View Full Version : Sam & Max The Devil's Playhouse Preorder & Trailer! - The Penal Zone lands April 15
http://www.telltalegames.com/images/DevilsPlayhouse.jpg (http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/thedevilsplayhouse)
Whoa the game's announced! Starting a new thread here to talk about the trailer and whatever else, since the old one was full of leaks and holes.
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse
Trailer and stuff on the official site (http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/thedevilsplayhouse)
Here's the official spiel: "The new season Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse is the biggest, strangest and most epic to date. As the saga begins, an otherworldy power for controlling matter and space calls to the strongest and strangest who might wield it - intergalactic warlords and eldritch gods, under-dwellers and scholars of the arcane.
Gaming's greatest dog and rabbit sleuths Sam & Max seek the power's ancient secrets, as Max gains shape shifting, teleportation, mind reading and future vision abilities for battling these foes. The saga plays out in a surreal 5 month-long symphony of mayhem that gets deeper and more twisted with each episode."
So how are you guys doing?
ZOMG! That trailer was way better than I thought it would be!

You did very well to your credit to keep everything so tightly knitted up until the last few days. A lot of things are leaked so far ahead that when they are launched, the surprise has been spoilt.
Will pre-order The Devil's Playhouse as soon as I can.

And that art's totally my desktop now.
Be nice to have something a little more hi-res, but it scales nicely, still stunning.
From the trailer, it really looks like TTG has outdone themselves. I was a little worried about this season from some of the questions on the survey regarding features and advertising copy, but...So far it's looking great.

Er, I was so excited I preordered right away, but actually I want the deluxe Monkey Island loot and the tarot cards too... If I had ordered at the same time I'd get free shipping, right? Should I send you an email about that?
(Or does it work if I buy Season 1 & 2's soundtrack? I can't tell if the offer is only about the new merchandise or not).
You can disregard that. The free shipping worked with the soundtrack.

Please, Telltale, please tell us that this game will also be available on WiiWare or Xbox Live Arcade (preferably the latter because my Wii's running out of space) or something like that. Please, with sprinkles, oreos, bits of cookie dough, banana slices, and a cherry on top?

It's going to be on the PlayStation Network along with PC & Mac to start with. Other platforms are likely, but not on the first go-round. (Like the first 2 seasons of Sam & Max eventually found their way to XBLA and Wii disc).

Very pleased to see this coming to PS3/PSN. Great decision. Can't wait to see my favourite charming creatures in 1080p.
Are there any plans to provide a bonus for PS3 pre-orders? How will those pre-orders work exactly? I may end up double-dipping on this one since I would like to have the game on my MBP when on the go also. Telltale should allow us to purchase for a flat-price and get access to all versions.
BTW, I hope that all the retro posters get printed. I'm looking forward to 'They Stole Max's Brain!'
Obviously no plans exist yet in the real world, but if we have awesome posters, it's hard to resist printing them up and putting them in the store. We'll see...

Does this mean that future releases of other series (upcoming and existing) will make it to the PS3 as well? This, coupled with the Monkey Island remakes coming to PS3 made my day. Just need ToMI to come to PSN and the PS3/Mac owner in me will be all kinds of giddy.

I've been told that PlayStation Network preorders will be $5 off -- $29.95.
(The deal for PC pre-orders is that you get a free episode, access to the pre-order development forum, and are entered in the drawing for a free Penal Zone poster.)

The usual Telltale line applies here: We've got nothing announced and no formal plans right now, but our end goal is always to get all of our games on as many platforms as we can, so everyone can play them. So, keep watching the skies. Or the blog.

I can't wait until I get home from class so I can give you my money! And if I can't do that, I don't know how I'll be able to wait for a month to get the first episode. I watched the trailer last night because I suspected that it'd be out during school hours and I was worried I'd get ridiculously excited to see it and that my already poor ability to concentrate would totally evaporate so it was totally because I was concerned about my education but I don't think I should have bothered because if I could concentrate now then this sentence would have ended five conjunctions ago.
What I mean is, the game looks great. I'm really looking forward to playing it.

