For those who chose Doug over Carley. Explain why.

Well, it seems we are a small % of people who actually decided to help Doug instead of Carley. I mainly decided not to save her because she seemed to be the only one who knew about Lee being a murderer so I considered her a threat, I know many people decided to save her because she was "hot", but come on guys, she confessed she was in love with doug.

It seems I may have missed a nice character but Doug ended up being a really cool guy.

"Wait. I know you know everything about this flashlight, I mean if you know anything about how it got broken"

I am sure a similar thread has been created before, but come on, what else are we supposed to talk about while we wait? :D

Did Carley being a pretty woman had something to do with my choice at a subconscious level? Probably, I don't know. My first instinct was to save whoever saved me. This was the same reason I tried to save Shawn over Duck at Hershel's farm because him giving me a ride saved Clem and my life.

Like others pointed out, she had a lot more screen time, and all that screen time was mostly about her helping me. It's hard to dismiss that.

Personally, I was not impressed with Doug at all. Carley haters like to criticize her for the battery thing while ignoring the good things she did. Seriously, who here hasn't done something that's stupid and minor? They also ignore that Doug doesn't act very smart either. I mean he suggests going outside and taking a look hoping a flimsy store gate will be enough to hold back walkers. The only reason the pack of walkers didn't see you in plain sight was because TTG writers willed it so and made chilling out side the drugstore necessary to forward the story. Logically, it didn't make sense and was a pretty stupid and dangerous move. I also don't recall Doug standing up for the newcomers during Larry's tirade.

  • I didn't save Doug in my first playthrough (In my second one I did though) but I saved Carley in my 'canon' playthrough because she seemed like a good person from the argument at the start, and she saved Duck outside. Also when Clementine gets attacked the Walker in the toilet in the Drugstore, you fall over and have to get to her in time. My screen was so dark (The Walking Dead is really dark on my TV) that I couldn't see where to click and I ran out of time, and Carley saved her for me. That made me trust her more, also I said I trusted her when she confronted Lee about his past. Also she showed to be more helpful than Doug as she saved more people and went with Lee to save Glenn. Also I saved Carley because it evened out the male to female ratio in the group, and I like diversity in the group.

Then obviously the whole woman and children first that I mostly tried to keep up (like I helped Duck instead of Shawn, for example). She was also a good shot and seems like the sort of person I would get along with in real life, and I like that she expresses her opinion more unlike Doug. I wanted a romance thing between her and Lee as well, if not, for them to be good friends. Doug was a pretty good character and had some good dialogue in Episode 1 but the Doug or Carley choice was pretty easy to make. Also in my second playthrough I didn't like his role as much and I thought the laser pointer was extremely lame, although I do quite like the alarm system.

Edit: I kind of found the battery thing endearing in a way, and I like how Lee referred to it at the end of Episode 2. It didn't really seem that significant anyway, just to show that Carley isn't as good as technology as Doug is.

It gets another callback in Episode 3 if you ask her about the busted flashlight. She suggests the batteries could be in backwards only for Lee to point out it uses only one. To which she blurts out everything should. :p

That's interesting about her saving Clementine if you don't get up in time. I knew there were a lot of moments where if Lee didn't do anything other characters tend to fill the gap but I didn't know about that one.

Oh yeah I forgot about the flashlight thing with Carley, I never speak to characters, apart from Clementine, about the chalk or flashlight anymore in other playthroughs. I like how Telltale add things like that in.

And when I did it I thought I was screwed as the screen went red but then you hear a gunshot and it cuts to Carley shooting the walker like she does to get it off Lee if you manage to get to Clementine. I quite liked it that way, except at the top of the screen it said "Clementine will remember you didn't save her", made me feel pretty bad lol.

Pretty much my response as well. (and Zac's response too is pretty much my response as well) Her personality was really good. You could trust her. + She saves you and takes risks when helping others. What else is that she's concerned about you and isn't afraid to stand up for those who are being attacked. I picked her on my first and second save files. In real life, i would be glad to have a friend like that.

I find Doug alright, he seems useful as well but his tech skills isn't that useful in a world w/o power anymore. He's also smart like carley.

  • I just finished playing episode 1. 76% of all players chose Carley.

Carley never said she was "in love" with Doug, she said she likes him and I think it's mainly because he saved her life.

Im also sure that majority chose to save her(including me) because she has a gun, not because she's hot. She also saved Lee in the pharmacy.

Yeah, Doug is a really cool guy and it would've been nice to save both of them, but Carley is a good shot and knows how to properly use a gun.

  • I'm sure majority chose cus she has a gun, but looks definitely played a role here. If Doug was a girl then i'd expect some percentage to change. Also the saving part played a role here. Returning the favor. She's also a good shot with good personality.

I agree with Anna san anyway. Carley WAS in love with Lee. Even though she didn't say, I'm sure she felt connected with him which is why she kissed him during their conversation. What else is they got each other's backs. No question they did like/love each other.

(They should've added a scene though with them saying something like:
"Carley, I need to tell you something" then Lee says "I love you or something like that, I got your back. Don't forget that) or hold hands for a long time to increase that impact and feeling of some players and I guess it would make their relationship even closer/etc but i'm pretty sure people already know that they are keeping an eye for each other)

  • Doug is more unique and we need someone to make defence and alarm systems and pretty much everyone starts to have a gun and use one even Clem

Doug was funny and he was easier to trust

Just think about Lilly thought Carley was a traitor whilst Doug was the hero who sacrificed himself to save Ben

To be fair in the first episode I kept on forgetting who was Lilly and who was Carley they were quite similar

  • They aren't similar. Lilly is a crazy girl who got even crazier when her dad died while Carley always keeps her cool unless she is really threatened. Their attitudes are different but they both care for the group. But i wouldn't say that they are similar.

Doug though is pretty cool. Carley sacrificed herself defending Ben (not shield though, but standing up for people who need help) . (I think)
