To be honest my brain doesn't notice stickied threads after a few days.

Much more attention if a thread rises and falls with activity, than it just being pinned.

Moar? :D

Let's just say there's more to come, Wolfy. But nothing this weekend... it's just_too_damn_hot to put the pencil in motion. I'm a winter guy! Also, I'd like to do something a little more spectacular next up, so it may take a while until there's "moar". :D

Finally! Some fan art from somebody else!

I noticed this in the Sam&Max forums. But of course, it must have a place here. I was tempted to draw Christopher Lloyd with a Sam hat, but I've done enough blasphemy in that direction. ;)

I still find 2010 very optimistic - and winter 2010 is even over! :D

Keep it up!

I've been nagging the mods to make this a sticky for ages, but... :D

I really like the chunkyness of your fingers and the facial expressions. As for technique, how do you color? Is there an actual grayscale stage (Martys figure) and a color layer above it?

I hope you'll post more... in the future. This particular piece is more than a year old, I figure! :D

Toona
07/27/2010, 08:33 am
I heard gray scale stage before, it is more handy for some artists. I just never use that. I have never been into coloring much actually, it comes out as I go, so I can't say I have a technique for that. I give the most importance to the style of the characters and the artwork as a whole. The rough sketch is the soul of the artwork and my favourite stage. The rest is easy.

I'm still trying to figure out how my bigger project might work out, and I'm calling out for help here.

Could someone with a BTTF DeLorean model (preferably one of the BTTF II SunStar models) please PM me? I'd need some photographs in a very defined perspective, possibly even lighting. Nothing fancy, just a reference. If some community member could actually do that, it'd be great.

Here is an artwork of perfection. Dan Schoening is a professional animator/comic book artist from Vancouver. He is working or worked for DC comics in some point. The style he has is amazing and is so inspirational. The ghostbusters pieces he made is crazy good. Check out the links.

The best style and BTTF art ever!

Wayy prefer TT to go more in the direction that Toona threw up as opposed to the one Skypes did.. Seems boring to be honest, looks like a still from an under-developed straight to video release imitation-disney film.

For what it is its okay and I don't mind cartoony, but I want it to look a little better than the crappy animations the Television show got..

EDIT: actually I just hope the game is nothing like the cartoon series, it reeked of stink.

Toona
08/04/2010, 01:17 pm
We all guess that the game will be 3D right? (I wish it was 2D but it won't happen) so I found some 3D artwork (appropriate for the forum as well - 3D artists are welcome too) on internet. Check these out:

would you like it to be realistic?
http://gcallahan.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/mcfly_1lo.jpg

or very graphic and stylistic?
http://www.samuelbeattie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/marty_635_02.jpg
http://www.samuelbeattie.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/mcfly_635.jpg

I think this is the right way if we are gonna talk about the style because traditional art and 3D are very different mediums. Since the game will be 3D...

I have to add one more thing. The one on the top which is realistic modeling is probably for a collectible BTTF toy or a statue or something. So that job requires a high level of modeling. A game modeling will never be that realistic. It was just an example of the 'realistic' style of the game. And I have no idea if these artworks are proffessional or amatuer stuff.

But I totally agree with you for one thing. I love the BTTF cartoon because it is BTTF. But the drawings. character designs and the quality is so crap... (which is acceptable because it is for TV.)

Please NO!!!
I don't like that 3D model AT ALL!!!

But I'd love a 3D rendition of the Dan Schoening drawing you posted, or the one posted by Spykes

EDIT: Sorry. I was thinking this thread was about what we'd like to see IN THE GAME. Now I realize it's about fanart in general. In that case, I still don't like that 3D model, but a little less vehemently...

Spykes
08/04/2010, 10:00 pm
Ya, I'm not a fan of the last 2, but the 1st one is amazing. Reminds me of Mass Effect quality character modeling. I love TTG, but I don't know if their game engine can produce that kind of result. It'd be incredible if they could do it however.

So, we're doing a thread-swap now to steal all thunder from the "graphics"-thread (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17272), existing from minute one of this forum? :D

The stylistic approach here... well, hasn't got style, to be precise. The iconic abstraction is so vehemently overdone that, apart from the loosely brown hair and clothes, Marty McFly is really not recognisable. That simply wasn't the aim of this model. The eyebrows are just somewhere in his face (further from the eyes --> more female look, and MJF's eyebrows practically touch his upper lids from most perspectives), the characteristic slant of his eyelids is not even hinted at, and the actor's rather small mouth... well, that barn door of a cookie hole that model's presenting...

