The ZA and pets [warning]

This topic could get very dark for some regarding our pets during an actual Zombie Apocalypse. I advise some not to read it.

The non dark part:
I wanted to start off with the fact that a huge majority of humanity has some kind of pet. Dog, Cat, hamster, fish. Whatever it may be. Now, I'm not going to focus on the lesser pets such as hamsters or fish or what can be considered the less noise producing pets.

Instead, this is going to focus on the louder pets such as dogs, cats.

From what is known, when it comes down to a ZA one of the survival aspects is to draw as little attention to yourself as possible. Which means you should not make noise as we all know that Zombies will follow a noise for miles out of instinct. (note the horde following the train in ep4)

With that in mind I have no doubt that a lot of the louder pets, mainly dogs and cats would attract a LOT of attention!

Cats:
While cats can run they can't defend themselves. They can try by hissing, or scratching or biting.. But that wouldn't deter a hungry Zombie so the cat just became dinner. In a family atmosphere they can be relatively quiet they still will be a drain on resources over time. Like many animals it doesn't take long for a house cat to become a feral cat when they are pushed into it. Some cats do like to meow or cry now and then so those types are dangerous to have around in the ZA.

Dogs:
These animals are the louder yet more protective of the two. Dogs in a protective mode against a human can overcome most and get away or hurt their attacker enough to deter them. Unfortunately a Zombie does not have the same fight or flight triggers as a normal human being. So while the dog may attack it will be putting itself in danger to being killed and eaten since the dog can't do enough damage to a Zombie to deter it from it's meal. In my opinion, dogs are the first species to be killed off.

So here we are in the Dark part:
You have a dog or a cat that make a lot of noise. It could easily encourage a Zombie horde to you and your family by barking or chasing after them and then running back to the home leading them to your family.

What is done with the pets we love? Do you kill them off in the beginning if they get loud or do you just let them bark and give away your position. Granted a lot of pets can be trained to not bark or make noise but a good portion of them are not so well trained.

I have to admit that I have a very loud dog. She just doesn't listen when she is told to be quiet. A person can walk down the street and she is barking at them. She barks at everything even if there is nothing to bark at. I have to admit here and now and say that my beloved pet would have to be killed in order to protect my family for either to prevent them from attracting Zombies to my home or to provide as an emergency food source for my family.

So there en-lies the question. What do you do with your loud pets? Do you kill them off, do you spare them, do you eat them, what do you do when your family is in danger due to the pet simply giving away your position?

  • Just like most of the people, I would probably let my cat outside, so it can't venture out in the woods. Better that way.

  • I don't think you'd have to kill your pets. Let them loose if you really have to but let's see: cats, as you said, are generally very quiet and can help be a bit of a boost to moral, even if they aren't likely to last very long. And dogs? Well if you can train the dog to keep quiet for most of the time you could have a damn good watcher on your hands. Especially if it's making a shit-ton of noise when people come nearby, it'd alert everyone to any nearby walkers (and anyone else nearby).

  • I'am about to piss alot of you bleeding hearts off with this, but whatever.

In a ZA setting survival is key. Anything that doesn't walk on TWO legs and can talk is FOOD.

My personal plan in the event of a ZA is to seize the local animal shelter. I will care for the animals as best I can, because they have just went from pets to livestock.

Thats right I would keep them alive, even breed them depending on the shelter, but have no doubt I would eat them. You need to keep your strength up, and protein is protein.

That also pretty much answers the question about my pets fate I suppose.

  • Good luck with that, all the barking and meowing would have you surrounded with walkers before the end of the day.

  • I love dogs. But in the event of a zombie apocalypse, they would make your presence obvious. It could bring walkers right to your doorstep, mostly due to it’s barking triggered by it’s protective nature. If it makes your presence known, by all means, run like hell alongside of it. But if it begins to slow you down, you’ll have to do something a clod-hearted bastard would do: break one of it’s legs and leave as bait for the walkers. I don’t want to have to think about it, I know. The thought of it makes me want to throw up. But if something like that happened, I would not hesitate. Call me a bastard if you wish, but it would be the smart thing to do.

The smart thing to do would be to chop it up and throw its organs at the walkers. If you're going to do what it takes to survive with those methods, may as well pull all the stops.

I'd personally never do something like that, simply locking the dog in a separate room where it can't follow you and would lead the walkers to(with full barks and not injured whimpers) would be sufficient, but that's just me.

  • If you manage to leave the city, a dog could be incredibly useful for alerting you of anyone or anything nearby.

As I said it could do the same in the city but might be more harmful than not in that case.

I would do it if we were starved but then eating the fucking dog will only help for about a day with food then what??? kids next? I mean I know it's a dog and not a person but I AM A PERSON and eating your dog IS just as bad as eating some survivor thats a stranger. Tell the military you killed and ate your dog...they will proly put you down with the walkers cuz it's not ok....NOT! whatever I'm dumb and would proly die but at least I would still have my humanity....jesus.

This is my last post on these forums. what the fuck. Not having fun talking about killing my dog...gave me fucking nightmares. Hope you all enjoy the 5th episode and have a happy thanksgiving. Peace out;)

Okay, I didn't want to get involved, but your posts are all ridiculous. You're either simple in the head, or ten years old. Eating a dog is nowhere CLOSE to eating a person. I understand your point about it being hard on the kids, but it wouldn't affect their "mental health", unless they were ludicrously overly-emotional. If we told the military in a zombie apocalypse that we killed and ate a dog, apart from being a pointless thing to do because they have survival in mind and honestly wouldn't mind much if surviving meant eating a dog, if anything they would agree that it was the right thing to do.

The maker of the forum mentioned in passing how it may be necessary to eat the animals such as dogs or cats so you don't starve and die a painful death. He just wants to protect his family, Jesus Christ.

I have four dogs myself and I love them like family, and no, I would not put them down or eat them, but I understand why many people would.

I do not, however, understand your way of thinking.

I love my dogs more than I love life itself (Katjaa deja vu there O.o), but I wouldn't "put someone down with the walkers" for eating their dog.

    Wow.

I usually respect people's points of view, but Christ. Yours is just... no.

So yeah. Have this load of text.

  • At the very least i would force such people out of the group. Give them some food and guns, find a safe/secure area or help build one and leave them there. Learn how to farm and grow your own food like Hershel rather than killing a valuable and potentially life-saving asset to survival.

  • I have a Swiss shepeard which is similar to the German shepeard but hes is white dough.. he is a part of the family and i love him very much.. the only problem is that he barks at everything bcs he's protective and teritorial .. i rly wouldnt know what to do with him in the ZA.. probably will have to shoot him.. but i wouldnt have the guts to do it .. :/
