Perhaps Earl Boen thought Tales would flop and didn't want his name attached to it. Once he saw the huge success though he said, "Oh, I need to get in on this!", and viola. Lol, just a joke, but who knows.

It's sad to think that i may be the only person who just wasn't as impressed with this episode as they hoped to be. Don't get me wrong i i've really enjoyed the chapters so far, this one included. Maybe it was just the combination of waiting to play and being able to kill it without a walkthrough in under 2 hours, but it just left me feeling like alot of the episode/puzzles had been cut out to meet todays release. Overall i am still very impressed with the tales, and the storyline overall, it just felt like this chapter was too short and easy. I really hope the final chapter is a doozy, and that they stretch it out and pack it as full of puzzles as is humanly possible. So yeah still cant wait for episode 5. Bring it on!

I was kind of skeptical midway through the episode because of the confusing plot twist and the unnecessary drama with Morgan's death. Truthfully, maybe I was unfazed because I don't care at all about Morgan as a character. (Seems her only purpose was to cause a bit of mischief for the hero, mostly serve to invoke a triangle and then have a convenient death? >:|) Still though, I don't mind a ~*~SERIOUS SCENE~*~ from time to time but that was a little too much. Even my friend (we were playing this together) was all "he's going to say something silly at the end of this right? WHAT. He didn't?" When you try to have this kind of scene with such a short-lived character in a humorous game, it just doesn't work for me.
The ending was a little dramatic too, but not as bad and I didn't mind it. I'm glad the weird plot twist was at least a little explained by the end of this episode, so other than the previously mentioned scene, I really liked this episode.

I loved it. Fantastic ending. Even though it used Flotsam again, and I was already frustrated at the lack of locations in Ep 3, it was used well, and Flotsam was probably the most interesting place so far anyway. The instant I saw what happened with De Singe, I already knew what was coming, but the cliffhanger was by far the best one. And for once, it did NOT involve Guybrush and Morgan on the ship. About damn time.
One complaint: Where was the Phoenix Wright reference? I mean, with all the courtroom scenes. >_> Even just a line of dialogue with a homage to one of the more famous lines (like "Objection! That was... objectionable!") that would only be noticed by fans, would have been awesome to hear Guybrush or Stan using.

Wow, that was certainly my favorite episode so far. The trial was lots of fun, and the mild turn for the serious works, I think.
Perhaps Earl Boen thought Tales would flop and didn't want his name attached to it. Once he saw the huge success though he said, "Oh, I need to get in on this!", and viola. Lol, just a joke, but who knows.
I think it's simply just that zombie LeChuck and human LeChuck have different vocal qualities, so they ended up with two actors.

I think it's simply just that zombie LeChuck and human LeChuck have different vocal qualities, so they ended up with two actors.
Well, that and the fact that they probably didn't want to bring him in to speak only...what, twenty lines for the first episode.
Whereas now they could record his lines at more or less the same time that they'd be recording the final episode's lines, so they signed him on.
Rather Dashing
10/31/2009, 02:22 am
I was...I dunno. I guess sort of disappointed by the episode, especially in comparison with the last one. The drama was...it felt very much like "stock" dramatic moves, rather than something organic and genuine.
The puzzle design this episode was pretty good. Lots of puzzles with red herrings, but there felt like a lot of the puzzle solving came down to just running around and going through very long monologues just to sort of find out where you were. The puzzles, while DESIGNED well, just were kind of introduced in a very plodding way. It did kind of allow for several of these to be solved at once, but it also left sections of the game feeling bogged down by exposition.
Individual puzzles I liked include:
-Fabricating he leg burn
-The space-bending map
-Getting Elaine the summons
-The whole jungle beast sequence was pretty good, too.
But there is just so much more in terms of good puzzles, in my opinion, in the last episode.
I think it's simply just that zombie LeChuck and human LeChuck have different vocal qualities, so they ended up with two actors.
Or, you know, the guy is RETIRED and has a life outside of playing pirates.

