Sam and Max Season 2 won't launch

posted by ZekeDMS on - last edited - Viewed by 1.8K users

Or 1 for that matter!

I'm not quite sure why, I'm not actually getting an error. 1 gives me two windows crash messages without much else, but 2 just doesn't do anything. The process launches and closes itself in under a second, but there's no error or anything, it doesn't even draw a window. I've tried deleting the folders entirely (both are steam copies), redownloading, validating, etc., but I get the same result. Nothing has changed to my knowledge from when they did work and stopped working. I'm on the latest ATI drivers (Radeon 5770, I think), Windows 7, 64 bit.

Please check if the game crash creates an entry in the
event viewer in the "Windows Logs/Application" section.
If so, right click the entry, select "copy the details as text", and paste them in a new reply.

Do you have LUA installed? That can cause problems.

Also, please post your dxdiag info.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.
Windows 8: At the start screen, type in "dxdiag" and hit enter

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

  • I do have LUA installed, actually. Is the best solution to uninstall when I'm playing, or is there a workaround?

@ZekeDMS said: I do have LUA installed, actually. Is the best solution to uninstall when I'm playing, or is there a workaround?

Good, then that's likely the problem.

Actually only the environment variable LUA_PATH conflicts with several earlier TTG games.
You can either remove the Environment Variable globally, or you can create a batch file for each episode that first unsets it like
    set LUA_PATH=
    Homestar101.exe

  • Environment variable for LUA as a whole, for the earlier TT games? I'm afraid you've gone over my head on this one, what am I looking for, and where?

Edit:Nevermind, found it. Went to computer properties, advanced system settings, advanced tab, found it in there. Hope that helps anyone with issues in the future!

And did it fix the crashes?

  • Yup, launching just fine now. Thanks! Such a weird issue.
