Not sure if this is a stupid question but can you just download chapter one instead of having to pay 30 odd quid to get all of them, like they did with sam and max?

Nope, only on the Wii.
ToMI has one big story arc as opposed to the stand-alone episodes of earlier games. See it as one big game. It's just released in parts, but they don't make any sense on their own.

This has nothing to do with it. Playing any other Telltale season in reverse order is at best an inadvisable idea, and yet they were available individually.
It has nothing to do with CUSTOMER benefit, as far as I can see, other than the stated idea that too many options is confusing. But for the educated consumer, it's just taking away an option that was always there for monetary reasons, not because it's logistically impossible or because it provides any tangible benefit.

God, I can't wait until they make it available individually so everyone can stop complaining about it.

That's your perspective. I think it's probably both... TTG wants more full sales, naturally, but what do you think the reaction would have been had they released the episodes individually and somebody somebody would have bought the first episode expecting a full game, as was the case with Sam and Max only to find that he basically got an intro?
