Rife with Harry Potter references

Okay, there were a number of times when I just kind of laughed, and thought, "oh, like in Harry Potter, when . . ." And then it started to seem very, very intentional. Here are some of the highlights.

1A crotchety old man with a mysteriously paralyzed cat. What was his name, Finch? And the cat was something ridiculous, Mrs. . . . something. Not the ToMI cat, the Harry Potter cat. Can't remember, too lazy to look it up. You get the idea.

2 The way LeChuck introduces the voodoo lady's journal. Something like, "I was being controlled by this journal! The journal of . . . the . . ." Tom Riddle!

3wandering around a dark place looking for a monster. Like the basilisk? A plant-like basilisk? Whose not poisonous and apparently munches on lions? Anyone?

4De Singe wearing a turban. I am just SO happy there wasn't a second face on his head when that hideous thing finally came off.

Anyone see any others?

I really don't see the similarities. You can do this with many things in media.

lol i can see where your coming from. the HP cat is called Mrs. Norris. yeah . de singe wearing that turban when i think about it seemd pretty pointless. maybe they where harry potter refrences XD

Nnnn . . . with the degree of specificity? I doubt it. Between the turban, petrified cat, and diary we're moving out of the realm of statistical coincidence. These are some very recognizable, unique Harry Potter references. It would be like finding a root beer, demon pirates, and a rubber chicken with a pulley in it in another game and trying to argue there was no Monkey Island connection.

Yeah, I got the cat-thing and the turban occurred to me, too. Missed the diary thing.

Geez I got 2/3 and I don't even like HP. Bad signs. :-(

Finding root beer, demon pirates, and a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle in another game WOULD be weird. Because they're major plot points in the original.
I fail to see how the paralysed cat and the turban are major plot points in Harry Potter. Even the diary... it wasn't exactly CONTROLLING. It just talked back.
Or maybe it's just because I think the HP series as a whole is a steaming pile of badly-written cliche and haven't read past the fourth book.

Those are really vague and you could make similar claims with any long series of books including the Chronicles of Narnia, Lemony Snicket, the LotR, etc. Those are all very typical icons.

They're pretty subtle, but now you say it.....

I'll put it down as a maybe for now, but good observations.

They're references to Asterix. The turban is a reference to Asterix and the Magic Carpet, the cat is obviously referring to the Egyptians with all their cat statues (not to mention the Sphinx) in Asterix and Cleopatra, and the diary is a reference to Getafix with his magic books.

2 and 3 are kind of a stretch. The Voodoo's diary was not controlling LeChuck, it just "explained" how the Lady was controlling him.

I don't believe it, but why did the Voodoo lady make Stan defend LeChuck?

It probably has something to do with the Secret of Monkey island.