This means, I find the comparison rather unfair (good thing it's not in the "graphics" thread! ;) ). On the one hand, there's a great, detailed model with a great emotional facial expression that could never be reproduced in the game; on the other, there's a cheap, 10-minute Marty model that does not take advantage of any of the possible caricature/ slight feature exaggeration techniques which could make a more abstracted figure loveable.

Yes, this was planned so_much_bigger. Poster-size, portraits done in pencil, almost lifesize, including a battered DeLorean and Lorraine right in front, wearing Marty's jacket.

Well, that was the dream. It didn't work out, I'm just not good enough. Here, in microscopic form, just a glimpse of my past endeavours, colored very quickly, because it's Monday evening and I am soooo tired. Have fun!

I like the subtle blues you worked in. The final scan would need some color adjustments in photoshop, though, it looks rather dark at the moment. ;)

As for portraiture, Christopher Lloyd actually IS the ideal subject. I find that the subtle asymetry in his face (watch the eyebrow positions!) brings out his likeness very much. With the height of your picture (about 30 cm, I guess?), you could also try bringing out his lower eyelid thickness by applying a highlight on the rim (always works if light is coming from above).

Yeah, how can ANYBODY like those models in the first place? They are the ugliest peices of so called "art", and are really a slap in the face to any true Bttf fan like myself and most others here I assume.

Why can't you trust TTG to use the awesome art they already have showed us conceptually? I think most of our fears involved TTG using something as deformed as that model you are so fond of.

Look at it this way, with a balloon head like that, how could he fit in the Delorean lol? Seriously, that thing makes me sick to look at, and is a blatant disgrace to the art direction that TTG is using, which I might add, looks a hell of a lot better than even the animated series and is THE way to go. ;)

Excuse me but I like those models - are you saying Im not a true BTF fan because of this? The fact is that these are totally new and different to every other thing I've seen - perfect for a new game. Sure its a bit of a gamble since everyone hates stuff they haven't seen before until they get used to it, but I think if anyone can pull it off the TT team can.

I believe there have been BTF games in the past and they came and went, nobody remembers them. I hope this one has a difference that makes it memorable and whether its from allowing new characters, going in a new story direction or threw new models, I don't care. I just want a successful and fun game

Vainamoinen
09/22/2010, 10:59 pm
Whoa, whoa, no flaming in the art thread! :D

It's an art critique - by definition, entirely subjective. Different people like different iconic abstractions. While some are justly drawn to the art of Manga, others puke at the sight of those big eyes. Same here: Yes, there seems to be a consensus here about the quality of those Marty pics (and I've written enough about it ;) ), but that's not necessarily an absolute, and obviously Delorean55 can answer this question: Yeah, how can ANYBODY like those models in the first place?

I don't and I can safely assume that TTG's in-game models will look nothing like that. But, yes, someone DOES like them, and that's really not a fault of character!

I just want a successful and fun game

Chances are really good that that's what you get! ;)

Uhm... Telltale is a unique company, and my favorite company is Telltale. Where I live noone even likes adventure games, unlike me. It should make it obvious that "staying the same as everyone else" isn't my motto.

But using unappealing character models (that doesn't give the franchise the justice it deserves) just for the heck of "staying the same as everyone else" isn't a good idea. Plus, you're talking as if Telltale made so many games with humans in them. CSI games have boring, detailed 3D models I don't like; Tales of Monkey Island uses VERY cartoony models, Bone and Sam & Max series have its own style of human models which are also pretty cartoony. Aside from CSI games that people rarely reminds of their existence, Telltale makes games that look cartoony and fantastic, which leads to originality. It doesn't mean just because they use models that are just a little more respectful to human body proportions (and taller, too) it doesn't mean they're doing what everyone else does.

They're not making a game from scratch, they're making a game based off movies.

It will have the actors' likeness, because people want that. They want to believe those are the same characters they loved in the movies.

The models you like so much, not only are painfully ugly, but don't even look like the characters.

So "epic meh".

More over, BTTF the game's chara design isn't like anything out there right now.

Im lost for words that in the same post you talk about everyone being different and liking different things, you also call those character models unappealing and not giving justice BTF deserves.

Honestly I dont want to flame, but it just feels like you didn't even read your own post properly before you hit it, as you can't talk about how people like different things and nothing is better or worse then the other, then speak badly about those models I actually like.

You have to remember that someone made those models and obviously likes them to. We don't know for sure what TT are going to use but its human nature to speak against something new and change. With time everybody would get used to them and I believe that a totally unique art style would make the game even more recognize - think about other games which have created a unique art style of their own...

But... we do. They've released concept artwork and featured it prominently in their advertising for the game. They aren't going to go in some direction that is completely the opposite of what they have shown. As a matter of fact, they've even shown (if only for a brief second) a in-game model of Marty.

