Problems with Episode 3 AND 4

posted by Xerathus on - last edited - Viewed by 327 users

I've been playing this game with no problems at all on the PC up until episode three. Well, around the ending of episode three and beginning of episode four. When I finished episode three and let the game save, I closed my game. (I bought the game via Steam.)
A couple of weeks later, I decide to play the game again, with the intention of starting on episode four. But that was not the case, when I booted it up, it forced me to re-watch the last five minutes of episode three. I then played a little bit of episode four, about an hour's worth of progress. Then, I decided to take a break and exit the game around the point where I had to explore the house. I know the game saved at this point because there was a little circle icon on the upper right corner of my screen.
Then, I go back to resume my game, but instead of continuing where I left off, the game reverts my progress ALL THE WAY BACK to the end of episode three. It's as if my progress in that sitting never happened.
What I did a day after was do the same. Still, the game seems to be reverting my progress no matter what.
What is going on?

Please try renaming the prefs.prop in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Walking Dead\Pack\default
to prefs.prop.bak in order to deactivate it.

  • After doing that, it is now a prefs.prop.bak.prop file. Did I do this correctly? I'm not sure if I did.

That should be okay too. Have you tried the game afterwards?

  • It worked perfectly. Thank you so much for your help!

  • I'm having the same problem on my Mac. I changed the file:

    /Users/david/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/prefs.prop

    to

    /Users/david/Library/Application Support/Telltale Games/TheWalkingDead/prefs.prop.bak

but when I launched the game and tried to load up my episode 4 save, it prompted me back into the end of episode 3. Additionally, I looked for this file:

    /Users/david/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/The Walking Dead/TheWalkingDead.app/Contents/Resources/Pack/default/prefs.prop

but I flat out couldn't get any farther in the /common folder than the actual Walking Dead application. Please help!

I would try moving the steam prefs.prop to the savegame folder.

You can right-click (or CTRL-click) on TheWalkingDead.app and select "Show package contents" to get deeper into the folders.

You can also use this script to fix it. It creates backup copies of both prefs.prop files, and moves the Steam prefs.prop to the savegame folder.

  • Awesome thank you! That script fixed the problem.
