A Clementine Death

Okay so this thread is either going to create discussion or make me a very hated member ;)

I brushed upon this in another thread where there were a couple of responses, however I wanted to look into it further.

Would anyone here have been interested to see at least an alternate choice-based ending where Clem dies? Either instead of Lee or along with Lee... that's not too important.
Purely for emotional reasons - I adore Clementine of course. But I've got to say I desperately wanted an ending where she had a full, story based death (as opposed to her 'game over' ones :L). I wanted to see what TellTale could do if they made the most saddening ending with a Clem death as possible.

If you're one of the people who say they would hate TellTale if they killed Clem and would refuse to play any more - is there any reason beyond just really liking Clem? It seems a very extreme response. Even more extreme than Cry's playthrough of the ending :p

Imagine Season 2 doesn't come into this at all, as it would naturally mess it up. I ask as if Season 1 was a stand alone project.

I'll also put this as a poll out of curiosity, for a canon Clem death, alternate one or as it is now :)

    Nice.

  • She doesn't have to die, just go away. Killing her for shock value, while devastatingly hilarious in terms of the reaction from players, seems to go more from "ANYONE CAN die," to "EVERYONE WILL die." Since Clem was what Lee fought and died for in Season 1, her death would pretty much make everything he did meaningless. That's all of Season 1 right there. I think she can leave the series without dying, just have her go with Christa and Omid, or whoever she finds after she escaped Savannah, and leaves the PC and the PC's group. She won't be around to be the morality pet anymore without her having to have been disemboweled by rotting corpses.

Everyone will die, that's just the way it is in this world. There are no happy endings or walking off into the sunset. She's going to die, it's just the question over whether, as a storyteller, you want to get some pay-off from the investment you've made in a character or you want it to happen off-screen, so to speak.

Oh boy I laughed so hard...

  • Man... if she died in the first episode... I don't think I'd want to play anymore. I'd go from, "Hell yeah! I'll keep Clem safe for Lee!" to "What... just... happened?" and just bang my head in the corner with shame. It'd be awhile before I got back into the game lol.

Of course she'll die eventually, but it doesn't have to be from walkers or anything. And yeah, it's a zombie apocalypse and lots of people you know are going to die, but pretty much the entire original group bit the dust in Season 1. Clem is the only one left to remember Lee, Carley, Ben, and the rest. Good storytelling isn't always killing off characters, no matter how well it's done, sometimes it's letting those characters live to see another day and remember those who were lost. Sometimes, believe it or not, things DO work out ok.

Well, oh well... I'd probably join you banging my head in the corner as well...

On a more serious note, after she'd be dead, I'd have no moral compass any more, and I wouldn't give a shit any more. The huge things she added to the story, were:
    1) Someone the protagonist lived for, someone to keep him going. Now with the protagonist gone, she served that purpose I guess. But
    2) She also served as a moral compass. Let me tell, if it wasn't for her, then the statistics after every episode would have looked sooo different.
More Saint John's brothers would have been killed, more supplies would have been taken, more strangers killed etc. Killing her off, at least too early, seems like no good idea to me. - Then again, I'm no professional story writer.

  • Clem death in the next season would be great for the game story! this have to happen to make it sadder then lee if not not sadder then lee

Of course! You're a genius! That's what we need! It's so fresh idea. No one even suggests that this could happen.

  • @Ninnuendo said: Not only should she die but in my view she has to. From a logical standpoint, the longer she's around the less effective she will become and in terms of story, logically she can't survive. The only question really is whether Telltale have the bawls to kill her off and the confidence to follow up with something equally strong. I have my doubts.

Personally I think it would be worth her dying just to see the reaction.

    EDIT

In a sense I think she's restraining the story, maybe in a good way. What I'd love though is Season 2 starting, just settling back into the game and then BANG! She dies in the first 10 minutes. There couldn't be a better way for Telltale to pull the rug out from under the community.

IF Clem were to die, I think it would be smart to leave it till later in season 2 over even in a third season. Give the community a little time to get invested in a new story and characters, and then whack em over the head with her death. That way hordes of raging fanboys won't throw away their season passes, they will still want to play.

Or if you did want to go for shock factor, then sure, have Clem step on a land mine 5 mins into the game. Who knows what TT will do.
