Ok. So there's a 10x10 grid. You and another player play a game.
The first player to play places a coin on any square on the grid, and then each player on his turn moves the coin either up, down, left, or right.
The first player to place the coin on a square that was already played, loses.
Are you first to play or second, and which technique will you use to win?
To be honest I don't know the answer to this one but my math teacher will give me a chocolate bar if I solve it! So gimme the answer!
Edit: Oh, and B) 11x11 grid

Quick question: Does the first player to play place the coin *and* make the first move, or is placing the coin his 'move' and the second player gets to make the first move?
doodinthemood

Not solved B yet, but here's A:
Split the whole grid up into 2x2 squares. Imagine 1 of these 2x2 squares.
If your opponent is the first to move into a square ("crossing off" one of the boxes) then you have another square to go to. If your tactic is then to stay within that square, then we are left with a 1x2 rectangle that's not crossed off - if your opponent goes in one square, you can always go to the other.
So, if your opponent is the first one in a 2x2 square, you move to another square in that 2x2
If your opponent crosses off the third square in a 2x2, you cross off the fourth.
This way, you always have a move, and so the opponent must lose, if you are the person who crosses off the second square. If the first player places and then moves, then this method means the first player wins, if the first player places, then second player moves, this method means the second player wins.
It works for all nxm where n and m are even.

Think I've solved B as well. The important thing to be familiar with is the idea that winning in this game is the same as avoiding loss.
OK for the 11x11 board. Imagine the 10x10 board cut away from it. We already know that it is impossible to lose on that bit of the board if we follow the rules for it set out in A. We are left with an L shape. Or a 1x11 rectangle and a 1x10 rectangle. Split the 1x10 rectangle into 5 1x2 domino shapes. Whenever he goes on one of the 1x2 squares, you go onto the other. You can never lose on that 1x10 rectangle.
For the 1x11 rectangle, do the same, and you're left with 1 square left over.
To win, be the first player and choose that square first.
To sum up, on mxn grids with even numbers, second player wins.
On mxn grids with odd numbers, first player wins, by chosing a corner square to start on.

Allright, I have one:
Sam goes into a clothing store with the intention of buying a new coat. However, he doesn't know his size, and there are, let's say 2,000, different coat sizes in the store. What is the minimum number of times Sam has to take a coat off before he finds one that fits him? All coats in the store have tags on them denoting the sizes. And, just so you know, this is the Sam I mean:
http://wire.ggl.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/250px-sam__max.png
Lagomorph not included. His brain is gone!
So, in summary:
Sam go to store
How many times must he take off coats to find his size?

He just needs to take off the coat he's wearing and look at the tag. His coat must have a tag on it, because it's in the store ;)
Either that or it's all about the math, which I have no intention to do right now.

Ok, same question with Max! (let's say that was sometime between Hit the Road and Season One, k? Just to make sure he has a brain.)
Ok, same question with Max!
Zero, he wouldn't want one.
Ok, a slightly more mathy attempt...
Assuming that the sizing system is uncomplicated, i.e. each size is strictly larger than the previous one and smaller than the next one, Max would be able to perform a binary search (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_search) of the 2000 sizes. He'd find the correct size in no more than ⌈log₂ 2000⌉ = 11 attempts. (He has to take a coat off no more than 10 times)

The question was the minimum amount of time, and I say it's zero. Max doesn't need to take his own coat off since he doesn't wear one, and the first one he tries might be the right one. Meaning he'd find a coat that fits without taking any coat off.

Avistew

It does make a difference if you interpret it to mean "the word "lie" appears once in this note" and "the word "lies" appears 19 times in this note". Which, to be fair, is the kind of "trick" that's common in riddles.

