View Full Version : Cake vs Pie

From an idea spawned here (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showpost.php?p=313320&postcount=7)

Basically, which do you prefer?

Giant Tope

Cakes and pie are different enough for me that I can't really contrast and compare the two. Mainly because pie encompasses so many different types of foodstuffs that I can't exactly narrow it down to one particular section of it.

The Cake is a lie! Hehe, I couldn't resist. :p

But seriously, I am not a real fan of pie, the berries inside it is sometimes to much (if it is a berry pie).
And all meat pies just taste dry to me.

But I have nothing bad to say about cake, I like all types of cake... Except cake with marcipan or coconut :p

I object to the absence of a "both" option. Both have their own merits, and I like both, depending on my mood.

Also, I love cheesecake, and am lucky to be quite skilled at making it.

I'm with you on the pie crust thing, but that's as far as it goes. For mine, I use graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and butter. I press it into my springform pan and bake that for 10 minutes and let it cool completely. Then I do two half batches of batter, one with plain cream cheese and one with a fruit flavored one, and I pour the fruit one on bottom. Then I bake that for about an hour in a water bath and then stick it in the fridge.

Also, I once had an idea to do a Neapolitan cheesecake. I'd done a chocolate swirl one and it was good, and I'd done a strawberry layer one and it was good. So I used chocolate graham crackers, chocolate batter on bottom, plain batter in the middle, and strawberry batter on top.

It was a disaster.

Chyron8472
05/27/2010, 12:29 pm
what are you talking about? Haven't you ever bought a cheesecake?

Even Merritt's, which is the best fricken bakery in Tulsa, uses some sort of crust for cheesecake (my guess is it's a graham cracker crust.)

Anyway, regular cake doesn't have a crust. cheesecake does. therefore I vote pie cuz cheesecake is awesome.

GuruGuru214
05/27/2010, 12:31 pm
I've never had any cheesecake that didn't use a graham cracker crust. I just don't consider that to inherently be a pie crust.

well...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mille-feuille

"Traditionally, a Mille-feuille is made up of three layers of puff pastry, alternating with two layers of cream pâtissière, but sometimes whipped cream, or jam. The top is usually glazed with icing or fondant in alternating white (icing) and brown (chocolate) strips, and combed."

It's a pastry, which falls into the same category as donuts or cinnamon rolls.

Avistew

Well I love pies, but I also like certain types of cakes. The ones without mounds of frosting all over them.

Apple pie is delicious, but really only the one my mom makes (I don't like any other kind). I also like blueberry pie and pecan pie. But then I like cheesecake and hazelnut cake, and any cake without the frosting of doom on it, so maybe I do like cake better, come to think of it.

Also, many crusts in the U.S. are too thick and just not tasty at all. You really have to make them at home. I love apple pie with a thin top crust that has caramelized sugar and vanilla underneath. Delicious!

Jenny

Avistew
05/29/2010, 08:45 pm
Raisin buns sounds like they would be a viennoiserie, not pastry.

You know, I realise language affects this issue too. For instance, in French, you have "tarte", which is pretty much always sweet and with fruit. You have "tourtière", which has crust on top and is savoury. And you have quiche, well, you probably know what that is.
When you say "pie", I only think "tarte". So of course I don't see things the same as if it included quiches and tourtières.
Although I still like cakes best.

Lena_P
05/29/2010, 08:51 pm
You know, now that I've finally looked up what "viennoiserie" actually is, I'm going with that. If I could, I'd have brioche or pain au chocolat at breakfast every day. Too bad the local bakeries seem to only make "croissants" that are either greasy as McDonald's french fries or so crisp and brittle that they're half crumbs by the time you get home.

Lena_P
05/29/2010, 09:06 pm
I'd say crumbles are a "baked good", that American catch-all term for muffins, cookies, cupcakes and other tasty things you can buy in coffee shops and restaurants but don't see as often at bakeries and pastry shops. Except of course that now pastry shops devoted entirely to cupcakes have started popping up even though ten years ago you hardly ever saw the things, but still, I feel my point stands.