Yup. ( ... I feel like there's a term out there for people who know they have access to phenominal cosmic powers but end up doing things the old-fashioned way regardless. Like luddites, but not. And I'd feel dumb once I found out what that was, because then I'll feel like I should've known. But I digress).

If you look really closely, the logo screen jitters just a bit, as if you're really watching an old movie or rerun.
Now that level of detail is amazing.

I'm sorry, but I didn't see this at all. I was too distracted by the changing prop on the dresser in the background.
EDIT: Judging from the PS3 gameplay video (http://gdc.gamespot.com/video/6253462/), I guess my computer can handle it, but I'm still a little worried about how graphics heavy the game may be on my poor little system. Oh well, I'm sure there will be a graphic set up similar to Season 2 to help me out some.

You can turn off most of the fancy parts (shadows, glow and blur, etc) and get it close to a Season Two level of technical requirements, though even by default I think it's a twinge more demanding. And nicer looking.

So I'm guessing it would be safe to expect requirements/demand to be fairly similar to ToMI?
Have to agree, everything looks fantastic. In fact, I think it even surpasses what was accomplished with ToMI.

I'll wait to see how the opening cut scene animates on my computer before I mess with the settings. That's what I've been doing with the past titles, and it's helped me figure out where to put certain settings to help performance.
Although, I am expecting to turn off shadows, which does make me a little upset given how nice the lighting engine looks now. Oh well, like I said, we shall see when the game releases.

If by "obsolete" you mean AGP, there are a few ATI-based cards in the 3450/3650 and 4650/4670 series that have AGP connectors. I imagine they would handle the game perfectly well. You need to check if your power supply is strong enough to power them, though.

HEY. Wait a minute! Maybe I missed it, but what about a season collector's DVD? Why is it not mentioned in the preorder deal? Will there be one?
And why is the PSN-Version cheaper? The free episode for PC gamers is worthless for any longtime telltale supporter like me. I do own every single game in your catalogue, some even more than once (except Texas Hold'em, which I don't care about). Like with TMI, we get screwed. If there was at least the promise of a collectors DVD, then the 5USD more would be justified....

Dude, calm down. Read the FAQs. There is a Collector's DVD.
There's definitely a collector's dvd and quite a bit more if you preorder the PC/Mac version. The cheaperness of the PS3 preorder is because we really have no way to give PSN users a dvd or anything, but still wanted the preorder to be worth their while.

Btw cool that it's a cinema scene.
One thing, that i would really, REALLY, i mean REALLY love as a preorder feature would be a newspaper from Bosco's shop, just like in good old Zak McKracken days.
In it's simplest from this could be a PDF, although i for sure wouldn't mind getting this as a real newspaper afterwards as well. In a more advanced form it also could include hints or could be a part of the game itself, then the relevant parts obviously also should be available to the normal users in the game as well or they don't get the paper version.
The Zak McKracken newspaper was the best goodie i ever got in a game, even better than codewheels.

I think that's a lot more likely in a Season Three Case File(which may be integrated into a Deluxe Edition DVD like Tales if that goes well for them). The Season One Case File had an issue of the alien love triangle paper.

Honestly i'm not so much an Deluxe Edition dude and dunno how many people can take advantage of the free episode thing anymore, although i see the advantages for TTG, but i suspect quite some people already own all episodes maybe even more than once. It's a parody of the Phantom Zone?

Sam and Max trap Skun-ka'pe in the Penal Zone near the start of the game (it's a flash forward), so I guess that's its role in the story.

Chuck and I did this one a few days ago, so it's a slightly older build (mostly noticeable in the credits and a few other awesome things that Jake added).
This game looks so good! I love the environments. If you look at Sam & Max's street in Hit the Road and then look at it for The Devil's Playhouse it's amazing. The gritty feel of the city is now captured. I can't wait to play this.