That's not a criticism, i loved escape (well excluding Melee/lucre, but's thats because at the time, i couldn't read clocks and i had no PS2 memory card, so i repeatedly played the same part)

It was incredible. Chef-d'oeuvre. Just a couple of thoughts to share.
1. Stemmle is an incredibly talented designer: he's got a very classical conception of adventure gaming, his puzzles are solid and magnifically interwoven, difficulty is carefully balanced, solutions are always unexpected and satisfying. But he's also an extraordinary storyteller: he can mould the genre into his hands with unparalleled facility, and transform it into something deep and moving. Plot, drama and atmosphere, as an integral part of the gameplay, were simply outstanding.
2. I believe this could be considered Telltale's first attempt at a not exclusively comical setting. Well, they've accomplished it without a doubt. The way in which they're making these characters mature beneath our eyes is somehow profoundly revolutionary. As far as I remember, I've never been brought to tears by a videogame before (even though some (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/display.php?id=34) have (http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,104) come close).
3. Telltale is not afraid of Monkey Island. After having spent twenty years exploring this world, we're compelled to reconsider it all, once again: one more reason to say "bravo" out loud.

There just so many questions that need to be answered in the final chapter now.
How does Guybrush Come back?
How is Lechuck Defeated?
What happens to the voodoo lady?
What happened to Morgan?
What's the significance of The Rock Of Gelato?
Who killed Morgan?
What happened to Guybushes collection of Sextants?

Well, they were able to reveal De Singe's true plans and his ultimate fate, LeChuck's true allegiance, the full story of the sponge, finish the pox aspect of the story, introduce the voodoo lady revelation, as well as the whole Elaine and Morgan with the latter dying. I'm sure that won't have a problem tying everything else up in the last chapter.

Wow, a lot of people didn't enjoy the "laboratory scene". I couldn't stop smiling as it reminded me so much of the "lighthouse scene" in Grim Fandango. Oh, and by the way pretty damn good episode. The first Monkey Island game that felt truly dark since 2. That's some achievement.:)

10/31/2009, 05:39 pm
Just ended it. It was epic!
Just that was LeChuck evil all along? It didn't look like such. He was even away from Guybrush, a key for finding the sponge, for a long time. Only that his facial expression gave me the chills when Guybrush sai to him "The sponge is still small". Somewhere at that point, I think LeChuck changed from good to pretending-to-be good. Maybe the Voodoo Lady told him something? Or hexed him to fulfill his evil undead zombie pirate destiny... although with a hint of oregano.
Speaking of w(h)ich, I don't think she's evil or anything. Maybe this all IS a part of a more major scheme (Pirate Godness?).
It seems anything really doesn't prove anything. Did LeChuck swim for three days because of a friendship or because of the Sponge? Did De Zinc (orwhatwasit :P) kill Morgan? Why did Morgan disappear? Because of the Voodoo Lady? Because of her body being a test subject for the wind machine? Because of the moths? :( Why wasn't I fast enough to realise that the Sixth Sense effect would have made a cool wallpaper and couldn't hit the PrtSc button fast enough?
Anyway, the third part and this have been even better than the two first ones in my opinion. Actually every adventure has been better than its predecessor! If this continues, well, Rise of the Pirate God should be huge indeed...

My bet is that GT's hand will come back healing his wounds like it did for De Singe
Also I sort of think that since the Voodoo lady has been revealed as a puppet master of sorts I wouldnt be all that surprised to find out that Morgan is working with her and faked her death to further manipulate GT into action. Some people thought she could be the Voodoo ladies daughter... maybe thats true.... Also De Singe denied having killed her I think he was telling the truth..... if she is indeed dead my bet would be on LeChuck being the killer... If GT could get out of prison LeChuck could have too.

I've been playing the game since it came out, though this is the first time I've posted here. I just have to congratulate Telltale. The storytelling in this part is absolutly superb. Just superb. Even though there is a voice in my head shouting that Monkey Island should not make me want to cry.
What I'm trying to say is that I really respect how they handled all the stuff in this chapter. I mean, it was still funny, but it managed to have real, heartwrenching drama as well, without one overshadowing the other.
Kudos.

