If you right click directly onto your desktop and then select 'view' in the dropdown menu, you will see an option of showing desktop items or not. This is obviously what Tredlow did in this case.

Before I got Windows 7, I had a clutter-free desktop on my Windows XP too. It's nothing unusual. Some people just don't like shortcut icons and use docks or fences, or just use the start menu.

I'm more happy with Windows 7 than i was with XP but still i have to clean up the desktop from time to time, same on OSX. I suspect for most people the desktop seems to be somekind of mid term clipboard.

Look, I... I think the girl is cute, ok? >:( Also there weren't that many high resolution desktop wallpaper choices in my files when I switched to this screen resolution and I got lazy.
I have to scroll over the taskbar to get it to show and also those two shortcut files are photos that my friend transfered over while we were on a trip to clear space on her camera for more photos. She told me to keep them somewhere where I'd remember I put them and not delete them and she hasn't come to transfer them to her own computer in days. SHEESH.

I really use it like a desk. Dump stuff on top of it thinking I'll get to them and deal with them, then every so often clean it off or stuff things into a folder (like the "reference pictures" folder is a week or two old, all the pictures for the plushes were starting to clutter the desk so I stuffed them all in a folder).

Never had icons go out of the screen, but I've had some stacking over each other and I couldn't remember what all was there.
Sometimes I have too many folders so I make a folder to put other folders in, too xD
Like right now, there is one called "Projects", it's got other folders in it.
Someday I should really clean things up better and organise them all and stuff. Once Ian told me I could erase the files I had backed up for him, so I deleted the "backup" folder, and only after that did I realise there was also the backup from my previous computer. Oops.

That's OK, because after you've fought for an ambiguous and unknown prize, you'd realize that you're not so different after all, that there are enough guys to share amongst everyone, and that more people(even and possibly especially more people with breasts!) means more love, and that's something the whole world needs right now.

I did mine by falling asleep with it on the bed, back when I had a twin sized bed with a down comforter. It fell off the bed and the LCD cracked. I sent it in for repairs and the screen was backordered, then it got lost in the mail. So Dell built a new one and sent it to us. Then the old one here got here the day before the new one.
Funnily enough, now it's the new one that has problems with the screen, although of a different sort.

I rarely use my laptop these days, but when I do use it at my bed, I have it on a TV tray off to the side and I use a wireless mouse and keyboard. The whole setup is safer and more convenient all around.

My old laptop got a cracked screen too. It was on the floor at the friend's place who has the smallest room you can imagine, basically it's just the bed, a chair and her computer.
I moved the chair, sat on hit, and crack! the laptop was under that.
Kept it with a big black round crack on it for maybe 2 years after that. It gradually got worse, more and more parts got black.
After about 2 years, I got an old monitor for a friend, the type that's huge and looks like a TV, before they made flat monitors. The laptop screen was completely black at that point, but I learned the exact way to switch to the other monitor without seeing what I was doing.
Which was handy.
Then when I moved continents (went back to France in 2007) I just left it behind and got a new one (which is the one I have now).
This one doesn't have a cracked screen, but it's missing some keys, and some of them are switched because I put them back in the wrong place. I'd buy a new keyboard but they don't make them in AZERTY here :(

Also, French-speaking people in Canada don't use an AZERTY keyboard but a Canadian QWERTY. I have one of those for my desktop, but part of me feels like it would be betraying my country to get one on my laptop :p

Most keyboards have keys that can be easily pried off and rearranged! For example, proponents of the Dvorak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard) keyboard layout will convert their QWERTY keyboards that way.

