Now that Tales of Monkey Island has been completed, which is your favourite?

The Secret of Monkey Island, for nostalgic reasons mainly (and because Monkey Island itself looked best back then).

Tales, because that is the only one I have played. :p But seriously, i have read about previous mi games sometimes having illogical solutions and that it had a really hard dificulty which i wouldn't lilke.

My kudos to Telltale anyway, 'cause Tales quickly became my favorite post-Gilbert MI.

No, but in all seriousness, Curse and Tales were my equal favourites. Both were excellent adventure games!

I vacillate between Curse and Tales as my favorites. I voted "Curse" in this thread, but I know I voted "Tales" in the last one so it all comes down to how I'm feeling I guess...

Curse of Monkey Island all the way. I think they should definitely go back to 2D at some point. It just looked awesome and had such a special charm about it.

I think I have voted differently in all these polls. I recently played through all five of them, and - to my surprise, actually - it was The Secret of Monkey Island that I thought stood out as the best one. They're all great games, but SoMI is almost flawless - especially The Three Trials.
I think I picked Curse the last time because Escape didn't top it, and for that reason I regarded it as the best Monkey Island for many years. Now that I've played Tales, I'm not so sure anymore.
So, for the moment, Secret of Monkey Island. They're all brilliant games and I wouldn't want to try ranking the others, they all share second place. :)

Curse was my first Monkey Island, the game I loved for years before I learned that it was the third in a series (which explained so much regarding the opening and LeChuck's exposition chapter), and the adventure game that I've played more and know better than any other, so it's a sentimental favorite for me. I love them all for different reasons, though. Except Escape, maybe. Hard to think of anything about that game that I love instead of just tolerating...

I think I'm the same as this actually.
Though to be fair I haven't played Escape much yet. So far it's actually a lot better than I thought it'd be after all the bad reviews it got but I still think the other MI games are quite a lot better.
That said, I haven't got up to the Monkey Kombat yet that I've heard sooo much about.

The first two chapters are OK. They have some good parts. But once Guybrush gets to Monkey Island again, it goes downhill rapidly.

LeChuck's Revenge. I can play it over and over every day if I choose, and won't get tired of it. I absolutely adore it. I can play it faster than any other MI game too, as I learned in the Great MI Race.

I was going to say we all did, but looking back at it (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14319), I pulled off a faster time for Curse and IcedHope and OzzieMonkey finished Secret faster.
Also, I don't know if you saw (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=249024#post249024), but you got the "Most Absent" special award in the second race. We missed you!

Don't worry about Monkey Kombat, it's not that bad. The lava puzzle, however... (I'm the proud winner of the "Best Lava Puzzle Stuckness" award from the MI speedrun.)

I agree. The events on Monkey Island almost ruined the game for me, and I did consider giving it third place instead of shared second.

Having completed Tales, I must say, although it's a very good game, it can't really compare to the first 3, simply because the writing, funny and smart though it may be, is far off from the masterwork that was monkey island before the 4th chapter.
the 4th and 5th games are completely cut off from the atmosphere and character of monkey island. The jokes and the story go all over the place and there's no real concistency in the whole Tales series. It all seems a bit too much. voodoo sponges, pyrite parrots, feast of the senses, those and many more would not have a place in the original MI games...
Don't get me wrong, I love Tales, especially Leviathan was great, but maybe I'm an old fart missing the old days when the story and the humor were much more direct...

Its really quite interesting the split between people liking LeChuck's Revenge and Curse... personally Curse will always be my favourite as it introduced me to the series, saying that MI2 is not very far behind... it would be interesting to see a poll of when people started playing MI games and which is their favourite...

I meant that as a joke. I realise that it was too internal, sorry about that. As you and some others recall, I stayed up all night, and then some, to finish Escape. The lava maze just turned into a blur in my sleep-deprived brain. Monkey Kombat, however, never posed a problem even though that was after the lava ride.

I will probably get bashed for this, but I think the writing is what has evolved the most as the series has continued. In a way I agree with you, but I'm not sure I prefer the direct story and humour. I think the game design process has changed since the first two games. I believe they used to have much more room to make up dialogue and jokes as they went along and implemented the game, whereas the newer instalments of the series had to be more carefully planned.
I'm not saying one method is always superiour, but I do think that the writing in Tales and Escape is more elaborate, in a good way. Also, Tales probably has the best story and character development of the series. On the other hand, I prefer the puzzle design and atmosphere of the earlier games, although the latter could be due to nostalgia on my part.
Rats, it's really difficult to pick a favourite. I should never have voted for Secret. All the games have their pros and cons and all of them are worth playing for their good sides.

