Hi, all. This is Andy Hartzell, writer and lead designer for episode two of "The Devil's Playhouse." As you can see from my pitiful post history, I haven't properly acquired the forum habit yet. But I promise to visit regularly for at least the next month or two.

So let's see...what can I tell you about the upcoming installment? You know it's called "The Tomb of Sammun-Mak", and you've guessed that it involves the mysterious objects that were revealed in the final moments of "The Penal Zone". I can tell you that it's going to be a big episode and a twisty one, a tale that ranges widely in time and space. Like episode 1, this one throws a few new ingredients into the Telltale stew, but the flavor of this one is a bit different. Less oregano, more...cumin. And clove.

There, is that enigmatic enough? Please feel free to post any questions or speculations you may have, and I promise to respond promptly with cryptic non-answers.

Hi, Andy, nice meeting you.
I currently can't play episode 1 so I'll have to stay away from this thread right now.
But... Hi anyways!

Hi!

You guys, probably don't know when the 2nd episode is gonna be released, but if you do, just answer if my one of my speculated dates is correct. I think it will come out either in the 13th of May or the 20th.

We don't have an official release date yet...sorry! Some time in the next five weeks.

Ok, the first episode of the season and you give us a surprising cliffhanger. I swear, I'm getting S&M paranoia. You know that poll question about what we were doing gearing up for the premeire? Yeah, I'm pretty much doing all the answers.. TO THE EXTREME.
Anywho, can you try releasing the game on a weekend day? I like it better that way so I can get home from school and play right away.

Did you notice that funny-looking bloke in a couple of the scenes in the trailer? He was in the portrait for episode 2. So my guess he is the main villain in episode 2.

So back to your question - YES.

Hi Andy, great to hear from you! Just a couple of questions:

Penal Zone was heavily influenced by 70s sci-fi. Will episode 2 follow in the same style or is it influenced by another movie genre?

You say: 'a tale that ranges widely in time and space'. I hear: 'we're going to ancient Egypt'. Does this make me a fool?

If you had some weird 'accident' which caused you to turn into some sort of aquatic being which caused you to create your own fake body, what would you make your body out of?

When people look back on this season in a few months, what will be the reason they will choose the second episode as their favorite out of the lot? What makes this episode better than anything created by Telltale before or after?

What is the mystery of Scoggings?

BoneFreak
04/24/2010, 09:35 am
@tjibbe: If you pay attention in The Penal Zone, there's a billboard (I forget where) about scoggins. I think Scoggins might have something to do with S&M, but I'm not sure. I'm going to play again right now though and try to "analyze" that billboard.

Hello, Andy!

You say this episode is a "twisty one"... do you mean twisty like a mobius strip (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/MoebiusStrip.html) (one-sided and without end), twisty like the North Yungas Road (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yungas_Road) (notoriously dangerous, use at your own risk), or twisty like the Cygnus Loop Nebula (http://hubblesite.org/gallery/album/nebula/pr1995011a/) (ethereally beautiful and awe-inspiring)?

aHartzell
04/24/2010, 01:46 pm
Yarbskoo: None of the scenes in the trailer are lifted directly from episode 2. But those scenes that don't come from episode 1 are constructed with elements from episode 2 (along with maybe a few from episode 3).

MarkoH01: I wouldn't expect to see controls like the ability to turn off the film-grain effect, at least not in episode 2. The art director likes it, and he wants you to like it too. Personally I dig it...I think it adds texture (and is particularly appropriate for episode 2). But the fans have ultimate veto power. Organize a big enough protest against film grain and we will reconsider.

tbm1986: Episode two isn't built around a "main villain" in quite the same way as episode 1. But yes, you'll meet the "funny-looking bloke".

Gman 5852: You'll get a couple new Toys of Power to play with in episode 2. Not necessarily the same toys you got a taste of in Act 1 of "penal zone" (though you haven't seen the last of THOSE powers either...)

Highway and Mathman: Didn't you get your fill of that in season 2?

Tjibbbe:

A. Episode 2 marks a definite (temporary) departure from the 70's sci-fi vibe of Episode 1. It riffs on at least three other genres...points for guessing which ones.

B. I'd never call you a fool. Your conclusion is a logical one, but not necessarily correct.

C. Seeing as how I'm an aquatic being, I guess I'd go for a jellyfish-type body, one that's permeable and practically invisible and can swallow up unsuspecting passers-by.