That, over anything, is what's so puzzling about your stance. It's already been decided what the art/character direction is going to be, so I don't even really understand why this is such a hot topic.

Whoa, whoa!

This thread is for fanart, remember?

You're beginning to treat your own opinion like it's fact. You'll have to keep in mind, it's your opinion. Sure whoever made those modeled liked them but you're using those opinions to back up your own opinion as if you were trying to get others to like it too, which it looks like you are. But you have to understand that if people don't like it, they will stay that way unless you have some sort of weird hypnosis routine.

Besides, it's already been confirmed what these characters will look like, as Spykes stated. If you want a game with that model, take a class in programming and make your own.

Now let's get this thread back on track!

I don't have any related art.

Ahhhh, among the real artists... ;)

That came out really great. This is in acrylics also, isn't it? The hair texture is well done, I didn't know how to do this in my picture. Desaturated colors are chosen with care, and the transitions in the skin tones are really good (that points more to oil... ;) ).

I also like the composition. I'm always tempted to draw the head in full, but it doesn't often work out.

Thanks, its actually oils, you can see a higher res here: http://speedpickle.deviantart.com/#/d2zmdn1

Not really worked in oils too much before..maybe only 2 or 3 times, so trying to get the hang on it. Its messy messy stuff but good for moving colours around.

Vainamoinen
09/29/2010, 10:56 pm
Yes, that's what oils are good for: moving them around because they don't dry as ridiculously quick as acrylics. I've decided against them - after reading James Gurney's last book (http://www.amazon.de/Imaginative-Realism-Paint-Doesnt-Exist/dp/0740785508/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1285829695&sr=8-1), I really really really wanted to try oils, but they were just too expensive, and I wouldn't stand the smell all the time (living in a one-room apartement). Let's see where I get with acrylics, now that I discovered the acrylic binder. ;)

I've found oils to be ridiculously tricky. I worked with them for years and never really could get the hang of it.

Vainamoinen
10/04/2010, 05:50 am
Not a surprise - of course, Gurney's "Imaginative Realism" naturally speaks of oils as the best medium ever and shows incredible results with his more than 30 years of experience. Quite possibly, that's what you need...

...we'd love to see your results in the "General art thread" nonetheless, BlankCanvas!. ;)

I know there's a bajillion things wrong, but it was a quick drawing so I didn't think too much about them. XP

Funnily enough, I drew this a week ago and i haven't finished anything else since. Drawing Doc is hazardous to my art*health, it seems.

Took me two weeks. This was one of the compositional ideas for a planned acrylic BTTF "I wonder what happens" comic. Good thing I didn't really try, I probably would have finished that in 2015!

Just some acrylic experiments, again (just as my last ToMI endeavour) made with 16 year old Citadel acrylic colors (and some brand new Lukas acrylic white).

Thanks! Vaina is OK!

The colors are not as high-quality as I want them to be. I can't water them down as much as I want for a "proper" glaze, as this inescapably leaves an ugly pigment trail at the edges of the brush stroke. I compromised by making the glaze color at least close to the final color I'd want to achieve, then I only very slightly watered the paint down. But nonetheless, getting the skin tones at least acceptable took me two attempts, as the first one was wayyyy too yellow.

And that's not even Jennifer, is it? It looks like Lorraine.

In such a cartoony state, they look rather similar. Either Marty prefers girls who look like his mother, or Bob Gale prefers a certain type of woman. ;)

It's JENNIFER, of course! :D

Hmmmm.... fascinating! (You'll have to forgive me. I'm a bit of a nerd for art techniques, heh) I have to say I'm surprised it's acrylic, honestly speaking. It came off as watercolor-ish to me, hence me asking if it was watered down.

Still, for 15-odd year old acrylics as you called 'em, that's not bad. =]

I'm sorry, I was referring exclusively to the skin color technique. On the sleeves, pants and jacket, and of course Jennifer's dress, this is indeed massively watered-down acrylics. It shows. ;)

Yesss! Colors & lighting in this piece is so great. Did you take some inspiration from the sunset/orange tones as seen in the trailer?

Gesture is perfect, anatomy fits, Einstein is OK. And one of these days, you will probably give Doc a decent nasolabial fold, making him look way older. ;)

/edit: Soooooo.... what's the "December project"??

Meta Ray Mek
12/08/2010, 01:35 pm
Oh, the 'December Project' was/is me doing full-scene drawings based upon what people voted for on my DA page a couple months back. Mostly thing that -at the time- I've never considered drawing (Michael Bay*Transformers, Robocop hey man a friend put me up to it) or like but never really got around to doing so (Knights of the Old Republic, Final Fantasy 6). BttF was one of them, as were a couple other series, so now I've got stuff to work on for the rest of the month, hehe.