Remember is an understatement. And all that without really considering myself to still be much of a gamer... :D

I find it interesting that several people here refused to resize their screenshots to fit properly in a forum post.
Here's my laptop. I regularly clean the desktop of stuff since, when I download files, I usually save them to my desktop for easy access at first.
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3384/31378642.png
For anyone who cares:
- the "Movies" icon links to .mkv rips I'm making of my DVD movies (so I can watch movies on the go without the need for discs)
- the "Play DVD Movie" icon uses MPC to play DVDs, but tells it to open at Title 1 Chapter 1 (to hopefully bypass menus and trailers)
- I use IE and Firefox at the same time when I'm doing something (eg. watching streaming videos) that I don't want to lag my concurrent web browsing.
- yes, I do play RuneScape. My wife and I started playing it in college, and I know more than one rl friend who is much more serious (practically no-life) about it than we are, and I have 99 Runecrafting.
- and finally, this is XP, not Vista or 7. I used a skin (bricopack) called Vista Inspirat (http://www.crystalxp.net/galerie/en.id.130.htm) that merely replaced the system files that xp uses to display menus and icons, such that it looks like Vista/7 but is not and uses zero memory in doing so. I hate memory hogs like WindowBlinds.

I use it from my bed. I already have a mouse because the touchpad stopped working a while back, and use the mouse on the computer directly, because my whole work area is the computer itself. Unless I can fit an external keyboard over my existing keyboard without it hiding the screen from me or preventing me from moving my mouse freely, it's not going to be practical.
Most keyboards have keys that can be easily pried off and rearranged!
Yeah, that's what I was told. So I pried the all off to clean under my keyboard, and there are some I could never put back. It's been over a year now.
Also, some I put back in the wrong place (just "Inser/Pause" and "Imp écr/Syst" though so it's not much of a problem).
Some also regularly pop out and have to be put back into place, notably my N key.
I wish I hadn't believed people who told me they can be "easily pried off and put back into place", I'd still have a full working keyboard -_-'

desktop keyboards have easily replaceable keys. not sure about a laptop keyboard since it's custom made and integrated into the machine, as well as the keys are so thin.

Easily prying off keys is somewhat less common in laptop keyboards, in my experience. For example, my keyboard(while being an absolute pleasure to type on) does not have keys that can be taken off. When one got snapped off, I had to contact my computers' manufacturer and have them replace the whole mouse/keyboard "slot" in the computer(not sure how to describe it adequately or technically).

Meh, it works fine, just doesn't look good. The desktop one we bought especially to play Tales because the laptop has Linux so we couldn't run it. We upgraded it for the Devil's Playhouse because it couldn't play it, and now it can, so we really don't need a new one either.

Aw, that's too bad. It has worked great on all the desktop keyboards and laptop computers I've owned; unfortunately a sample size of ~8 may not be statistically significant... so the statement in my original post may have been overly optimistic. "Assume makes an ass of u and me" etc.
Fortunately I said "most keyboards", not "all"... so my statement has yet to be proven outright false :)

I think people should just be careful about things like "easy". I guess it's not rocket science, I removed all keys and could put back like 90% of them. But it's not as easy as I thought it would be from hearing about it, there is a room for error, and if you can't put a key back, well what do you do?
e; caught up in the thread- If you try to clean your keyboard, and it breaks, you can buy a new one. USB keyboards are like $10 or less, or if you don't want to be so distant from your laptop, Netbooks are pretty amazing and incredibly cheap.
And if you run into trouble, find the neighborhood high school nerdy kid and toss him a couple bucks to fix whatever is broken

It's five years old, the case is dented and cracking a bit, the spacebar keeps falling off, but on the whole it's in surprisingly good condition and just keeps chugging along. I'd like to get a new one, but really can't justify it when this one is still perfectly functional.

Posters like this (http://www.telltalegames.com/store/tomi-prints-purcell) are sort of rough, like card.

That's a shame, I would think people would avoid the beach more for a fear of drowning, which happens a lot more often than shark attacks, that are actually very minor because they don't really go for humans. In one area of the Florida Keys where my family has a house there's a beach that's a popular swimming spot, and not a few yards away, a popular feeding area for sharks. It's almost always filled with lots of sharks, and people just swimming about close by. There's never been an attack by the way, it's pretty funny.

