Game activation?

Hi.
I am just curious - do I have to activate the game in any way?

The reason I ask is because at a certain stage in the game i just cant get further. I KNOW I'm doing the right stuff. (It's about having a desire for my peer's age.) But even though I'm doing it right, I'm not getting the last check on my form.
Is this because I haven't activated the game...or??

I don't think so... I played the game without activation (Telltale was having the issues the first day) and when I tried to leave Sam & Max's office, the game quit on me, but after activation I was able to get past the office.