D. I do predict that episode 2 will be some people's favorite...(and I guess inevitably it will be some people's least favorite). I've already indicated that it's a big episode, and it's definitely not the easiest to puzzle through...I would expect it to be most popular among serious gamers and fans of complicated nonlinear stories. At the same time, I think it's got some of the funniest voice acting in the series so far.

E. You mean "Scoggins".

puzzlebox: You describe mobius strip as if it's a bad thing.

Hey Andy, nice to meet you, and thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!

In the Penal Zone, many people felt that Future Vision gave away too much and made the various puzzles spoilerish and highly unchallenging. Most people would already know the solution to puzzles after looking at everything in an area with FV.
Is FV still going to be used in episode 2 and if so, will it be toned down?
Would the focus of FV be the comical aspect (jokes and funny cutscenes) or to keep it as a major tool for puzzle-solving?

Well...with the comment on film grain being particularly appropriate, I'm going to guess (or at least hope) that one of the genres is the old 40s/50s film noir/Hitchcock style.

After all, with the new dynamic shadows and all that, I'd imagine it'd be tempting to play with a genre that made such heavy use of light and shadow, but...we'll see.

1. Will the C.O.P.S. be used again like in the first episode?

2. Can you give us a hint to the main villain of episode 2?

3. Any chance Bosco, Sybil, Abe or some characters who didn't appear in Episode 1 will be showing in the new episode?

4. Will we find out whose Girl Stinky has been seeing (the S guy on the cell who isn't Sam or Skunk'ape)?

And finally...

Questions:

1-Will we get to know how the future vision ended up on S&M street and started the whole story?

2-When can we expect a toy of power that gives Max the ability to blow people minds with greatness?

Really? I thought it was obvious! We see in the trailer a giant cockroach with the nametag "Sal". In season 2, Sal was in the kitchen in Stinky's. Sal is an inhuman monster and his name starts with S, and Stinky is obviously lying when you ask if there was ever anyone in the kitchen. Therefore, Stinky is going out with a giant cockroach named Sal.

Highwayman speaks the truth. I suspected this much from episode 5 in finale of season 2 when Grandpa Stinky came back from hell and Sam ask about Sal and Girl Stinky said, "Sal? who Sal"? Up close and serious which meant a foreshadow event for season 3 and she did it again in this season. Her reason to keeping Sal a secret is that no in the right mind would keep a cockroach as a chef or a suuuuee chef (get it?????.......never mind) by the health board administration on food concern that is too unsanitary to eat or otherwise known as H.B.A.O.F.C.T.I.T.U.T.E.

Either that or could be Sam and Max arch nemesis, Sam Mack which I starting to speculate episode 2 may involve with him (if you notice how his name sound almost sound like of episode 2 title).

joseppey:

1. will there be time travel in this episode?

Not time travel, no. But we found a different way to mess with chronology...you won't quite be taking a straight line from beginning to end.

2. Will telaportation make an appearance in this episode or will it be gone like the future vision?

This episode features all-new toys.

3. How many new toys will there be?

Two or three, depending on how you count them.

JusSonic, mathman77 and Strong Max: I'm not going to answer all your questions, because I don't want to give too much away. You will be encountering some returning favorites in episode two...not necessarily the characters you referenced. I don't know when we'll have a trailer up.

Joop: I think our animators would love to have a guy squashed between buildings...it would save them a lot of work. But he'll have to be deferred to a later episode.

Bruno83: It's a good idea...I'll pass it along to the core tech team.

Strong Max: People are always making me cut things. That's the nature of a collaborative form like videogames. It's never just arbitrary, though...there are always reasons for cutting, most of them good ones. Sometimes there are technical limitations, sometimes it's a question of getting the game done by deadline. Occasionally an idea is just a step or two over the line, and I have to be reined in. This happens more often with a genteel franchise like "Wallace & Gromit" than a freewheeling franchise like "Sam & Max." But I'll make a confession: the original design for "The Tomb of Sammun-Mak" contained a puzzle that was a little too disgusting for Steve Purcell himself. I hated to lose it, but you can't argue with the Creator.

lombre: I'm having a really hard time imagining what a cross between Satan's and Harry Moleman's voice would sound like...

