, you see things you missed when you were younger or a joke you didn't understand cause you didn't know the pop culture reference (Animaniacs did that to me a lot).

  • Looney Tunes is what I grew up watching.

  • Paradoxically, I find cartoons easier to get into than movies nowadays being older. My suspension of disbelief works better than watching actors, especially if we're talking some bad acting. :p

I like all Disney/Pixar, of course, but somehow even now I find classics like Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood... more "mature" than Tangled for example. Also, I love DreamWorks stuff, like The Road to El Dorado and Sinbad.

I adore Looney Tunes - I was lucky to have a wonderful domestic synchronization that I've grown up with. Anything Bugs Bunny does for me. :D

I've enjoyed some more "experimental" movies as well, like The Secret of Kells or the silent The Illusionist. Planning to see The Iron Giant.

    Also, anyone remember this? :)

  • While I like that ThunderCats was mentioned in this thread, I'm somewhat saddened by the mere mention since the reboot, which was FANTASTIC, has pretty much been given the axe by Cartoon Network.

It's no secret I love animation. :D I still watch a lot of classic television animation (DuckTales still holds up remarkably well, as does Gargoyles and the whole of the DCAU (Batman: The Animated Series up to Justice League Unlimited).

I also like modern animated television shows like Kim Possible, Phineas and Ferb, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra.

  • Being a very sheltered child, I can say that this is almost impossible for me! XD

I've watched alot, A LOT of cartoons in my time both old and new, (I stayed up late to watch the 80s stuff as well like Ulysees 31, Mask, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, He-Man ect.).

Loved Transformers (and Beast Wars, quite underrated that one but it is definately worth watching).

I think the only cartoons I didn't watch so much were the old Disney cartoons, Thundercats and GI Joe.

I can watch some Thundercats if I want to though. My little brother has some of the DVDs (first season I believe).
Hmmm... Maybe I will after I catch up on Ulysses 31! XD

(Now Ulysses 31 is an awesome show. Infact anyone watched the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon? Man, that was pretty cool and bleak at the same time as well. :D)

EDIT: Ah you guys are missing some other cool ones!

    Biker Mice from Mars
Street Sharks (If you watched this then you will know why I'm laughing XD)
    The Real Ghost Busters
The 90s Marvel cartoons! (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, Spider-man, Silver Surfer, and The Fantastic Four)
Rocco's Modern Life (Almost as good as Ren and Stimpy (one of my favourites for sure! XD))

Oh, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtes (Hero over here in the UK! XD)

EDIT 2: ONE MORE THING! I loved Jackie Chan Adventures too! XD

EDIT 3: Heh. The Mask cartoon. I remember that one, and Ace Ventura too! XD