No way is morgan dead, the rowboat disappearing after her body vanishes I thought was a clear giveaway. Dont know why she would fake it, and why she wants to escape Flotsam but I guess we'll find out soon
The row boat is still there. It's just been sunk by "a Pox-infected pirate."

um... wow.
Kudos.
Now, if you'll excuse me... *sob*
I think that this 4th chapter is the real return to the old atmospheres of monkey1/2. It's dark, funny and dramathic. It's only me or the club 41 remembers the scumm bar? I think it had the same music also.

I have to agree with what's been posted here before. Episode 4 is by a wide margin my favourite one so far. Took me much longer to complete then the others aswell, i'd guess about 6hrs. What a great story and cliffhanger at the end. I'm really psyched for Episode 5 now.

Anyone with Fraps could easily record it. It's the second half that would be too much work for me.

Once again, congratulations Telltale. Man, you guys and girls just keep on doing such amazing work. Episode 3, I felt, was going to be hard to top, but "The Trial and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood" was so wonderful. I love that you all aren't afraid to contribute so much to the Monkey universe and keep moving the story forward. You are storytellers after all, and you are crafting something special here.
Bravo.

Well, I was a little slower than usual completing this one, but it's definitely the best episode yet. Some of those scenes were really shocking and very emotional, perhaps not quite enough to get me teary eyed (as it's somewhat predictable what will happen :P) but still very well done.
None of the other Monkey Island games have really attempted anything on that level, and while it's good they stick to more light hearted material, I think this was appropriate enough to add some seriousness and emotion without losing sight of what makes it Monkey Island.
Can't wait for the final episode :)

This is the best episode so far in the series
Actually, it seem like every new episode is better than the previous to me!
but oh man, the fourth one nailed everything you want from MI game and MORE
here is what i think of the episode but just to be safe, im gonna tag it with spoiler mark
+ cinematic direction.
+ it was funnier.
+ dramatic moments ... *sad face*.
+ twists.
+ puzzles that demanded creative thinking.
+ beautiful atmosphere made the town so speci
+ one of the best soundtracks so far are mixed in this episode with new ones. (well maybe I prefer ep3 more because of DeCava themes)
+ Lightning ... a.w.e.s.o.m.e! specially when you put Guybrush next to those glowing idol in the jungle.
+ Darker theme, Kinda like MI2 but I think this one is more darker
The only thing is, the final puzzle in the episode wasn't "very challenging" but still enjoyable ...
I am looking forward for episode 5 and hopefully we will have a strong final like MI2 :D the one in MI1 was simple, MI3 was annoying and MI4 was like "THAT'S IT??". I place my trust in you, TellTale and let's all hope for epic final conclusion to the best monkey island game so far :D

Much as I enjoyed the episodes and the many twists it took, I do have some complaints. Spoilered for prosperity
The introduction felt a bit rushed and forced, understandable but still irritating.
Morgan's "death" was pretty ham handed, not out odf any fault of direction, but because it's pretty easy to break the tone by clicking on something. When he comments of the door being locked he sounds like he got over it pretty quick. To be honest, not an easy solution comes to mind for this, but it's not my job to think of those solutions.
And now my major complaint for all the deaths in the game, where is the BLOOD! That might sound pinikity but dammit, how can I take the deaths seriously if there's not sign of a wound! It just looked like the models of the sword and body had clipped. I was fairly sure Morgan's death was going to be a joke until she "died". Same goes for Guybrush, though less so as I had come to expect no blood.

I liked this chapter very much but I liked the whole series so far. Some of the story got much more serious than I ever remember Monkey Island doing before. My one gripe was some of the puzzles were very specific so I end up going online looking for hints to them. The order you had to get the guy up on the stand with the cat and then rub the monkey with the draw a beard thing in order to make the cat move was annoying. I tried doing that in so many different ways, it got frustrating.
I wasn't too shocked about the ending since I figured something like that was going to happen. I know some people don't think Morgan is dead but it's be an interesting idea if Morgan and Guybrush have to help each other escape the underworld together. It's hard to believe we're at chapter 5 already. It still feels like a lot more of the story has to develop. Well now they've got me really hoping there's a Season 2 or MI 5 or 6.

