if you've never played a Monkey Island game before?

So I have a Wii and was thinking about getting some points in a week or so so I can get some new games. After seeing some screenshots and videos it seems like a great adventure game, but I feel I'm going to be missing out on jokes/puns/character backgrounds because I've never played a Monkey Island game.

Now I might note that I also knew absolutely nothing about Strong Bad and his friends before I bought one of the games, and I ended up buying all 5 episodes and still play them from time to time. I was kinda hoping Monkey Island would have the same effect :D

So...to buy or not to buy? Can't try the demo since my computer is so shit it won't even play it on the lowest quality.

Definitely, the inside jokes you won't notice are there, and then if you like it, go back and play the older ones (especially the just released Monkey Island 1: Special Edition (http://www.direct2drive.com/496/8241/product/Buy-The-Secret-of-Monkey-Island(R):-Special-Edition-Download)) then you can replay it and get all of the in-jokes as well!

Perhaps you're asking a rather biased sample, but...YES!!

Ok, from a person in your exact scenario, yes. I enjoyed the game, even though I may have missed some jokes. It got me to buy the Secret of Monkey Island - SE. But if you can't even run the demo, you might want to talk to the TTG staff to see if Monkey Island is right for you. I've just re-downloaded the demo and this time it suddenly worked. I guess the problem was with the download itself.

Anyway, I just completed the demo and it was fun to play, so I guess I'm going to buy this one :)

you should know that the opening sequence is more or less entriely random and based on an imaginary Monkey Island 5. If you feel lost, don't worry, you haven't missed anything.

I don't like the idea that it's "based on an imaginary Monkey Island 5." The story just starts where it starts.

That said, really no previous knowledge is needed. The story introduces (or re-introduces as the case may be) with the characters, setting, and situation quite easily, and entertainingly.

The opening sequence could be confusing because it's one big allusion to the type of adventures Guybrush (the hero) regularly gets himself into. You can still play the game without any introduction and get what's going on, I think, but it might be helpful to know LeChuck is Guybrush's undead nemesis, a zombie/ghost/demon pirate who's in love with Guybrush's wife, Elaine. Previous adventures primarily revolved around LeChuck's zany schemes to get rid of Guybrush and marry Elaine.

As for getting the adventure on the Wii -- I think the PC version is the best version out there so far, but the Wii version is alright, if you're not too picky. Keep in mind sound quality and animation is a little bit rougher than what was on Strong Bad, but the graphics are a step up from Strong Bad's as well.

You don't need to have played any of the old games in depth for this, though you'll enjoy it more if you're at least familiar with the main characters.

Once you know the basic premise it's very easy to pick up on the style of humor and the main characters

I was certain I would get it, but since I can only get it for the Wii(don't have creditcard) I'm still not sure whether to buy it. A lot of people say it's much lower quality than the PC version, and that the voices crack/there are framerate issues.

I'm going to buy Wiipoints tomorrow so I'll see what I'll do with them. I might wait until Chapter 2 comes out and see if it has the same issues. Will Chapter 2 also be released on the 20th of August in Europe? Because Strong Bad was always delayed :(

Those people make me very mad:mad: The wiiware version is just fine. I found no probelms except for when you hit the home button while someone is talking which happened in strong bad and sam and max save the world. I reccomend the wiiware version dispite the idiots who probably lied and said it's crappy.

To your second question, isnt the 20th a Thursday? I thought wiiware updates on Fridays for the people in Europe?

Yeah it updates on Fridays. I just meant in the same week :3

Oh man, I'm going to buy SOMETHING tomorrow and I still don't know what. I'm looking at:

MySims
MySims Kingdom
2000 Wiipoints
A good used Wii game

Not much I can buy with 20 bucks :(

If your computer can't run Tales on the optimum settings (to get the full-fat experience, as it were), then I'd definitely go for the Wii version. The pointer controls feel great, the general feel is good and it's a great introduction to the Monkey Island fold. It's doesn't run 100% smoothly, admittedly, however it's far from unplayable... And a great alternative if your computer can't run the game on its' highest settings.

Think of it as a PC game on your Wii, and you'll have a ball. :D

I think you can also get the (full) PC version through Telltale using Paypal instead of a credit card... not sure about through Amazon though if you just want chapter 1.

I sold a game(Animal Crossing: City Folk) and had enough money to buy both MadWorld(Which is awesome) and 1000 Wiipoints.

I think I'll wait until Chapter 2 comes out, if that one also has issues, I probably won't buy it, if not, I'll buy that one and just read up on the story of Chapter 1.

I understand that the faults are the usual Telltale console problems (dodgy frame rate and movement bugs, mostly). Oh, and compressed speech. So, nothing new there.

The game is worth playing regardless of whether you've played the originals, but playing the early games will definitely increase your appreciation for the humor. If I had to recommend, I'd say play the very first Monkey Island game (because it's where this whole thing began) and then play the third installment (because you get the voice-acting and more modernized feel). Either way, enjoy!