... Although I'm going to weep like a baby when I get around to the Michael Bay*Transformers. *sobs* too many spikey things!!!

Anyhow...

Kaldire: All 100% computer. Like I mentioned a few pages back, I do draw on paper some of the time, but I've had to switch to computer full stop out of necessity/preservation of my sanity since our scanner won't cooperate anymore. Without going into a long process list thing, I did a greyscale rendering of the shadows under the line art, did a flat color layer on top of it and then just went to town from there.

Vainia: Nasola... what? I'm a lunch lady, not an anatomy expert. D; Hehe. I'm still learning!

EDIT: Ohhhhh. I see what you mean. Hm. Well, seeing as I do still have the raw picture file, I can easily add it in there.

And yes! I did indeed draw color inspiration from the trailer. I eyeballed a few screenshots and just kinda went off on my own from there. I'm a glutton for warm, semi-saturated colors. >=

Here's a run at Marty sketches-- From right to left, are the earliest to the last one I did this morning. I look at the concept art and try to get a feel for the shape of the character and then keep drawing it over and over.

It's not close to the style this time, but I've drawn so little Marty compared to Doc, so it was a little slower to get used to what he looks like.

http://ufotofu.net/omgwtfbttf/martysketches_001.jpg

I do like the concept's style with the thin lines and color blending into it, and I may try something like that eventually.

Full-Size (and I do mean full-size) can be found right here (http://pics.livejournal.com/metaraymek/pic/000x3ssr) and on DA over here (http://fav.me/d34yquq).

Mind you, the full-size is about 50% of the original size I worked at. Also, drawing without contour lines/line art is a pain in the ass. I think it really shows in his face, but I spent maybe a good hour or two trying to get it to look passable. There's probably 1.21 jigowatts worth of errors, but I'm in such a rut I'm happy I got it to look this decent, at least.

Maybe one of these days I'll actually, yanno, draw Marty or something. Never was much of a Marty fan for one reason or another (I pretty much only watched the movies for Doc, hence why Parts 2 and 3 are my favorites) but maybe the game will change that.

Don't know if you guys saw this on Kotaku, but someone "transformed" the BTTF Game into a classic Lucas Art adventure game :

Pretty sure you should ask this somewhere else than a Art thread.

But no, sorry, won't be released on xbox.

In the Insiders' Forum, Alan has been announcing weekly contests, usually something like "Re-create the 'Doc Brown Committed' newspaper" or "Draw the 1885 Hill Valley map". I drew this ahead of time, just in case he announced a "Draw the cover of the 'Oh La La' magazine from 'Back to the Future 2" He didn't, so I'm posting it here.

(I'm pretty sure that this somehow kinda-sorta almost counts as Back to the Future Fan Art.)

Considering the quotability of the BttF movies, every thread in the BttF forum is a potential BttF quote thread.

Haven't drawn in a long time, so I lost my touch a bit... But I had to draw a christmas greeting to some friends, so I made this:

Any idea for a fan art which someone could create.
Have the scene of Marty with his foot in the DeLorean and looking at his watch like on the film poster. However instead of Marty it's Trunks from Dragon Ball Z with the DeLorean having a Capsule Corp logo on it and instead of a watch he's looking at a Dragon Radar.
Just something I've always wanted to see.

Also another one where it's Guybrush Threepwood out of the DeLorean looking a small sundial on his arm with the titles at the top "Back to Monkey Island" or something similar.

Here's the original which the shirt is based on cause sharkrobot is partnered with Halolz and once something goes up on Halolz and is very popular, they turn it into a witty shirt design:
http://www.halolz.com/2010/11/26/a-link-to-the-future/

The original is by a user named ChadVision: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&q=a+link+to+the+future#/d1gaf46
Maybe if you've got something video game related and its really funny, if you submit it to Halolz they might post it up on their site and it might get a shirt based on it.

Just an incredibly quick picture I threw together based upon the wallpaper/concept/teaser art for the 'First Citizen Brown' chapter:

Right over this way (it's pretty big) (http://www.telltalegames.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=364&pictureid=2323)

I'm also attempting to draw Marty now. It's not going very well. >=

Found this on DeviantArt OMG!!! Only complaint I have is that it should've had more of the coils visible and the flux capacitor should've been visible too. :p And should've been an Autobot. lol

I didn't mind the designs in the animated series, but good Lord Biff's design just creeps me out for some inexplicable reason.

Other than that, that's a nice drawing. Hehe.