I can't decide tbh. It's a draw between MI2 and Tales. I love the direction the crew went with both of them. I would love it if Tales went back to a grittier setting, like the ones in MI2 for future episodes.
That's not to say that I don't love Curse and Secret. I just love MI2 and Tales for the theme the games have all around and the way they differ from the other games.
I played Escape a lot as a kid so playing it always takes me back, even though the game isn't all that good.

First and only Monkey Island I have played is ToMI, so for now it's my favorite.
But the game has gotten my interest up, so now I am going to get them all. So hopefully I might get more, or a new favorite. Only time will tell :p

Would you mind explaining that opinion? I don't mean that in a hostile way, I just wonder why you like the game best that other people seem to hate so much.

I think its jokes, music, backgrounds, cutscenes, story and characters are the best, especially the music. I also like how there are plenty of places to explore in each island. People usually have a problem with its engine (you control everything with the keyboard, there's no point & click), but since my first ever adventure game was Grim Fandango, I enjoy it.
Most fans will hate everything that tries a different presentation for a series. This is why people hate Escape and aren't voting for the Special Edition on this poll. I mean, IT'S THE EXACT SAME GAME but with new beautiful art and full voiced dialogues, there's even an option to return to classic edition. This also happened with the Star Wars movies, when director George Lucas changed some scenes to make them sound, look, fit the story better and/or fix continuity issues with the prequels and some fans still can't get over the changes.
Many people admit Tales is better than Escape ONLY BECAUSE it has point and click and Guybrush looks like his 2D Curse (which was the first MI game for most people) model.

fix continuity issues with the prequels
Lol... Couldn't he rather fix them in the prequels themselves, considering they came later?
Not sure what you're talking about though, adding Anakin in 6 and the gungan voice? Not sure I call that "fixing continuity issues".
Sounds like bad planning.

Lol... Couldn't he rather fix them in the prequels.
There's the emperor hologram thing, they changed the actor for the prequels, so he changed the Empire Strikes Back hologram to fix continuity issues. He made the films BETTER with the special re-releases, but some fans still want the original flawed scenes because OMG THEY'RE CLASSIC LOLOLOL I CAN'T STAND IMPROVEMENTS!

Huh, don't really see the "fixes". Still, the Emperor isn't played by the prequel emperor, no? Wouldn't the transfer thus be weird for the short timespawn?
Also not fond of "prequelling" VI Anakin.

They were made to fit the story better, since a past was added to it. They are improvements. You just can't accept it because as I said some fans won't let developers or whoever change their creations even if it's for better like MI Special Edition, and will vote for the lacking, outdated version on a poll.

Actually, he is. Ian McDiarmid played the emperor in Return of the Jedi when he was in his thirties (under heavy makeup obviously), so by the time the prequels were made, he was exactly the right age to play Palpatine once again.

Hassat is an ass hat. Also, just for the record: Escape from Monkey Island was brilliant. I have played all of the Monkey Island games (and then again) and Escape just does the trick for me. The amount of exploration, the lengthy adventure as a whole, every new character, every visitation from old characters and (do I dare say it?) I like how Guybrush looks--keeps up his pitiful excuse for a swashbuckling pirate idea. Just tickles me. Plus-- who doesn't dream of visiting Planet Threepwood?

I think that the new graphics in the SE are alright but a far cry from gorgeous. HD resolution is not the same as good art direction and on that front I feel that SE does a kind of bad job. It's a nice breath of fresh air and it's not a bad game by any measure. I just prefer to play the original The original backgrounds had a lot more personality in my eyes.
Also there is the more technical side; I can shove it in SCUMMVM and get a better fit to my screen and slap on some MIDI stuff and I feel it's a far better experience than the SE.
While I absolutely Dom's voice acting I just prefer to play it without voices. It leaves Guybrush as more of an empty vessel and allows me to interpret the character to a much larger degree.
Mind, in the games that always had voice acting I wouldn't play without but I sincerly think that the first two games loses something when you lock them to a sigle interpretation, in this case Dom's.
As for Star Wars, I would rather that George Lucas had just made sure that his new installments fit the established canon instead of making crass retcons later.
This however is all just my opinion and as such means nothing in the larger scheme. If you enjoy it in other ways then I have no issue with that.