This Episode was AWESOME!! Great story line and an AMAZING ending I am sooo looking forward to Chapter 5. This is by FAR the BEST Chapter yet and Reccomend it to everyone.
I fear that the underworld escape will turn somehow a Superman's Phantom Zone escape thingy
I found it good, but I'll have a final veredict after a second play, and for that I'll have to wait 13 more days (I hate this stupid training overseas with this stupid outdated notebook that can't run ToMI)

I thought his tone was pretty sad, to be honest.
They can't put blood in because of ratings. Which re-instates my theory that the ESRB need to fix their very bad ratings system.

His tone was sad providing you clicked on some stuff, but even then he seems to get over it pretty quick.
And Carnage love blood :D
Well I finished Ch4 yesterday evening, and I am amazed at the quality, the puzzles and the dramatic of it. I thought Ch3 was fantastic, but for me Ch4 even topped it. Which leaves me with an uneasy question: can Ch5 match this? It doesn't need to be even better, but it would be a small let-down if it would be less than Ch4 in terms of story, twists, puzzles and how it connects all loose ends of Ch1-Ch4.
Well done Telltale, ToMI has matured to Adventure Excellence, or should I say La Aventura Grande :)

You want to know what I thought of the fourth episode? Well, I'll tell you what I thought of the fourth episode.
This might very well be the best game in the Monkey Island franchise so far.
The drama, dialog, atmosphere and plot twists were excellent, right up there on the level of MI2. I especially loved the fire and spark in the character interactions, this is what a Monkey Island game should be like.
The puzzles were some of the best in the season so far. Challenging, surprising and ultimately very satisfying. Again, this reminds me of MI2 in a very positive way.
And then there's the ending scene. Oh my god. There's no need to say anything, just bask in it's glory. Bask, I tell ya.
Conclusion: how much money do I need to shell out in order to make Season 2 possible? Will you be accepting Visa, Undying Gratitude, or the promise of my future earnings, as well as the earnings of my children and my children's children?
--
It's now been 18 years since I played The Secred of Monkey Island. Today I finished a sequel to that game that might very well turn out to be the best game in the series. This is pretty amazing since in computer game terms a timespan of 18 years is something like the frickin' Precambrian Era. And what's even worse, I guess a large part of the people who play ToMI today were actually born after TSoMI was released. This must be how fans of classic rock feel like, i.e. old.

Epic. Awesome. Stellar.
Best episode thus far. Very mature, and wonderfully coordinated.
Right from the start I felt bombarded with puzzles, but it felt good. Knocking them all down really puts you on a roll. Never needed a hint from Guybrush, and this game lasted long for me. One of those games where you wish you could wipe it from memory and play it over like brand new.
I mean, I can't really say much more. Just good job all around to everyone.

I just hit the same problem, and I'm running under XP. If you talk with the Voodoo lady again (difficult, as you keep bringing up the inventory accientally) you're again outside. But it seems any movement after that just puts you back inside.

Once again I was very busy when the chapter first came out, so I've only recently got round to finishing it. But WOW, what an episode to remember! The twists in the storyline were nicely revealed, and I don't recall anything that contradicted the previous games either.
I think I got the most gameplay out of this one so far, probably because there were 2 or 3 puzzles I got stuck on for a long time, only to soon discover I'd missed something obvious! Yeah, I have moments like that a lot. The puzzles were great as always, I especially liked the jungle puzzle in this chapter.
At first I thought the highlight of this episode would be the return of Stan, but actually for me the strongest part of this one was definitely the storyline. Amazing stuff. Really exciting, shocking, and keeps you hooked. That said, Stan was still as awesome as ever. I love what the graphic artists did with his jacket, and the animators did a perfect job with his crazy arm waving!
I convinced myself that Katherine Krebbs would turn out to be Kate Capsize. She mentioned something about Guybrush using her ship, and something along the lines of being framed/arrested. But the revelation of her mistake was pretty amusing!
Stan helped to give the chapter a light-hearted beginning, in contrast to how dark it got later. I didn't believe that DeSinge killed Morgan - at first I thought Elaine may have done it (while in her poxed state). Now I'm thinking it was LeChuck!
Ever since I first found out what the titles were of chapters 4 and 5, I suspected that Guybrush would die at the end of this chapter. But even when it happened, I still stared at the screen, jaw-dropped and with wide eyes. Even when I'd prepared myself it was still a shock!
Adventure games have ways of making you care about the characters, I always find. And this one is a perfect example. Very well done to everyone at Telltale - I already knew you were capable of quality comedy, and it's great to see you are capable of a much more serious atmosphere too. Great work!