Love the new lighting effects, I never usually notice lighting in games but it certainly helps to make the game look less cartoony and more like the comics. Cannot wait for new Sam and Max adventures!

Wow, that has got to be the greatest achievement in Sam & Max since... well that time in Season 2 when Max gets on fire.
Sorry to ask, but when did that happen? I can't remember anything like that.

Absolutely beautiful and funny as hell, and I guess there are lots of "did you try?" possibilities even in the short prologue.
And I have no idea Sam is so agile.

Are you SURE you didn't get an automated e-mail? I got mine when I usually do, within five minutes of actually placing the order. Maybe you skipped over it because it looked unremarkable? Were you checking the inbox of the account your Telltale username is registered to? Did you check junk and/or spam folders?

Okay, i failed and couldn't resist the giantbomb video interview anymore.
http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-ex-sam-max-the-devils-playhouse/17-2141/
After watching it, dunno, i'm not impressed by the graphics at all. At least in the video the colours looked pretty awful, the lighting wasn't this convincing as well. The shadows add nothing special to the atmosphere so far, beside of this they seemed pretty lowres and too hard. I kind of liked the blob shadows they used before. The perspectives also didn't add additional value to me. Quite the opposite was the case as i found them more confusing, so i'm still favouring point&click instead, no fan of these pseudo spectacular MTV angles.
I hope that this look is more due to the low quality of video and/or that the final tuning is still missing.
Does anyone know what the official technical enhancements are, for example did they increase the model complexity/texture resolution as well?
If technology and art come together, fine, but proper art still beats advanced technology if it't used wisely, moreover it runs on a wider range of machines.

As far a technical achievements? The game looks more cinematic, possible thanks to it coming after ToMI which had a very cinematic framing of just about everything.

To be fair, me neither. But I love the atmosphere somehow. I mean, I don't look at the actual "improvements", just to the result overall. I liked What I see, but nothing like "Whoa". Which I think is ok, because the WHOA part has to be of the complete product

The angles are a bit confusing to me too, but at least I get to see someparts of the street I didn't see before. It's like this is now a Film Scenery instead of a Play's one. But I'm still wonder how you can play at the second floor in Skunka pe's Ship without WASD
Does anyone know what the official technical enhancements are, for example did they increase the model complexity/texture resolution as well?
I don't know, but Max looks a lot more expressive compared to the First and Second Season.

Telltale still wants to do the best and prettiest game they can in commercial Machines instead of "Gamer" ones, if you didn't notice. It has to be a bit new though.

PSP is one of the few platforms our engine doesn't yet run on, so I wouldn't hold your breath. But hey I didn't expect we'd show up on Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, and Mac over the course of two years, so you never know.

Senior Software Engineers - Core Technology
Telltale is seeking highly motivated Senior Engineers to continue to develop the company's proprietary engine technology for PC, Mac, Wii, Xbox360 and PS3 with PSP and iPhone on the horizon.
That's definitely one of those "gee, it would be nice to have someone who knows how that sucker works", but by no means is it in any way an indication that we will be working on it.

03/17/2010, 04:29 pm
Even if PSP/iPhone is a long way off or never at all (not bothered by those platforms personally), it makes me wonder how development would be handled. If we assume Telltale would still be releasing all their games on the PC, more would be required on a port than what would for the 360 or PS3, especially since the PSP and iPhone can't handle those kind of graphics.
If they do make an iPhone app, I demand a Sam-ism Generator. You know, for those OMG! moments where words escape me.
Either that or the collection of "wise ol' Granny Ruth" sayings. Remember, kids, idle hands are the Devil's monkey bars!:D

Bought Sam and Max S3 first thing this morning, and got a free episode. Downloaded Monkey Island ep.1; VERY disappointed. I have been a Sam and Max fan since HTR; I hope they have not abandoned classic movement and dependable game characteristics for a more "realistic feel" like on Monkey Island. It is a talking dog and rabbity-thingy, why would you try to make the movement more "realistic"?
