According to the Associated Press, Back to the Future IS GETTING THE EPISODIC TREATMENT AS WELL, COURTESY OF TELLTALE!

"'Jurassic Park' and 'Back to the Future' are two of our broadest and most beloved properties," said Bill Kispert, interactive vice president at Universal Studios. "We were very interested in bringing them into the interactive space, but they're not exactly the kind of properties that lend themselves to the stereotypical shoot-'em-up style of gameplay."

Connors said the games, which are in the early stages of development, would tell new stories extending the "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park" lore. He teased that the "Back to the Future" games may include a DeLorean ride back to the 1970s while the "Jurassic Park" games would be intense and add new backstories to the series' man-versus-dinosaur mythology.

"The games are going to exist within these worlds," said Connors. "I wouldn't call these games sequels per se but a new interpretation of their worlds for a new medium. For one generation, it's an introduction to these series. For another generation, it's a thing they can look back on and something they can share warmly with their family and friends."

Excuse me, I think I need a new pair of pants.

Back to the future? Do want. They could do a different time zone for each episode!

And They could still get Michael J fox to voice marty. Afterall, he's still acting.
Doc Brown on the other hand...

Oh no! An adventure game? Based on a MOVIE? SUXXXOR!!!

I'm having flashbacks from the nineties. "Indiana Jones? As a point and click game? THAT WILL SURELY SUCK!". ;)

Yeah, you're right. Last Crusade and Fate of Atlantis are two of the best adventure games I've ever played. Their adventure game classics.

Christopher Lloyd is still acting. He's looking pretty good as well, it seems he's barely aged since BttF. Hopefully Telltale get the original cast back.

YES!! I LOVE Back to the Future. Telltale has shown us that they can work with timetravel with "Chariot of the Dogs" so that wont be much of a problem. My only real question now is will BttF and Jurassic Park be presented story wise. Will they be what the studio wants or does Telltale get creative license to write their own stories ala: Tales of Monkey Island. I will say this though: Between S&M: The Devil's Playhouse, the Pilot Program and these new Universal projects I've got to say 2010 will be a HUGE year for Telltale games.

Edit: Like everyone else I'm hoping for, but not expecting Michael J Fox & Lloyd Bridges to do voiceovers. If they're not available, there was always the cartoon voices (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Future_the_Animated_Series)...

Absolutely over the moon about this, Telltale. You've been slowly moving up over the years, bringing adventure games back into the limelight, and now with Back to the Future and Jurrassic Park, it's gonna multiply tenfold, possibly for EACH project!

One thing does cross my mind; while people are clamouring for Christopher Lloyd and Michael J Fox - and I'd love to see both, but we'll have to see how it pans out - it's worth bearing in mind that there was a third crucial role. Well, fourth, after the Delorean: Biff. Tom Wilson has worked on games before, and he's already established as a voice artist on top of being an actor. I wonder if there's any chance of getting him involved too.

I have been waiting for a proper Back to the Future game for years. These are my favorite movies and the old games that were made simply shouldn't count as games at all. In saying that, I can't say I'm super excited about this news. The interview mentions that the movie doesn't make for a shoot em up video game experience and then goes on to mention going back to the 70's instead. Why can't the games follow the movie storyline? They are right, it isn't a shoot em up game at all, it's an adventure game. They apparently agree with this since they are discussing going back to the 70's. I'm not saying you can't throw extra things in, almost all video game adaptations do, but to completely ignore the story and write your own is a great injustice to the original storyline and what would be an easy to love game. It doesn't make sense anyway. You have a story that millions of people love and would love to re-live as Marty via videogame yet you would rather ignore it and start from scratch? A game based on the movie would be incredible fun. Can I make it to school on time with my skateboard, make it to the mall on time to do the experiment with Doc, outrun the Libyans, get away from the Peabodies after I crash into their barn and so on until I make my parents kiss with a rhythm mini game at the dance and then help doc get me to 88 mph and back in 1985? To make it longer you could even include the 1st 2 movies so that you could enjoy helping Griff get arrested instead of Marty Jr. in the future all the way to going back to the past and escaping from Biff with the Sports Almanac since I'm sure plenty of people would love to use a hoverboard. The stories intertwine anyway so you could meld the two together. Telltale, please reconsider making a movie based game and not your own based on the simple idea of time travel in a Delorean. If anyone else feels this way, please voice your opinions.

