View Full Version : Things to Do At, Beyond and Below the Straight & Narrow: Penal Zone Did You Try List

Well, this was done for every chapter of ToMI, so why not Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse. I'm sure most of you have completed The Penal Zone, but there is probably much more in the game that you missed - more jokes, more lines of dialogue, more character actions and reactions that you failed to uncover throughout your first playthrough. However, we all have different minds and play the games differently to each other, so there's bound to be people out there who tried random combinations and wacky experiments and managed to find the things that you missed. Here are mine:
-Shoot at Skun-ka’pe while he’s standing, watching out of the front window of the ship
-Shoot at Skun-ka’pe when he’s getting sucked into the Penal Zone
-Read Sam’s thoughts twice
-Read Skun-ka’pe’s thoughts when he’s getting sucked into the Penal Zone
-Read the alien brain’s mind
-Use future vision on all possible options
-Look at textbooks twice
-Attempt to shoot Stinky
-Attempt to give the demon broth to Skun-ka’pe
-Use jumper cables with gaping hole
-Contemplate Puddin’head Lincoln twice
-Look at moleman construction worker twice
-Giving Momma Bosco back her power core
-Talk to Max while inside the moleman processing chamber
-Use your gun with the gorilla research assistant guarding the entrance to Bosco-Tech
-Use engagement ring with gorilla research assistant guarding the entrance to -Bosco-Tech
-Look at used pizza boxes twice
-Use cell phone with pigeon sitting on trash cans
-Use your gun with the research assistant gorilla guarding the pawshop
-Use the banana peel directly with the research assistant gorilla guarding the pawshop
-Use the banana peel with Max
-Use the banana peel with the manhole (not the manhole cover)
-Use the banana peel with the pizza boxes
-Try to enter the pawnshop a second time
-Talk to Sam while in the Penal Zone
-Attempt to use the Desoto after you escape the Penal Zone
-Use rift generator with Momma Bosco’s power supply
-Attempt to turn on rift generator before putting the homing device on Skun-ka’pe
-Shoot at Skun-ka’pe while he’s standing, watching out of the front window of the ship... again
-Shoot at Skun-ka’pe while he’s getting sucked into the Penal Zone... again
-Speak to Skun-ka’pe twice during the final scene
-Show Skun-ka’pe the paddle toy twice before turning up the heat on the boiler
There are probably much better ones out there than these, so if you found anything interesting, any bonuses throughout the episode, post them here so that we can all try them out on our next playthrough!

I was wondering if one of these would pop up. I only have one to add:
-Attempt to enter the moleman processing chamber before picking up the teleportation artifact

Teleporting to Stinky's Cell phone when Max is being strangled at Momma Bosco's while Sam is just stood outside is vaguely funny.
I guess the other teleport locations in this situation might also prove interesting.

This. Do this. I haven't finished the game so I was only looking for this one. Do. This. One. I laughed tears.

I don't know how exactly to trigger it, but apparently using the teleportation power excessively (I think I found it teleporting from where Stinky dropped her cell phone to Sybil's boxes on Straight St) results in a really trippy cutscene.

I noticed nobody said - use engagement ring with Max; I laughed tears when I did that, it's absolutely hilarious! Only seems to work in the street outside Momma Bosco's lab though.
Also, by using the jukebox in Stinky's diner you can hear the FRIENDLY DEMON SONG again (as well as all the other musical numbers from earlier episodes).

-Read Sam’s thoughts twice
Where?
If you mean the street... do it thrice!
(EDIT: Wait... nevermind... I meant use future vision thrice on Sam and the street!)
-Shoot at Skun-ka’pe while he’s standing, watching out of the front window of the ship... again
Pretty sure that's a bug (I reported it as bug at least).
I guess the other teleport locations in this situation might also prove interesting.
Sadly enough, all of them end the same way, I tried :(.
And yes, Max+engagement ring is the best... some more:
* Knock Max in the air while in the Penal Zone?
* Look around everywhere in Max vision to notice all the strange things going on, like the chicken in the Desote, or the flashing "Obey! Obey! Obey!"
* Use the iThing G4 several times, and looking at the item description?
* Use future vision on Sam in the spaceship after enabling the brain's power?
* Use future vision on the train-arrival-sign in the sewers?
* Call Stinky's mobile after attaining it?
* Try to leave the ship instead of teleporting out after attaining the Teleportation power?

