View Full Version : What are your favourite Telltale games?

When I try to order the Deluxe edition of the Tales DVD, I get 35 dollars of shipping costs pasted on top of it. However, if I spend those 35 dollars on games instead, I pay no shipping. So my question to you is: which Telltale games (apart from Tales, of course) can you really recommend to me?

Well, the only other season I've played is Sam & Max Season 1 and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd recommend getting it because if you want to get into Sam & Max, it'd be a good place to start (as it is the beginning :p). Perhaps I'm not the best one to comment though, as I haven't played as many of Telltales games as others.

Well, I would probably pre-order Sam and Max:The Devil's Playhouse. I don't really think its gonna matter if you haven't played the first 2 seasons.

They actually say they made it so people don't have to play the previous two seasons.
Of course you might want to also play the previous ones at some point, but if you preorder you get some preorder related benefits.

I'd grab Sam and Max: Season One, with some reservations. For example, you'll have to realize it's their first episodic release. Episodes 1-3 do show growing pains. They're still great adventures, just obviously their first go at it. Really hits its stride in episodes 4-6 though, and really becomes something excellent.
If you want something more polished, though(for example, I'm pretty sure Season One doesn't support widescreen properly, it just stretches the image), you can get The Devil's Playhouse.
Devil's Playhouse has the benefits of being new, of coming with a free game from any other series, and it comes with a chance to win a Penal Zone poster. Penal Zone poster sucks. Don't order this. You don't want a chance to win an awesome poster. In fact, nobody but me and at most 9 other people should pre-order The Devil's Playhouse.
....seriously, though. Devil's Playhouse will come with a notebook that explains Sam and Max's past adventures, but that's really nothing compared to SEEING it. Like any series, you just will get more out of it if you've been there the whole time, no matter what the developers say about the matter.
You could also take the piecemeal approach, and buy the first episodes of Sam and Max, Strong Bad, and Wallace and Gromit, bringing your order total up and sampling all of them to maybe use the Season Upgrade feature later.
My honest suggestion is Season One of Sam and Max. It was one of my favorite games of its respective year, warts and all. It's funny, it has great puzzles, and the music is top-notch.

If you're wiling to spend more, you could preorder the Devil's Playhouse, which gives you a free episode. Then you'll be able to use that free episode for, say, episode 1 of Sam&Max 1, and upgrade the season for cheaper.
But that would have to be a different order so you'd pay shipping.

And if you've never played Sam & Max before, you can sample a whole episode for free -- Abe Lincoln Must Die! (episode 4 of Season 1) is 100% free to download and play.

Thanks for the tip! I downloaded it and played it for about two hours, but I don't really like it (except Max, he's hilarious). I'm thinking of getting the art portfolio and the button set to get it up to 50 dollars instead.

First time I played Sam and Max I wasn't crazy about it but I came back to it a little later and loved it.
Anyway, I would say try out all the demos, see if there's anything you like and if you can come up with anything just grab some merch instead.

Shame to hear you didn't like Abe Lincoln Must Die, apenpaap, though I can sort of understand it. Out of season one, it was probably my least favorite episode, my favorite being Reality 2.0. And season two just blew the first one out of the water (except perhaps Moai Better Blues, but even that contributed to making the end of the season awesome).

The flaw in this logic is that you seem to hate Tales as well. I haven't seen you say a single positive thing on these forums that wasn't related to Escape.

I don't see why someone can't like Tales but also have big issues with certain aspects of it.

True, but like I said, I haven't seen him say anything positive about it either. Everything he's said (that I've seen) has either been negative or about Escape. Admittedly, I haven't checked more than the first page of his post history to see if any of his other posts have any sort of praise for Tales, so maybe I just missed it.

Get Sam & Max Seasons 1, 2 AND 3.
That should keep you occupied till the ToMI DVD ships, and season 3 starts running.
Otherwise, it's a long wait till April ;).

I have no idea what you're talking about. In one, he puts it above Curse, which he loves(a good deal more than I give it). In the other, he sees one flaw with a chapter, but otherwise loves it, and is excited for the next game in the series.
And those are two examples I got by choosing a random page. I'm sure I could do an entire case study of this person's opinions. But that would be stupid.
I really don't know why I'm having this discussion. I don't see why someone who isn't all sunshine and rainbows with a song in their heart for all the little children is suddenly a problem person..

It's just... a little strange to see someone coming here when hating all telltale games, including Tales.
Sure, there are plenty of haters on some forums against some devs, but they usually get called out for that strange behavior, like here. Complains are fine, but if every post seen is a complaint, a person may get more attention, like is the case here.
You are pretty well known for being negative about CMI. All okay, you're here for ToMI and MI in general, right? (and maybe even the other games)
But he seems to be here despite hating ToMI even. It's not only me who notices, after all GuruGuru214 made the original observation in this thread.
If he loves (hell, even likes) ToMI, he gots an odd way of showing such.

