General question about activation codes

With the games purchased here I've always got an activation code, but I never had to input them anywhere. The games always simply started when I bought them. So, what are those codes for? I'm somewhat puzzled...

Ah, ok. Thanks. I never saw that option though, guess it's because I'm always online when I play them.

Yeah, I stupidly cut my internet connection before launching S&M3, so there were 4 different options:
* Logging in with your account.
* Using the serial key
* "Manual Unlock" (whatever that is)
* Try the Demo instead
