Is is necessary to have internet access on the computer to be able to play Secret of Monkey Island: Special edition?

I plan to download Steam and buy the game on a computer with internet access and then install it on my portable computer (no internet).

You should be able to play offline, but I think all Steam games need to be activated online before you can play it. In other words you will need to be able to connect the portable computer to the internet to activate the game. Once it is activated properly, you should be able to play the game offline as much as you want. I generally leave my games computer connected to the internet all the time, so apart from a quick test I just did to make sure I could play it with my network card disabled (which worked), I can't really answer the question further.

Unfortunately you need to log on Steam every time you want to play MI:SE.

Edit : or at least the game asks you to connect to steam when you launch it.

You have to run Steam to play Steam games but Steam has an offline mode.

If the game doesn't work offline after activating, try going into offline mode while connected to the internet and starting the game. It should work offline after you have done this. (I had to do this for a different game several months ago and got the solution from a forum post about yet another game. I have no idea if it is needed for MI:SE.)

I'm new to steam. I just downloaded it for SMI special edition. Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I kind of like the knowledge that I have the game in my hand and know that I'll have it always. What if something happened to Steam? Would I still be able to play the game?

Steam isn't going anywhere. It is owned by Valve who pretty much rule the video game world thanks to the success of Half Life, Portal and Left 4 Dead.
As long as you don't forget your log on details you can log on to steam on any computer and play your game.

Also I am 16 and I prefer a physical copy.

I'm more of a fan of physical copies too, but I've no problem with buying games as downloads if they're cheap enough (Less than a fiver or so), or I've got the option of a disc like with Telltale's games.

... so you're saying that no game on earth should have ANY kind of anti-piracy protection? Or do you just have this psychotic unreasonable grudge against Steam and Steam alone?

They only work for a very short time until someone cracks it. They need new, innovative DRM's. I even seen tales of monkey island on a few torrent sites.

No, they need basic DRM that prevents average people from making 20 copies for their friends. Spending extravagant amounts of money on insane draconian DRMs is pointless and idiotic because the second something touches the internet, it's guaranteed to be cracked in under a week.