I've watched the ending cutscene maybe 5 or 6 times now. That was the most awesome, pivotal moment in Monkey Island's history. I was especially impressed after watching it the second time since the first time around I was thinking "LeChuck's doing a great job twisting the knife on Elaine; shame Guybrush is too occupied with dying to notice". Then I saw that he DID hear what LeChuck was saying; the hurt look on his face was heartbreaking, and truly put LeChuck firmly into Evil Manipulative Bastard class.
You know, I wonder how TTG is going to handle the next game? I mean, the tension's been cranked to 11 - you wouldn't want to lose too much of that before the finale, but then you can't keep everyone on tenterhooks for the 2-4 hours it'll take to play through the game.
I don't know if anyone's mentioned it before, but I'm hoping Elaine will be playable for at least part of the next game. Everyone knows she's supposedly more competent than Guybrush, but we've never had the chance to experience it, or even watch her get out of her past scrapes.
Also, Ultimate Mumbly Peg sounds pretty cool! I had to look up the rules for ordinary Mumbly Peg, it's essentially a game that involves throwing a knife at your foot without actually stabbing yourself. What are the rules for Ultimate Mumbly Peg? And to guys like Hemlock have to take a handicap to play (pun mostly intended)?

I recall people saying that the last game will probably involve a bit of either controlling another character, or controlling Guybrush in the ghost pirate world. While I find it difficult to imagine playing Monkey Island with anyone other than Guybrush, when watching that final cut-scene I did actually think that Elaine would be a great character to play. Maybe just for the first part, but I think it could work.
I'm iffy about controlling Elaine, but it would be funny if the bit you play as her (if it exists) shows her being insanely overpowered and the exact opposite in competence from Guybrush. The deleted bit from the end of TCOMI where she singlehandedly fights off hordes of skeletons comes to mind.

one thing that's been slightly bugging me with the last chapter was when De Singe gets minced in the horn. I love the fact that it happened, but I felt it could have really done with some more ripped clothes, few bones and maybe a hint of blood. I'm not one of those demanding the game to be "darker", but such a powerful scene could have packed a punch with some slight comedy gore instead of white confetti. The same goes for when Guybrush gets run through with LeChucks sword. Any hint of blood would be nice, and this doesn't necessarily mean making it an R rated game.
...BTW, i love gore \o/

After not playing this one for a few weeks, the announcement of Chapter 5 made me push through it over the last couple of nights. This is definitely my least favorite of the series so far, and I'm a pretty big Phoenix Wright fan. Some of the puzzles seemed...weird. It was also very short. It took me around 2 hours to beat. The others have taken me at least 3 hours (the first one took me 6). So yeah...I'm looking forward to 5 because of the end, but the ending better be REAL good.

I really hope that the explanation of the vodoo ladys doings are not what they seem to be. As it stands now, ToMI has just as Escape from Monkey Island did, tried to give a new meaning to the events in Monkey Island 1-2, and that doesnīt sit well with me. Up until the last part of chapter 4, ToMI has been a lighthearted matinee continuation of the series, without any ambition of being anything else. I mean, we havenīt even gotten an explanation of what the events where that led up to the intro in chapter 1.
And, boom, just like that, the ambition is suddenly turned to trying to explain the whole series. I think that shows a lack of respect for the source material and peoples perception of the story arch in Monkey Island 1-2.
I really hope that all is now what is right now, for chapter 4 is right now a huge dissapointment for me, storywise. Which is a shame, for up until now, ToMI was almost GOTY for me, since Telltale hade done everything else right (except for the overuse of the Floatsam Island jungle-puzzles).