There seem to be a lot of desktop strategies. A lot of people go for efficiency, putting something plain up and filling it with everything they need. Sometimes this had a lot of stuff, widgets, docks, and a wide set of icons, and some are so simple as to have only a few icons in one corner.
I see a lot of really plain desktops, and then I see the ones with pictures that the icons are actually arranged around. I couldn't do that. I always need to set up my desktop, and then the image had better fit into that.
I also don't get why someone would go so minimal, hiding all the icons away. What, is the desktop a picture frame? I like to have access to as much stuff as possible from my desktop, but it seems that a lot of people shun its very existence.

For me, yeah actually. Don't know why, but I just like it like that.

Mine's actually a step worse than arranging the icons around the image. I have them arranged into different groups. Audio files in the bottom right corner, for example. I do like to have access to a ton of things from the desktop, but at some point it becomes clutter, and my grouping method is an unfinished attempt to try and fix that a bit.

The only thing that would stop me going to the beach is jellyfish (and maybe nuclear armageddon). They frighten the bejeebers out of me (jellyfish, that is, although I guess nuclear armageddon would be pretty scary too).
I don't really like going to the beach because of the sand (it sticks to you and gets everywhere), the salt (it sticks to you and gets everywhere), the sun (I don't tan, I only burn, and I need to put cream on every hour or something) and the water (I used to get ear infections all the time).
But I liked kayaking, sailing and scuba-diving. I guess I like the sea part much more than the beach part.
Actually, I like pebble beaches a lot better. Although there have been time when I went to the sea and only made sand stuff. If was okay because since I wasn't going in the water, I didn't need to take of my T-shirt or my cap so the sun wasn't too bad.
Is the jellyfish thing a phobia, or due to them being poisonous, or both? When I was a kid (spoilers added because if you have a phobia that might be scary for you) I had jellyfish fights in Denmark. The water was just swarming with them, you were swimming in them more than in the water, and we had a snowball-like fight with them. The were probably unharmed because we had no strength at all but I still feel bad about that. Anyways, just like sharks don't usually attack you so people who are used to sharks aren't really scared of them attacking, I've had much more experience with harmless jellyfish so the poisonous ones are really an exception for me.
Same with snakes, incidentally.
But I'm terrified of spiders, and it doesn't matter if they can't possibly bite me (because they're too far, because they're the wrong species, because they're a drawing and don't actually exist), and any experience with them just makes it worse, not better. I guess some things just don't make much sense.
You can't really see it in my screenshots, mostly because it's Ubuntu, but I have a sorting method too for windows:
- Garbage bin in the bottom right corner
- links to places (various drives, my documents, specific folders I want to access fast) on the top, from the left corner
- links to games and/or applications on the left, from the top corner.
And I never have two rows of something. If it takes the whole left or the whole top, I delete some, or I guess I could have some stuff at the right or bottom although that's never been an issue.
Then the middle is a workbench. Stuff I'm working on but should be deleted soon, stuff people have just set me, stuff I haven't decided where to put yet... things like that.

Define "Trekkie."
I'm a big Trek fan (mostly everything that's not the TOS TV series,) but I wouldn't say that I'm obsessed.
I mean, I've seen every episode from TOS at least once, every movie and TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT episode possibly several times, and will watch it if it's on TV (except TOS) but I've never been to a convention, dressed up in any Trek costume, nor joined any local Trek fan club.

This is sorta random, but one weird thing that I just noticed is that PC users tend to keep most of their icons on the left side of the screen and Mac users keep most icons on the right. I have no idea why this is, especially because I am both a Mac and a PC user and I keep the icons on the right on my Mac and on the left on my PC. I guess it might just be due to factory settings or general accessibility or something, but I just find it a bit weird.
Maybe I'll switch all my icons around and see what happens.:D
