dosbox and floppy disks

I have recently begun using dos box and have so far played, ecoquest from cd, and amaze/insanity from c:\

I have been contemplating purchasing a portable usb floppy disk drive to play some of my older floppy games such as wonderland, legend of kyrandia, and secret of monkey island.

Can i just load the usb/floppy onto dos box in the same way as the cd drive?...

It shouldn't be a problem. You can mount whatever drive on dosbox, as long as your operating system acknowledge the drive.

More importantly, you should really just backup all those floppy into a hardisk or thumbdrive. Floppy won't last forever.

yup, easier than mounting a cd drive - just add ' mount a a:\ ' to the config file, that is if your floppy drive is assigned to a

Do you need to press CTRL+F4 when you switch floppies, like with CDs?
I can't remember, but I think you do.

No. You don't even need to do that to CDs. Just open the tray put another one in. DOSBox is smart enough to know the difference.

Is that new? I had to press CTRL+F4 when I recorded the GK2 longplay some time ago (I used CD images, though... maybe that's why? I never use my original discs).

Oh, for images yes. They're talking about actual physical floppy disks, though.

I read something about having to press ctrl+f4 for images. Thank goodness for whom ever posted that. I was having a terrible time getting dosbox to re-read the usb floppy's. The trick was the same as images, ctrl+f4 refreshes the data and you can proceed.

I hope that helps someone else struggling to find a similar issue.

Or you could use your USB drive and make floppy drive images out of your disks. That's what I do, whenever possible.

How the hell do you work it!?

You can get the first two Elder scrolls games for free on the offical website, but you have to use Dosbox.... Problem is that I can't figure it out.

While I, too, have no problem doing that*, the issue is that those copies on the internet are unauthorized reproductions of their sources, and that's what makes them illegal. Whether or not you own the real deal would be irrelevant to whomever would like to sue you. :)


On the flip side, if the original poster does get around to getting his/her own floppy drive, you may be interested in RawWrite (http://www.chrysocome.net/rawwrite) for backing up your floppies.

I still have plenty of floppies, 5.25 and 3.5, one contains my diploma thesis. Thinking about it, i forgot which one it was...oh well (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByeQ4Lc1Igc).