ANSWER TIME!
First, let me repeat the puzzle:
Can you figure out my riddle?
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/2143/safea.gif
(Post your findings and get one internet cookie)
The puzzle actually consists of two parts, though the first is apparently the most difficult since most of you didn't solve it :)
I'll do this the same way questions are answered in the Hints sections of the different games, with increasingly less vague hints, with the last one just being the answer. That way you can still solve it by yourself if you want :)
Part 1
What's depicted is not important, but the image file is.
The Wikipedia article on 'steganography' might give some hints. I'd link it here, but links show through spoiler tags.
There's something hidden inside the image file.
Searching the internet for 'hide data in image' or something similar will help you.
If you're still lost, just do this: If you have 7-zip installed, open the image with that. Otherwise, rename the file to 'safea.rar' and open it with your preferred archive opener. (I'm not entirely sure if it is a rar file, since I use 7-zip myself, which doesn't care about the extension. If '.rar' doesn't work, try '.zip'. Sorry) You should find a file inside. Halfway there!
Side info: The fact that there's a file hidden inside the image is the reason the image is low-quality. The hidden data is basically interference. That doesn't mean all low-quality images have a file hidden in them, but it can be an indication.
Part 2
Before you start this part, you should have everything you can get from the image (Namely, the famed "beep.mid" file). This part is probably easier than the previous one, but if you're still stuck, follow these hints:
What a strange sound. Though it does seem consistent...
Maybe a message is hidden in the beeps.
Now what signalling language consists of short and long beeps...?
Oh, I know! It's Morse code!
It's going rather fast though... There probably are plenty of ways to have it automatically translated. The next hint describes my way, if you're curious and/or still lost.
The way I solved it, which is most likely a pretty roundabout way of doing it, is like this: Audacity, a free audio editing application, can't handle MIDI files. Therefore, I needed to convert 'beep.mid' to something Audacity does understand. There are plenty of sites and programs that can convert it for you, Google helped me find one. I then opened the MP3 file the site created for me, in Audacity. The short and long beeps clearly show as peaks, with a clear distinction between short beeps and long beeps. I wrote the different beeps down, with dots for short and dashes for long beeps. I then found a 'Morse code to text' translating site and converted the Morse code to something readable.
That should lead you to the solution: "If you find this you rock".
I hope that helps people find the answer, and helps impatient people just get the answer :)
But if you find the answer on your own, you rock!
And for your patience with my silly puzzle, you all get internet cookies:
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/7720/chocolatechipcookiesm.jpg

Thanks for sharing, though, and sorry we didn't get it.
Ha ha!
I didn't think my puzzle (yes, now that I think about it, thats a better name for it) would cause so much trouble. :D
I'm his friend who came up with the puzzle.
If you want some more info, here is how I made it:
1st, I used free software to make the tone.
Morse Code (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/free-morse-code-software-send-receive-coded-radio-messages-computer/#more-45999)
Then, I hid the file in picture with help from this.
Hiding things in plain site (http://lifehacker.com/230915/geek-to-live--hide-data-in-files-with-easy-steganography-tools)
(Basically, if your on windows, you can make one really simple with this code "copy /B source.gif+source.zip target.gif" it just has to be a gif)
I felt hiding a text file would be too easy. I was going to add another layer, but I don't think that was needed now.
Thanks for playing all, and sorry for trouble :)

In this sentence, the first better can be used to describe a person who places bets for the speaker. The second better is showing dominance.
It means that the one who places bets is better than the speaker's wallet because the limitations on the wallet stop the speaker from winning tons of money, and we can assume that the speaker just won a bet because of the "better".

I hate that light switch puzzle; it is so awkward that it doesn't even make sense. Why would you have light switches for a room floors down/down a long hallway from the room? How do you know the switches are for that room, but not for which light bulbs? Why would you assume that the switches and bulbs are all on different circuits in a 1:1 to each other?
If you said someone left three hoses tangled up all over a large garden you'd have the same puzzle only it'd be slightly more sensible. You could even say they were plugged in around the corner of a house or something. It's kind of a stupid peeve, I realize that, I just don't like overly-complicated or bizarrely situated puzzles.

I once saw a (pretty lame) video game that made a liiittle more sense out of the situation, but at the cost of making it even more stupid.
Instead of three bulbs, there was a traffic light - red, yellow, and green.
You were the guy in the booth behind the traffic light that controlled it (lol), but you don't know which button controls which light.
Also you have butter and there's a dog outside that will kill you if you get out of the booth more than once.

The first time I told it on an English forum, people complained that it "didn't work in English". In French, numbers don't have plurals, therefore the first line is read "one one" but the second is read "two one" and so on, instead of "two ones". I was told the fact it didn't work the same in English prevented people from guessing the solution.
Since that was a complaint then, I hesitated posting it here.
If you say it works fine though, I'll trust you on that. It's hard to tell when you already know the solution.

I googled the hint, "147", and found that it was the top score in a kind of pool game. To get that score, you need to get the balls in the holes in a specific order, first a succession of all 15 red and black balls, alternating them, and then all the remaining colours.
I couldn't find anywhere stating if the remaining colours had to be in a specific order or not. I'm not even sure WHAT they are. But it looks like that's the answer.

Yeah, 147 is the highest score you can get in one break (basically, one go at the table) in snooker. Basic rules are that you must first pot a red, then a coloured ball and repeat that until all the reds (15 of them) have been potted. Then the coloured balls must be potted in order of points value (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink & black - points value 2 to 7 in that order).

Harald B
06/22/2010, 08:01 am
The biggest digit would still be 3. To get a 4, the previous line would have four of the same in a row, so if you split them in two's (because of the way it got generated) it's either like {.. ab bb bc ..} or {.. bb bb ..}. The first is impossible because it would be {.. [a+b]b bc ..} instead, the second because it would be {.. [2*b]b ..} instead.
(This assumes the "digits" don't use a decimal system per se and may have some minor issues. You can do a strict proof by using induction, but I'm not going to go to that length here.)
