View Full Version : Shawn of the Dead vs. Zombieland

For anyone who has seen both of these zombie comedies, which was better and why? I purposely did not include the legendary Evil Dead series, since its status as a series gives it an unfair advantage, and because I wanted to count the more recent movies.

Edit: I know I misspelled Shaun in the topic title, but I can't edit that so deal with it :)

I have not yet seen zombieland, but I have a friend of whom he and his mother have conflicting views. He like Zombieland better, and his mother says Shaun of the Dead did it first and better

I might not be quite the type of person whose opinion you're looking for, since I've seen most of Shaun of the Dead but never sat through it from start to finish, but I'll chime in anyway. I preferred Zombieland. Shaun of the Dead did have plenty of screwball elements in it, but when I think back on the general feeling I got from the movie, it still felt like it played the zombie horror movie thing too straight. The American humor in Zombieland just sits better with me.

That said, both are decent movies.

Well, the one vote is extremely informative, isn't it? :p

EDIT: Duh, someone else voted. For the record, the one vote was for "haven't seen them".

I'd have voted for Peter Jackson's Braindead (aka Dead Alive) if it were on the list. It's better / funnier than both those in the poll.

I love Shaun of the Dead. But then I like most of the stuff Simon Pegg is in, especially if Edgar Wright is involved too.

Shaun of the Dead strengths: Simon Pegg, more traditional zombies/gore, the Queen jukebox scene, the "plan revision" gag, extremely quotable.

Zombieland strengths: Bill Murray, the rules of survival, zombie clowns, just about every line Woody Harrelson said, Twinkies.

From the comedy perspective, Shaun of the Dead wins for me. But the Bill Murray scene makes Zombieland my favorite. I mean, you just cannot beat Bill Murray. It can't be done.

Comparing Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland is like comparing the United Kingdom and the United States.

They're both United, they both have their good points and bad points, and they're both full of zombies.

Haven't seen Zombieland (yet), and while I liked Shaun Of The Dead I very much concur with the above...

You should see it when you get the chance, if for no other reason than it has Emma Stone in it :)

I plan to, but the German Zombieland DVD is still 7 days away from released... :D

I felt like Shaun of the Dead was more clever and had better characters. Zombieland was very good too, but I'm going to go with Shaun.

I think they're both good in very different ways. I was really impressed when I saw Zombieland at how not similar it was to Shaun of the Dead. I expected it to feel the same but it felt very different. Surprising how much variety you can get out of the zombie comedy genre.

Dawn of the dead, day of the dead and 28 weeks later.
Shaun of the dead is okayish whilst zombieland just sucks.

Now i'm waiting for the vampire and alien threads. :O)

Check out a movie called Fido. Probably the most original zombie comedy around. :D

I heard about that, and I thought it was sick. But of course, most zombie comedies are.

haha, my favorite post in this thread so far.

I voted for Shaun of the Dead. Zombieland failed to live up to it's potential in a few places, but it was still very entertaining.

Just watched a preview on IMDB for Fido - it looks like it could be pretty funny. I'll probably check it out.

While I liked Zombieland a lot, I think Shaun of the Dead is infinitely better in just about every possible way.

I just had a talk with your superiors and they're going to give you an enormous raise. Sometime in the future.

No, but really, I have yet to finish Shaun of the Dead so I voted "both".

Shaun of the Dead is one of those movies I liked a lot at first but after seeing it a few times, started to not feel the same way and haven't brought myself to watch it again since.

Haven't seen Zombieland yet.

EVERYONE I've shown this movie to absoluely hated it. :(

I did meet one person that also liked it at an old job though.

Haven't seen either, although my dad's been pushing me to watch Zombieland.

For some reason, I'm really burned out on zombie movies. I think I've just seen way too many. :-)

Day of the Dead is still my fav.

In fact, I'm wearing the T-shirt right now, no joke. What're the odds?!

edit: apparently 1 out of 20 which is about how many shirts I own, which I still wear... ok thenn..

You're all wrong.

The greatest zombie movie is obviously Plan 9 From Outer Space.

I never really think of that as a zombie movie, but I guess you could technically define it as one.

I always think of it as more sci-fi-ish.

I can't stand Romero's originals. I know, I'm a blasphemer, I just think he's an awful director and the cast was dreadful.

Well, I can't stand horror movies if they're trying to be serious so things like Dawn/Day Of The Dead or 28 Days Later are right out.

I also liked Planet Terror and Army Of Darkness a lot, though. (Oh, and My Name Is Bruce, but that's just cheesy for the sake of it... ;))

Haha, I was kidding.

Shame on me, I can't believe I forgot about the Evil Dead series. I definitely think those are the best the genre has to offer. Shaun makes nods to the series and Zombieland definitely owes a lot to it as well.

I never really saw the attraction of shaun of the dead. It was okay, and a little funny, but that was about it. Maybe it was because i hadn't seen Dawn of the dead, but i just don't see why it's so popular!

I also liked [...] Army Of Darkness a lot, though.

I hate serious horror movies, but ohhh yes Army of Darkness! It's brilliant. We watched it so many times growing up, I'm pretty sure we started to wear holes in the VHS tape. In my family, "I said the words" has basically become shorthand for "Oops, I forgot to do that". :p

There's another movie like this coming out, but not really like this, if you get me.

It's called "I Spit on Your Rave"

# 5 Doghouse
# 4 Fido
# 3 Shaun of the Dead
# 2 Return of the Living Dead
# 1 Braindead

Others worthy of mention: Planet Terror. Bio Zombie. Night of the Creeps. The Re-Animator. Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn.

I'd put Lucio Fulci's ZOMBI 2 in there too, if I didn't know that it was only unintentionally a comedy.