In the prologue you can actually read Sam's thought 3 times -- twice on the lower deck, and once again on the upper deck.
Also, have you:
- (In the prologue) look at Harry Moleman again after getting the mind-reading cards? (x2)
- Shot Flint Paper?
- Tried giving Flint Paper the hard hat before seeing his future?
- Tried the the Demon Broth on Momma Bosco?
- Handed Harry the Vacation ticket before knowing about the lottery?
- Sneaked behind the diner's counter when Girl Stinky is present? (x2)
- Teleported Jerome (the gorilla that strangles Max) into the mole-processing chamber? (don't bother trying to beam him to the rooftop of Meesa Pizza: it does nothing special)

Another weird thing you could try:
Just after receiving the teleportation telephone, you can enter the Moleman processing chamber. By teleporting from there, you will actually skip the scary "first teleportation" sequence. However, you can catch it later, because as soon as you re-enter Skun-ka'pe spaceship, the Brain will bug you to try it immediately, which will finally trigger the flaming-Max-cutscene.
Essentially, I think you can teleport an infinite number of times before watching the "first teleport" scene.

There's a good max mode egg in one of the later environments which i don't think anyones found yet...
Is it in the Cultist Room? Where the Baseball is wedged in the rock? Cause I found that.
And can you tell me where the Easter Egg is? I'm tired of replaying that game...

In the cultist room there's a oven with a spoon preparing something, and a Pie which is hitting the Max's face in the room. But I can't think in something else...
You guys have the right room.

Did anyone try shooting the kitchen door in Stinky's?

Well... if you use Future Vision in the Toy Chest after power up the whole Building, you get a little part of the Ending of the Chapter.
So, yeah.

Yeah, you can't teleport out of there and Max says something like we are understimating Skun-ka'pe chances of get out of that trap.

Hmm...if you use FutureVision on Skun'ka'pe three times, his toys begin to hover above his head. Is that the one?
Actually, now that's happening even outside of max mode. Must just be a bug. :p

Star Wars reference, though Max was more accurate than Governer Tarkin

I'm sure this was already mentioned, but using the engagement ring with Max is hilarious.
You guys have the right room.
So... if you wait around in the cavern under the office long enough in Max mode, you can spot the ghost of Maximus wandering around in there. I don't think anyone's seen it, and now that 302's out the door and you've all played it without anyone catching it in 301, hey.

Well if we would have seen it, it would've spoiled 302. Still it's a cool glitch and I actually just saw it in my 5th playthrough.

...
It was definitely not a glitch, and I don't think it would spoil anything, but I guess each person sees things differently.

I think it would qualify more as a "goof."

I've waited around for a ridicilous long time in Max mode, and nothing.
So, Splash, what did you do to make it work? And how exactly does it "show" itself?

I tried both before Skunk showed up and after.
Both; Zilch.
So, more info would be nice Jake... :(

Considering how Max vision works, you probably have to go in and out of it several times, and also wait for a little bit each time. Why do I think it works that way? Because when you look at Sam several times in the same area, sometimes he has a duck water float, and other times he has a frying pan under him. Max vision changes each time you look through his eyes.

No-one?
Seeing the missing pharaoh issue in 303 I suspect he might not appear at all due to:
I think the missing pharaoh issue might be the game forcing to remove Max when turning into Max mode (because it would look odd to see Max running around during those), and since the Pharaoh IS Max' model it's probably internally flagged as such, and thus removed when switching to Max mode.
(On that account, did anyone EVER see Maximus in 301 in Max modus? We got hints where to find him, but so far no one has been able to see him IIRC. It might be the same issue preventing Maximus to appear there even with TTG intending to do so?)
Any confirmation/denying TTG? And if it's impossible to see Max/Maximus/Sammun-Mak in Max mode could this be fixed for the DVD?

Eh, I was wrong when I said I saw Maximus. It was a freakin' white pot n' pan... Me myself, I waited 10 minutes to see Maximus and saw nothing. So either it was a lie or you have to wait 20 or an hour for him.

And it's not like PA is a game that can really be replayed like the S&M episodes :( (for me at least)

I know I'm rather late to the game, but when you teleport yourself to Girl Stinky's cellphone the first time and end up on that random streetcorner, look in through the window. Also, when you are by Bosco Labs, click on the lamppost for a Simon and Garfunkel reference.