Get one of the Sam and Max seasons. Either 1, 2 or preorder 3.
I almost enjoyed the 2nd season a bit MORE than Tales, but that is maybe because Telltale get better when they have some experience with the characters and the universe, so I can't wait for TMI2 :3

You're taking things so far out of context that you'd need a galactic map to find it again. Thinking that Wiiware severely limits the potential of a game doesn't mean you hate the product. Thinking that new characters have served their purpose and we should make room to meet even more new characters in the next game does not mean somebody hates them.
You are pretty well known for being negative about CMI.
And Escape, for many of the same reasons, but very few people seem to mind that.

I am not negative about CMI, I just like Escape and its GrimE better. Tales was very fun, I really liked it, I just feel like it had worse sound quality and low number of screens even when compared to the older games, probably because of the episodic release and WiiWare port. As for Morgan and Winslow, they're great, but they've done their job, I don't want them to return for Tales sequels, I'd rather have new characters! I don't remember complaning about the art, though

I think Morgan has a role to continue, considering the finale. I think she really needs to fill LeChuck's role for at least part of a game, given the after-credits scene. Winslow maybe, but he is the first crewman to not really abandon Guybrush. Seems like he's worthwhile to keep.
I also think the limitations were caused by Wiiware rather than an episodic release, since the environments in Tales and Homestar feel a lot more empty than those of Telltale's other, non-Wiiware games. Same thing with the music: Sam and Max has a fully instrumental jazz soundtrack(OK, a bit of techno/electronica is thrown in, but not as a replacement for the instruments). And the art in Wallace and Gromit really does feel like a claymation short, I was really amazed by how nice it looked.

03/18/2010, 12:41 pm
Fixed the thing about WiiWare in my post. :D
Sam and Max had fully instrumental soundtrack? OMG, I really liked Special Edition music because of that, I hope telltale consider doing that for Tales 2

Eh, that was about the posters thing.
Anywhere, here are the post I base my "accusations" on:
music
Tales music shouldn't even be referred to as a "soundtrack"
amount of screens
Who cares they were 2D, Tales just NEEDS more screens, 3D or not
Winslow, Morgan
Herman Toothrot, no Tales supporting characters returns please. I don't like Winslow and Morgan. At all
Up to you if I overreacted.

Well, the conversation was going on among me, ratherdash and guru, you came in all of a sudden saying I hate everything about Telltale AND Tales, which anyone can notice I do not, I only think I have the right to point flaws in video games, if you're happy with what you're getting, fine, that's your opinion, but I want better soundtrack, more screens and new characters for a possible next Tales game.

After all of this, my take on it isn't so much that you hate everything as that you're way more prone to talk about your dislikes about something than what you actually liked about it. Which isn't an entirely bad thing, I guess. I mean it's made for some pretty crazy debate, and that's been fun.

I have ToMI, Sam & Max Season 1 & 2 and SBCG4AP, and I love them all. The first episodes from any series are obviously not as good as the others, but again they're still satifying.
If you're going to consider getting Strong Bad, you should spend at least a few days looking over HomestarRunner.com first (especially watch all the Strong Bad e-mails.) It helps to understand the in-jokes.
One thing though: Where do you live to have to pay $35 for shipping ToMI???

There used to be a bug with bundles so people ordering the deluxe DVD ended up paying 35 dollars for shipping. Obviously most people decided to buy something else and have free shipping, which cost them the same but got them more stuff.

Subtract two episodes of Strong Bad and add one of Wallace and Gromit and you get my Telltale collection. I have yet to get to Strong Bad 103 or Wallace and Gromit 103, though.
Unfortunately, I bought Strong Bad 101 and 102 on WiiWare, so I'll be doing a season upgrade on the one PC episode I have of that...eventually... I just shelled out $70 to Telltale, so it's gonna be a while. A long while. But hey, I got a DVD, tarot cards, and Sam and Max season 3! None of which I'm going to see any of until next month!

If you're a Monkey Island fan then you're likely to enjoy Sam and Max. That seems to be a common thing here. Of course, people are different and not everyone is going to love both, but I definitely think it's worth a try.

All series have their highs and lows but somehow i wouldn't recommend only getting a single episode because there is something missing then. I think swearing about a bad epsiode is part of the game like beeing excited about a good one as well.
Hmm this makes me thinking of some stats...interesting...up to now, in almost 3.5 years, i approxiamtely spent $230 in 12 orders which means the avarage order is about $19 and every day since then, i have been spending $0.19 on TTG which again also could be a $6 per month fee.