No, basically. If they were going to be games following the films, they'd be limited in the amount of creative license they'd be able to take with it. Half the problem with film-based games is that they try to stick too closely to the game and the result is hamstrung and boring.

Anyway, it's way more Telltale's style to do new stories with an established franchise. That's what they've done with everything else they've picked up, so why not this?

I don't understand why you'd want a game that follows the movie faithfully. You'd know the story, you'd know how to solve the puzzles, what would be the point of playing? It would be like re-making the movie, expect not at good.

By choosing a different story they'd at least be able to make us care about it. Plus the things you described are a bit gimmicky, to be honest. Mini-games dumped in here and there when the movies would have allowed for it, not an adventure story.

I'm personally not thrilled by the idea anyways. I liked the movies, and I thought they were self-sufficient and didn't need anything to be added to them. At this point, I seriously don't think I'll buy either this one or the Jurassic one. They feel to me like a way to get money from famous licenses so that they can afford to take more risks with stuff like the pilots (which I'm more likely to buy).

Of course we don't really know anything, maybe it will look interesting and I'll want to get it anyways. At this point though, any announcement that isn't an original IP just makes me sigh.

Gone are the days of people saying "I'd love to buy the next product from Telltale and help support their future endeavors because they're a great company!", eh?

Then again I don't expect anyone to buy something they just plain don't care about. I just find it amusing.

EDIT: Then again I don't expect anyone to buy something they just plain don't care about. I just find it amusing.

They're not going to need my support if they make mainstream stuff like that :p Probably going to get lots of new customers. However, I bought Puzzle Agent even though I'm not interested in it, because it's part of the Pilot project and I want to support that.

I don't know, there used to be all these insane "Telltale should make a "insert famous stuff" game" threads, and every time I thought "thank God telltale would never do that", and now there are the reality.
Plus it comes from a very downhill experience for me, where I've been less and less satisfied with telltale (as a company, not the people) as time goes by, so I'm less likely to trust them now than before.

I'll probably still make plushies.

Back to the Future is one of my absolute favourite movie series' of all time. Jurassic Park seems like a great idea too, though it's a little harder to understand how that one will work. This just seems perfect.

It'll be very interesting to see how they handle it, I know it was said it won't just be a retelling of the movie, but I assume it'll use the same characters but in a new situation. Perhaps like a TV series.

I agree wholeheartedly, I'd like a new story. I'd prefer the games to be set at a different time or location so that they don't clash with the continuity established in the movies, but I wouldn't mind it too much if Telltale changed the plot and established their own continuity.

I've seen Douglas Adams comment on the very same issue--he's the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which exists in numerous forms of media. Every time he wrote a new version of the story he changed it, because he didn't feel like writing the same story again and again... as a result, the radio dramatizations, TV-series, novels, and video game all have differences in their plots. (They all start out the same, then diverge.) In fact I found the comic book version boring because it seemed like just a straight adaption of the novels (the comics weren't written by Adams, the author probably didn't dare to change anything)

The only problem with getting the actors even if its possible, while yeah we should get all those 3 people. But again thinking more and more about paycheck, i somehow dont think Telltale can afford to bring Michael J. Fox. Christoper L. and Thomas F. Willson aboard.

Somehow i just dont picture Telltale games making millions and millions of dollars :P but maybe they are cheap i dont know ^^ but it would be beyond amazing if those 3 people was doing voices.

OH MY GOD. BEST NEWS EVER.

This is actually amazing. The Back To The Future trilogy is easily the best trilogy ever made, tied with Star Wars of course! Pleaaaaaaaaase don't mess this up and I will love Telltale forever.

Would be awesome if the characters from the films did the voice acting. I'm sure they'd be up for it!

I don't actually mind if the game follows the storyline of the films, sure it's not original but that's why the BTTF films are so amazing, the storyline is AWESOME.

Doc has created a time machine that's powered with plutonium. He got the plutonium from terrorists. He shows the machine to Marty, a teenager who is friends with him.
The terrorists arrive, they're after Doc, Marty jumps into the time machine (which is a car) to escape them, but accidentally is teleported 30 years earlier. He ends up preventing his parents from meeting and need to fix that as well as find a way to power the machine to go back to his own time, since plutonium isn't very easy to get.

That's the first movie. Then stuff that happened in the first movie influenced the future, and there is more traveling, including to the future, to an alternate present and to the far past (think cowboys). It's a pretty nice trilogy, I'd recommend watching it.

