View Full Version : The End of Monkey Island?!?!?

I was chatting with some guys on a forum about the recent MI games and one of them mentioned an interesting tidbit. Supposedly there was another MI game in the works at Lucus Arts (before it gave up on them and became StarWArs Inc) called "The End of Monkey Island" or "Death of Monkey Island" and was a conclusion to the series, where guybrush learns the secret of monkey island and somehow manages to destroy the island, himself, and everyone else...
Does anyone here know anything about this?

Ah beh;sdjf;askdfj What?
That's actually a first I've heard of that. Somehow... I find that very hard to believe. So I'll be honest and say that that fun tidbit is probably a joke. But that's just me.

If that's true, I would so kill LucasArts. Slowly, and painfully. (evil stare here.)

I seriously doubt there's any truth whatsoever in that rumor.

I'd have to agree with Arodin, I don't think it's true. Monkey Island is too popular and too lucrative for Lucas Arts to get rid of. Besides, I'm fairly certain nobody wants to say to the police, "And then this...mob of gamers just...attacked us....it was horrible.......HORRIBLE!"

Could that be the Monkey Island 3 Gilbert and team were supposedly working on?
Or am I grossly misinformed?

Escape from Monkey Island = Near Death of Monkey Island

If lucas arts does something like that, that would equate to me as if they are pointing the middle finger to us in our faces.
I am so glad thats false!

Who were you chatting with? If it wasn't anyone that worked with LucasArts at some point and had no sources to back up their claim, there's no real reason to believe them. Either way if it WAS true, it must have been a really short-lived and unimportant project since nobody's apparently heard anything about it.

There was a MI5 in development for a few months, years back, but it wasn't titled, and was canned when LA judged the market as being unfit. Maybe your friend was reffering to the Return to monkey island (http://www.worldofmi.com/thegames/monkey5/index.php) april fools thing, or maybe the "unbreakable five game contract" that Guybrush has (as mentioned in escape).

none of you seemed to have paid very close attention... I said that this game was in development YEARS AGO --- before LA sropped everytihng they had to profit from starwars.... (NOT NOW) --- It might have been MI5, no clue. Supposedly his brother (jack or dave or robert... dont remember for sure) was one of the programmers... but this was a random blurb in the room and I never saw the guy before or sence, so I have no proof of wheather he was credable or not...

So pretty much, you're admitting it's a load of crap.
That's like the worst lie ever. A friends brother was a programmer.... Right...

^ There's no need to insult anyone or call names. We're not in kindergarten. He was just asking if anyone else had heard of this, out of curiosity. He specifically said "supposedly" which is clearly stating that there are no hard facts here.

Actually I think the idea is incredibly hilarious. Seriously, I laughed out loud at it. It fits Monkey Island. Don't be such elitists.

That actually sounds like what I hoped MI5 would be like before Tales. I was hoping for an epic finale to send off Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck to whatever their final fates may be... But Tales has made me want to see more stories told!

Thank you, you said everything I wanted to say but mroe concisely and more politely.
It was a rumor somone mentioned. Wheather it's true or not is irrelevant as ToMI has proved that the MI series is alive and well. I was simply curious if anyone else had heard this rumor. I was skeptical myself, but untill a week or two ago I'd never seriously evne looked at MI (only reason I did now was because of the "telltale everything pack" price being sliced to the bone on steam) so due to my "green" MI knoledge, I'm inclined to approach anything related as "this *could* be true, I dont know"

No matter if this is true or not, I think it would have been an interesting, yet truly destructive approach to finish the Monkey Island saga.
Anyway, I love these kind of threads, for they keep this forum alive a little until the next Monkey Island is on its way. ;)

Well, the truth is, there was a MI game in development after EFMI, and it's very possible it was meant to be the last. After all, the adventure genre was dieing, but alas the market turned sour too quickly.
Whether your friends brother was a programmer or not is a different matter (not entirely relevent). I had a friend who claimed his Dad worked for Rare. Turns out he was a postman...

Well, in that case (he case that LucasArts were going to end the series), I'm extremely glad that Telltale picked it up - not that I wasn't before though.

I think it's amazing Tales of Monkey Island even exists, personally.

Personally I think it's a good thing that the genre turned before the last MI game came out, otherwise Tales would never have been made.
a little research and I bet I know who the guy was insinuating... I wont say though because I'm not sure...

QFT! As I said above it may be a good think LA canned the MI series when they did!

Something like that would be pretty awesome, but of course LucasArts wouldn't have the balls and/or the financial ineptitude to actually even consider doing it, especially years ago. If the Monkey Island franchise is a financial asset NOW, it surely was years ago when the series was closer to its period of prominence.

QFT! As I said above it may be a good think LA canned the MI series when they did! True, and if the gap between EFMI and the cancelled MI5 had been that size, they would have ended up too similair. The characters would still be ugly, the controls would still feel stiff, and i doubt the puzzles would be the standard of tales.

Ron Gilbert had planned for a trilogy back in the day, and was going to reveal the secret of monkey island in the third game. Haven't heard anything about killing guybrush and destroying monkey island though.

That would have been quite good I guess, but the door to end the series has definitely closed now. It would have been much more valid to end it around MI4 time, but now we're moving on to completely different story arcs it changes the series from "a series that ends once the story's been told" to "a series that moves to a different story once the story's been told".

I hope MI ends right before I die. So I'll never have to live without, and can play every game.