Hayden:

The Penal Zone saw Sam & Max driving around New York a lot searching for clues, and therefore featured far more street areas than actual indoor environments. Will episode 2 continue this trend or will it go back to more specific indoor areas? Or possibly a mixture?

Ok, I have a question. Will episode 2 start to branch out into completely new areas, not using straight and narrow at all? Eventually the same place and main 'base' if you like, can get a bit tiresome.

Geez, I shouldna opened my big mouth. I definitely don't want to say anything about the cut puzzle before the episode comes out...and by then everybody will have such baroque ideas about it that the truth will be a disappointment. We'll see.

Steve2911, OzzieMonkey and lombre:

Though episode two picks up immediately where episode 1 left off, it makes an immediate left turn into a very different place. You won't be seeing much of the street, or most of the characters from the first episode, and your tools for puzzling and moving around are different than they were in "Penal Zone". (Not that we're leaving all the episode 1 plotlines dangling for good...it'll all tie up nicely by episode 5.)

Joop:

Now I'm curious: what was the plot of the game in your dream? Do you remember?

Nojh: Carol has all the voice she needs to get her points across.

MarkoH01: Your agitation has been noted. I wish I could give you a release date, but we still don't have one. We DID get certified by Sony, which prompted many sighs of relief, so now all systems are clear for take-off.

I don't remember much of a plot. I do remember them being in Skunkape's ship again in the end. I remember ending the episode, being very satisfied, but then realising that I didn't get to see any new psychic powers.
I'll try to dream up the plot later on. ;)

Hey Andy! I've got a question that is not related to mobius strips at all.

What do you do around the time one of your episodes comes out? Are you ever nervous about the response it will get, or are you usually so confident in its awesomeness that you don't worry at all?

Do you celebrate? Do you obsessively check the reviews? Do you switch off all electronic devices, unplug your toaster and go spend a week in the wilderness? Do you sacrifice a goat, smear yourself in its blood, and dance naked under the light of the moon?

I for one am curious to know. :)

Is the goal of Telltale to keep the episode lengths at about the same level they are now ( i.e - 4-5 hours gameplay tops on average) or are you guys planning on widening each episode's scope?

I enjoy the games immensely, but I doubt anyone reading this wouldn't love a few extra gameplay hours per episode :)

I LOVE that the episodes are only 4-5 hours tops, on average. Due to obligations in my life (work, family, friends, etc), breaking down the game into episodic chunks actually makes it far easier for me to plan to play. But we all knew that.

More is better of course. I would actually prefer it if the season arcs increased in the number of episodes perhaps. Also the inclusion of mini-games that Strong Bad had in game, and Monkey Island had out of game, seems like a great way to add optional "hours of gameplay" for people who have more free time than me.

Just theorizing...

Sure, I read reviews as they come out, preen over the good ones and chafe over the bad ones. I want everybody to like the games I design. At the same time, though, by the time the game's out and getting reviewed I've moved on to a new project, and the game everyone's talking about is a distant memory.

Haven't tried goat blood...if you have good evidence that it works, let me know.

Shin Tav et al: I'd say Telltale is still trying to nail down the ideal episode size: long enough to be a satisfying play experience, but not so long that you start to forget it's just one chapter in the story. If some episodes have come out a bit longer than originally intended, that's just a function of our ambitions...we're always trying to top whatever we did the month before.

I would imagine so. Those must be a real migraine to create, though they are so much fun.

You have to remember that the title cards are different. The Season Two ones came up immediately before the intro and featured the same style and colors, and transitioned from the same music so it seemed like they were part of the intro itself. I guess that was the point. But to do a completely new intro every time would be...difficult. And not very economic.

I do like what you're going for with the film grain, especially with the way the intro and everything went. I do have a great distaste for the fact that it's on ALL THE TIME. It hardly seems related to the story if it's on ALL THE TIME. I mean, when you see the announcer sure, when you're in max's head and using his psychic powers sure, hell when you're driving the possessed desoto, or viewing a future vision, put the grain on, but I feel the effect loses it's meaning when it's ubiquitous. not to meantion that it SLOWS DOWN THE GAME on my computer VERY NOTICEABLY. which means I have to play the game at setting 1, which completely removes ALL EFFFECTS INCLUDING THE FILM GRAIN. lame. why can't we decide which shaders and such to turn on, or at least do me the favor of only turning on the film grain when something psychic is happening? I really wouldn't mind if my computer slowed down only at a couple parts in the game, also it just makes more sense that way, why would it always be there?