Doc has created a time machine that's powered with plutonium. He got the plutonium from terrorists. He shows the machine to Marty, a teenager who is friends with him.

This is the best DAY IN MY LIFE!. Seriously. Almost almost fell down of my chair :)
This is just as amazing back when Telltales first announced Sam & max for the first time, or Monkey Island :) maybe even little more, Back to the future just holds a speciel place in my heart.

Also, as Day of the Tentacle proved a long time ago, time travel-based puzzels are always the best!

That is exctly the reason i really cant wait for this, Dott showed how it can be done. I cant wait for more time travel with more depth than those in Sam & max. Time Travel is just AWESOME.

Christopher Lloyd, Tom Wilson, and Micheal J Fox have all done quite a bit of voice work, so none of them are totally outside of the range of possibilities, especially if NBC/Universal is funding these projects.

I hope there's some freedom of exploration in this game, it would be great to be able to really explore Hill Valley in different eras.

First of all, let me express my honest, deepest feelings:

I LOVE YOU, TELLTALE!!!

I was never that much of a fanboy, as I love to voice criticism loud and clear, but here I won't. You'll do fine, TTG! ;)

This is like a dream come true. I really needed a new one after Ubisoft killed another one of mine.

Biff. Tom Wilson has worked on games before, and he's already established as a voice artist on top of being an actor. I wonder if there's any chance of getting him involved too.

I really think Thomas F. Wilson would be the first to hop aboard. He KNOWS he can't escape his past. Just listen to him singing:

I've just sort of referenced that in my last post in the JP forum section. My guess is that most people on this site are more interested in BttF than JP which I think stems from the basic general, well I guess stereotype is sort of the word I'm looking for here, image of your typical adventure game player in that time travel is better than dinosaurs (though the two can combine nicely).

I think I got it and I'd say you're partially right, but my sentence was more about how people reacted so differently to these announcements than why they did so.
But I thought about the "why" too, and the first thing that came in my mind was about how the quality of the two trilogies were perceived by people in general, though there's of course a lot more than this behind it.

EDIT: Dominic Armato to voice Marty McFly plz.

If the real Marty isn't available, Dom would be great. He wouldn't be exactly like the films which would help distance them from the kinds of people who would complain about not being true to the franchise. Also, Dom's got a very boyish voice that I think helps make Guybrush likeable.

Can't wait for the first teaser screenshots to be released.

Calm down. We haven't heard anything about the genre or gameplay yet. There's no reason to assume it'll be anything other than a traditional Telltale-style adventure game.

It's not like they're going to make a JP FPS. They'll be adding more features to their tool to expand the cinematic experience. If that means occasionally shooting a tranquilizer dart or net at a dinosaur to move along the story and heighten tension, so be it.

I read that 'genre' bit as new genres of franchise, not new genres of game.

Well, there's also this quote from an NBC Universal representative that's been floating around:

In the official announcement materials, Bill Kispert, interactive vice president at Universal Studios, seems to suggest that these games won't be shoot-'em-ups. Whew. "Jurassic Park and Back to the Future are two of our broadest and most beloved properties," Kispert said in a statement. "We were very interested in bringing them into the interactive space, but they're not exactly the kind of properties that lend themselves to the stereotypical shoot-'em-up style of gameplay."

Besides, it was the genre's refusal to adapt that nearly killed it off in the first place in my opinion. Telltale are doing great things to keep it fresh... particularly for example with Sam and Max S3's approach to puzzles, so far, moving right away from the normal sort of use x with y inventory puzzles which have dominated the genre.

I'm sure this will continue that trend and if that means that occasionally I do something a little more action-y in the game because it best serves the story then I'm all for it. But as someone else pointed out, we know hardly -anything- yet, so let's not jump to conclusions, shall we?

The Penumbra games by Frictional are some of the best adventure games, and the scariest horror games, I've ever played in my life, and they involve (fairly) unkillable monsters chasing you and death. Mixing genres isn't a bad thing.

Oh come on, guys. Don't avoid a good thing just because it's not a pure adventure. I don't think TTG are going to abandon adventures any time soon. As made clear in the latest teaser, TTG's main focus seems to be on storytelling, which is the heart of the old LucasArts adventures. It will be good. Personally, I can't see BTTF as anything other than an action adventure (or adventure action, respectively, to be more precise). One thing I and probably everyone wants to do is drive the DeLorean and actually go Back To The Future.

I'm not sure what I expect for Jurassic Park, though.
