Well, they do have a house (http://samandmax.net/wiki/Sam_%26_Max%27s_House). I figure if they end up sleeping in the office, it only means they were too lazy to drive home.

I like to pretend that they have an apartment in their office building. I know they have a house in the cartoon, but the different versions of Sam and Max do sometimes to contradict each other. And it's really vague where they were in the Damned Don't Dance, the Christmas comic.

In the Telltale games, Max does say "You mean we've been living over the gateway to Hell all this time and never took advantage of it?". Sama also refers to their office as their living space in Chariots of the Dogs.