P.S. how long are your development cycles? do you work on multiple games at one time? how soon before the release date do you usually finish games?

... Um, this is exactly how it works on the PS3 version. The right analog stick lets you select an object in the direction you flick it towards, while tapping L1 or R1 will cycle through all selectable items visible on the screen. Sneakin in here to say: The credits sequence appears in all the eps, like a TV show. Maybe if we think a first act runs really long we will truncate the intro, but it hasn't happened yet. Episode titles are in a title card which shows up somewhere towards the end of the first act. (eg, In 301: Skunkape lands, says "Sorry about that building," then "The Penal Zone" title card comes in.)

I see that Sam no longer allows us to make him shoot at random objects whenever we like. Now, this is a feature that I sort of miss because, in past seasons, I found that being able to shoot everywhere all willy-nilly was a great stress-reliever for when you were frustratingly stuck (or if you needed to relieve the anger that the Soda Poppers always brought). So, is there any possibility that you will allow us to make Sam once again shoot almost anything at any time? As lead designer for the overall season, Chuck Jordan is primarily responsible for the new look, along with art director Pete Tsaykel, concept artist Ryan Jones and others. There was a lot of trial and error before we arrived at the final design, with a lot of people weighing in.

Like I said before, Episode 2 does have a vibe that's distinct from episode 1. The type of story we chose to tell helps to dictate the style. But that style still has to harmonize with the rest of the season. We're lucky to have a lot of really talented visual stylists in the company. I believe that Hell (After the $%! Poppers were killed), spit out it's employees and went back to being... Well, hell!

So my point is, when they were spat them all out; it completely changed their personalities. So now they're all evil villians bent on capturing The Devil's Toybox!

Hmmm....

I'm not quite sure where in the world this episode is going with its storytelling, but it sounds absolutely brilliant based on the little we know. :p

A quick question:

You said there wasn't a prominent use of future vision in this episode, but what about a "past vision" type toy? Something that lets you play as these potential past versions of Sam & Max and whatnot. Or is this too sane enough to fit the crazy "left-field" play style you've mentioned? :D

any estimated release time on episode 2?

First I thought, this whole 516vision and phone number thing would lead to 5/16, but then I realised it would be a sunday and they'd probably not be working.
Then again, I realised I'll have to work next sunday, so ...

Edit: Wait, now I just realized the impact of that suggestion. A couple million Newton impact.

The S.I. unit for impulse is N.s (Newton-seconds).

Impulse (I/N.s) = Force of incoming object (F/N) x Time incoming and target object touch (t/s)

So if an object suddenly fell, the force would be the weight, which is the product of mass in kg and acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m.s-2).

Yeah. But, considering we're talking about a rock with the face of a psychopatic physic lagomorph, probably the acceleration will be more and the weight too, just for comic relief.

I hope they announce a release date soon. If they carry on this way, they should drop the 'monthly' out of the terminology they give us and replace it with something more fitting.

Ok I'm going too far here. To my knowledge, the only time they have not succeeded in bringing the forthcoming episode during the month following the last episode is for TMI's final episode. Their track record suggests they'll pull something out of the bag soon.

I don't agree.
The humour may sometimes be a bit predictable, but the acting, particularly by John Lithgow, more than makes up for it.
Friends can't even come close to the uniqueness of Third Rock from the Sun.

Yeah, I figured it out. If you load a saved game where you have used future vision on everything, it will cause the playing cards and rhinoplasty to start floating inside the wall of the cave, instead of being in Skunkape's hand, which also causes the max flaming head thing to not work.

His name is actually Mack Salmon, so it actually doesnt sound that much like Sammun-Mak, which sounds more like Sam & Max. Also Mack Salmon doesn't start with an S.

I think the point is that Mack Salmon sounds like "Max, Sam and", i.e. a reversal of their name. So therefore "Sammun-Mak" which sounds like "Sam and Max" would also sound like Mack Salmon reversed. See?

The Highway
05/16/2010, 06:35 am

Yeah I wasn't trying to suggest there's a connection. It's just that because Mack Salmon was always meant to sound like "Max, Sam and" - it's just pure coincidence that people think Sammun Mak is a reference.
